Virginia Commonwealth Falls Short Against UCLA

(6) UCLA 65
(11) VCU 64

NCAA Tournament First Round

Eric Maynor's shot fell just short at the buzzer and UCLA survived VCU's upset bid. UCLA was up ten at halftime, but VCU came roaring back in the second twenty minutes. The Bruins (26-8) placed five players in double figures, led by Josh Shipp's 16 points. UCLA will move on to play Villanova in the second round.

VCU (24-10) was led by Maynor with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Big man Larry Sanders picked up a double-double for the Rams with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Virginia Commonwealth has a pair of Kentucky natives on their bench. Former Kentucky Wildcats' player Allen Edwards and former Newport Central Catholic player John Brannen are both assistant coaches on the Rams' staff.
