Western Kentucky Hilltoppers Advance in NCAA Tournament

NCAA Tournament First Round

In the tournament's first major upset, Western Kentucky held on to defeat Illinois and advance to the tournament's second round. The 12th-seeded Hilltoppers (25-8) placed fiver players in double figures for the game. They were led by Steffphon Pettigrew with 17 points. Sergio Kerusch added a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. A.J. Slaughter chipped in 14 points and 4 assists for Western. The Hilltoppers were 9-19 from the three-point line.

Illinois (24-10) made a valiant comeback in the second half, but failed to get over the proverbial hump. The Illini were led by Trent Meacham with 24 points.

Former University of Kentucky player Alex Legion was 0-3 from the field and failed to score in limited minutes. Legion transferred to Illinois midway through his freshman season.

The Hilltoppers advance to take on Gonzaga (27-4) in the next round.
