Bilal Batley joins head coach John Calipari's staff as Assistant Director of Basketball Operations/Manager for the 2009-10 season. This was announced on several sites several weeks ago, but has not been officially announced until now.
Batley was the Assistant Director of Basketball Operations/Manager at Memphis for the 2008-09 season.
A 2007 University of Oklahoma graduate, Batley came to Memphis after a year as a graduate manager at Indiana University. During his one season in Bloomington, Batley organized the program's recruiting information and mentored student-athletes. He took graduate courses in Indiana's sport management program.
The Hoosiers had an outstanding year in Batley's one season. Indiana posted a 25-8 record, finished third in the Big Ten and earned an NCAA Tournament berth.
Prior to Indiana, the Houston, Texas, native served as a student manager at Oklahoma for two seasons from 2004-06. In his stint with the Sooner program, Batley assisted with practice preparations and pre-game setup and organized recruiting mailouts.
In his two seasons in Norman, the Sooners had a combined mark of 45-17 (25-8 in 2004-05; 20-9 in 2005-06) and posted double-digit league wins both years (12-4 in 2004-05; 11-5 in 2005-06). Oklahoma earned NCAA Tournament bids both seasons.
Batley served as an undergraduate assistant coach at Navarro College in Corsican, Texas, from 2001-04. In addition to his coaching duties, he managed study hall for the players and helped arrange promotional events for the team.
Since 2001, Batley has worked as an assistant coach/personal assistant at the John Lucas Pre-Draft Camp in Houston.
