John Calipari and China: Coming to America?

Do you remember Coming to America, the 1988 comedy starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall?

I was told today that Kentucky head coach John Calipari is preparing to play his own version of coming to America. Calipari is apparently working to bring at least one and possibly two Chinese basketball coaches back to America to serve as honorary assistants on the UK staff.

The source I talked to did not specify if this means that Calipari is literally bringing the assistants home with him on this particular trip or if he is working out the specifics so that they can be flown in as the season approaches. Either way, it looks like Calipari is going to hold true to his word from several months ago when he told us that his plans were to include a Chinese assistant or two for the season.

In my opinion, this is just another innovative idea that Calipari is using to make Kentucky basketball larger than life.

UPDATE: I spoke with Dan Wolken of the Memphis Commercial Appeal this morning and he tells me that Calipari actually had a Chinese observer on the sidelines during the last two seasons at Memphis. I did not know that that was the case and just thought I would pass the information along for others.

Actually this will be the THIRD Chinese coach that Cal has had over...each season he has sponsored a different coach.
This coach really doesn't add much input...they generally are there to observe strategies and such to help revitalize Chinese basketball.
Memphis had a large Asian student population, and it appears that Cal wants to continue that at UK.
In other words, "everything old is new again" lol.
