Kent Sterling of ESPN1070 the bore in Indianapolis has delivered another opinionated piece, which is really nothing more than a plea for attention, that deserves a discussion. I'm going to take a look at a few excerpts from the article and then offer my opinions.
The University of Kentucky, yet to be accused of any wrongdoing in putting together its best recruiting class in a decade, is about to round the corner on the weak portion of its schedule and enter an area where only men dare to wander.
After UNC Asheville tonight, the Wildcats host North Carolina Saturday, and then travel to New York to play UConn. After that, it's time for the Indiana Hoosiers to awaken from their two-year slumber to reassert themselves into the national conversation.
OK, I will agree 100% that Kentucky is entering a tougher portion of the schedule, beginning Saturday with North Carolina. There is no argueing that point (UNC + UCONN > Sam Houston State + Rider). The part I love about this first portion of the article is that UK landed its best recruiting class in a decade so there just has to be something illegal going on behind the scenes. They are just "yet to be accused."
Let's just agree that everything that happened since the first week of April, 2002, was a bad dream, and now we get to wake up for a big win against the supposed renegade program from Lexington, Kentucky.
Indiana had every opportunity to hire John Calipari, and refused to get serious because of the baggage he brings to every program he touches. Two Final Fours coached. Two Final Fours vacated. Enough said.
Indiana has not looked great so far, but for the love of God, let's not let these one-and-done kids waltz into Assembly Hall and give us a beating. Indiana needs to play with fire and represent the program with passion and excellence. I'm willing to wait for IU Basketball to be rebuilt the right way, but if there has ever been a day to rally and invest in the result of a game it's this one.
This is my favorite section of the piece. First, Kentucky is a "renegade program from Lexington." Kelvin Sampson on line 1?
Indiana had every opportunity to hire John Calipari. What? I hope this is a misprint, but I have a feeling the author is being serious. I am not buying at any price the argument that Indiana had every opportunity to hire John Calipari.
Finally, something I agree with - Indiana has looked like crap so far. I hate to bring bad news, but Indiana could play with an inferno and they'll still lose by double-digits.
UK should lose badly to UNC and UConn. Let's hope that the ball goes in the hole early and often on December 12, and sends them home at 9-3.
If you are a student, have season tickets, and need money, sell your tickets to a different game. There should be zero blue in Assembly Hall. Be true to your Hoosiers. Go to that game and make the Hall rock.
This is as simple as Good vs. Evil. Send the evil horde back across the river with a loss.

"Kent! Kent! Wake up...you're dreaming again."
If Tom Crean stumbles upon this article, he's likely going to ask himself, "who the hell is this Kent Sterling guy that continues to embarrass Indiana basketball?"

No calipari no super recruiting class, in other words moron your recruits were Not going to uk. You bought this class, it's not like uk won a recruiting war
Continue to line up haters...The University of KY will once again establish themselves at the TOP of college basketball and stay there AD NAUSEUM. It is our pleasure to have you and your once storied program fall in line with the rest of the competition who believe that since we have the BEST team of players, having the BEST time while playing for the BEST coach in college bball something must be wrong with the world.
The only thing wrong with any of this is that we have to call the IU game a rivalry (highly competitive game). Coach Crean deserves a better fanbase and team (he wanted coach UK) but he understands sometimes you have to dance with the fat chick before you can move up to the model.
Hopefully he'll be able to move to a major D1 after paying his dues as a Hoosier and won't have to resort to the illegal practices that were the only way to get talent to Blue-mington (correct spelling after UK owns you this year).
you'll win at a COST.
They told us that at Memphis.
We defended the scum for 9 years....so we know him better than you.
Just about everything out of his mouth is either a lie or half truth.
The ONLY reason he is at Kentucky....was the fact that the NCAA was about to investigate Memphis.
While he was 'soul-searching' as to whether he would take the UK job or not...as he told the cameras...he was calling his Memphis recruiting class and telling them to follow him to UK.
One of those coaches doing the calling is now our head coach...and he admitted this.
Your coach is scum...and he only knows to cheat to win.
Proof?
The NCAA has just made two rules changes....aimed at Calipari recruiting.
No escape clauses in the Letters of intent anymore.
Can't hire friends or family of recruits in certain postions to ensure a recruit goes to your school.
By the way...talking about the BEST....you guys are still trying to fill your 2010 class....and lil ole Memphis is already got a BIG head start on its 2011 and 2012 classes (you already know about our 2010 class I assume)
ok where is my comment?
Gene,
I don't begrudge you that Memphis has a great 2010 class (right now) or a great coach (right now). I don't take issue with your malice and vitriolic voice because Coach Cal left you (not really you, but your team) and brought the top 2009 class with him. What I don't understand is the animus that you have with the decision that was made.
Calipari is making MORE MONEY at the WINNINGEST school in the country. It's KENTUCKY (Memphis isn't even mentioned in the top 20 programs) and being the BEST is what's expected.
The NCAA didn't make rules because of Calipari either. He's a FANTASTIC coach but not that good. The LOI rule has been debated for years, especially when the coach is fired/leaves/takes a new job and there is no rule against hiring essential staff (coaches/administration) that is related to or friends with players/recruits - this has been and will continue be an accepted practice.
So 'Cool your jets' and root your own team on to victory, then maybe one day you won't be a STEPPING STONE but actually will be where someone wants to end their career.
Gene? Glenn, don't worry it. Uk WILL find out what we KNOW soon enough when they start playing a real basketball schedule and start losing games. I'm really anxious to see Cousins blow a gasket resulting from constant verbal assaults from x. We've experienced a number of head cases over the years with Cal and player symptoms are beginning to show. Tiger fans know where this is headed, let uk fans enjoy their little fantasy land for now.
UK did not outbid Memphis for Cal's services. Be clear on that.
Fred Smith of Fed Ex offered him a cushy VP job at guaranteed salary (for when he retired from coaching) plus half the moon to coach here.
We didn't know then that the NCAA had sent us a letter in January to answer to charges.
Remember UMASS?
They answered to charges too. When?
RIGHT after Calipari left.
For you folks who say he wan't implicated in either case at Memphis or UMASS, I'll point out that Eddie Sutton & Hal Mumme weren't implicated at UK either.
Recruits do not have escape clauses in their LOIs. Its been a binding commitment between school and recruit...and Cal used that with Cousins, who originally wanted one in case Mike Davis wasn't at UAB.
Cal will get you the one and dones, they come with a price tag.
You're always recruiting the NEXT one, and then you find out your old one had baggage a year after he leaves. Thats why I am against reruiting those kinds of players. I want the guys who will stay with you for 3-4 years before they think about going pro.
I do not hate UK as a school.
I actually live in Madisonville...I have 4 grandchildren who live here....and I moved back here to be closer to them.
But yeah, Cal burned us...and he keeps trying to hurt us any way he can. He is either talking about having to sell tickets (which if Louisville or Cincy hadn't left for the BE he wouldn't have had to do) or someother backhanded comment about us (or its his asst Robic doing it)...either way he seems kinda ticked that Pastner didn't fall on his face, and that we're still somewhat relevant.
Kent got Fired from 1070 the fan.
HAHAHAHAHA!!!!
