A furious second-half comeback put Kentucky State in position to win its first game of the season.
Jamal Charles’ 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining in regulation pushed Kentucky State’s game against Benedict College into overtime after KSU fell behind by 16 in the second half.
The Thorobreds (0-2) took an 81-80 lead two minutes into the overtime period on Jarrod Gay’s 3-point shot, but the offense for both teams hit the skids after that.
Benedict’s Trevor Eichelberger made the only shot for either team in the final three minutes of the contest. It was enough to give the Tigers an 82-81 win and a 2-0 start to the season.
Kentucky State missed its final four shots of the contest.
The Thorobreds trailed 49-38 at halftime, but fought their way back to take the lead behind a 20-point half by Tony Johnson.
Johnson’s layup with three and a half minutes in regulation completed the comeback for K-State, giving the Thorobreds a 69-68 lead.
Johnson finished the game with 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting from the field and 3-of-10 shooting from the foul line.
Parysh Munroe had a double-double for KSU, finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Gay and Patrick Dawson were the other two players scoring in double figures for K-State with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Aubrey Brown led Benedict with 21 points and Kennie Eberhart chipped in 19.
Kentucky State outrebounded Benedict 45 to 31 but committed six more turnovers than the Tigers.
The Thorobreds travel to Augusta, Ga., Monday to play Paine College
