Kentucky 73
Stanford 65 F/OT
Final from Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico
After an effort that John Calipari will surely use as a learning experience, the Kentucky Wildcats managed to do just enough to send the Cancun Challenge championship game into overtime. In the overtime period, they put Stanford away to win the game 73-65.
Game Recap from ESPN: Freshman sensation John Wall scored a season-best 23 points, including clutch shots in the final minute that sent the game to overtime, and No. 5 Kentucky closed with an eight-point run for a 73-65 victory over gritty Stanford on Wednesday night in the championship game of the Cancun Challenge at the Moon Palace Resort.
Playing his fifth college game, Wall capped a big night with a slam dunk at the final horn, setting off a wild celebration by Kentucky players before a crowd of 1,425.
Wall hit a 12-foot fadeaway jumper from the right wing to tie the score at 61 with 30.6 seconds remaining in regulation, then two free throws with 2.4 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Fellow freshman Eric Bledsoe made an NBA-length 3-pointer with 33 seconds to go that gave Kentucky a 69-65 lead it did not relinquish.
Notes:
- Great performance for Ramon Harris tonight; he was everywhere and ultimately was a difference-maker for Kentucky tonight
- DeMarcus Cousins is always walking a fine line between being the best big man in the country and having a crazy meltdown
- Cousins looked like he just discovered a ghost before he shot his free throws near the end of the game; he missed the first and then called his own number by attempting to miss the second intentionally; the result - he went over the back on the attempted rebound and fouled out of the game, leading to a verbal tirade from Coach Calipari
- Dodson returned to the lineup but was ineffective in the game
- John Wall scored 23 points and two of the most pressure-packed free throws you'll ever see - down 2 points with 2.4 seconds on the clock
- Patterson quietly grabbed another double-double with 12 and 11
- UK's bench was largely ineffective again tonight; in fact, Harris is the only bench player that had any production in the game; no other reserves scored
- Most of the game felt like Kentucky was in "siesta" mode, but they earned the victory and at the end of the day, that's the objective; Kentucky now sits at 6-0 with an apparent easy game coming up against UNC-Asheville

- The Cancun Challenge is weird in more ways than I can describe: the way the games are setup is strange, the final 2 games are played in a resort ballroom, the locker rooms are like partitioned off hallways, the logos are terrible (hence my addition above), the television coverage is on CBS College Sports (which surely obtained their highest ratings ever tonight, I could go on...but you get the point
- I can picture Billy Gillispie and Bill Self sitting at a bar having a barrel of laughs as they watched tonight's game
