North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams had a Presbyterian College fan escorted out of the arena over the weekend for making negative comments about one of his players. Really Roy? What do you expect fans from other teams to do?
WralSportsFan.com has a video of the altercation and a portion of Williams' post-game press conference.
Here is a rundown of the video:
- Williams and several UNC players can be seen looking into the stands; Williams tells the fan to "Shut up" and then says "yeah, I'm talking to you."; he then motions for security
- Security then removes the stunned Presbyterian fan from the arena
- By the way, the "rowdy" hell-raiser was screaming at Deon Thompson to miss a free throw
- North Carolina won the game 103-64, just for the record
In the press conference, Williams was asked to explain what happened with the fan. His reply:
"Somebody offered me free ice cream tonight and I was trying to figure out who it was so I'd know where to go get it."
When further prodded, he responded with:
"You know, when an idiot runs out on the field, you know what they do now, they don't show the idiot running out on the field because it just gives them more publicity. I don't think anybody should yell anything negative at our players, period. Let's don't make it a bigger thing than it is. I just don't think anyone should yell negative things towards our players that come in on our tickets to watch our game. If it were a playground, I'd have a lot of different ideas, but I'm from the mountains."
He was then asked if it was vulgar or anything like that:
"I've said all I'm going to say...about that...and, if you don't have any other questions that can be all I need to say about anything."
So, basically, fans of other teams are not allowed to cheer against mighty North Carolina while attending a game in the Dean Dome. What a joke...

He paid for a ticket to a basketball game - not a pro golf event. If he wants to scream at a player on the other team, that is still allowed the last time I checked.

I had a long conversation with Denise Ginyard, the mother of Marcus Ginyard. She attends every game. She is a classy lady, well educated, and she told me that the fan was screaming profanities and being very disruptive. She said it was easy to hear him and he was especially vocal about Deon. She said she heard him use the F word several times. She said she did not know if he was intoxicated or not but that she thought it was the right thing to do to have him removed.
