Hazard's Josh Whitaker Signs with Pikeville College

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – A highly-decorated player from Perry County will join the Pikeville College men’s basketball program next year. In doing so, he’ll be reunited with his brother.

Josh Whitaker, a 6-0 guard from Hazard High School, signed today to play for the Bears. There, he’ll join his brother Ryan, who will be a senior next season.

Whitaker was the 14th Region MVP and a member of last season’s Kentucky Junior All-Stars. He was named to the 14th Region All-Tournament team three times, was twice honored on the All “A” Classic all-tournament team and was on the Sweet 16 All-Tournament team in 2008.

In his career, Josh scored 1,957 points, handed out 520 assists, had 375 steals and 325 rebounds.
“Obviously, Josh’s stats speak for themselves,” said Coach Kelly Wells. “He’s a solid player who we believe will develop into a nice college basketball player. We also are happy to bring Josh here because he comes from a tremendous family with whom we already have a very good relationship. There are a lot of positives about bringing someone like Josh Whitaker to the program.”

Josh brings the same type of hard-nosed savvy to the team as his brother, who provided a tremendous defensive presence to the Bears this season. In addition to his abilities on the defensive end, Ryan averaged 3.9 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 87.5 percent from the free throw line and sinking 15 three-point shots.

Josh Whitaker was a four-time WYMT Classic all-tournament team player and is second on the all-time scoring list amongst players in that event. He led the Bulldogs to back-to-back 14th Region titles as a sophomore and junior.

Quick Note on Patrick Patterson

I think it's important to note that Kent Spencer confirmed with Patrick Patterson's mother, Tywanna, today and she confirmed that Patrick did not officially enter the NBA Draft today.

He will continue to think about it because if a player submits the paperwork twice, he loses his option to return to school.

Here are Spencer's posts on Twitter:

KentSpencer Tywanna Patterson told me tonight nothing is official for Patrick... and he's not made a decision.

KentSpencer She says Patrick asked his parents a few days ago for more time... and he'll make his final decision in a couple of weeks.

KentSpencer Since he submitted paper work last year, if he does it again.. there's not turning back... he's in the draft.

Five Kentucky Wildcats Declare for NBA Draft

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky freshmen Eric Bledsoe, DeMarcus Cousins, Daniel Orton and John Wall and junior Patrick Patterson will enter their names in this year’s NBA Draft. All five players are projected as first-round picks.

It marks the second straight season a UK player has declared early for the draft. All-American Jodie Meeks decided to forego his senior season last year to turn pro.

Bledsoe averaged 11.3 ppg while hitting 49 three-pointers and shooting 38 percent from behind the line in his freshman campaign. Bledsoe finished sixth on UK’s all-time freshman scoring list (419), second on the three-point field goals made list (49) and fourth on the freshman assist list (107).

“I never thought I’d be in this position after one year,” Bledsoe said. “Coach Cal pushed us all to be the best we could be and he believes I’m prepared to take my game to the next level. I want to thank the fans for all their support this year.”

Cousins was second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.1 ppg while posting a team-best 9.8 rpg average, all in only 23.5 minutes per game. He destroyed the UK freshman rebounding record by nearly 100 rebounds and scored the second-most points by a UK freshman, behind teammate John Wall.

The Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Year also led the Wildcats in double-doubles this season with 20, the most by a UK player since 1973 and the fourth most in a season in Kentucky basketball history.

“Coach challenged me to grow on and off the court this season,” Cousins said. “I believe my game expanded along with my maturity. This year was the most fun I’ve ever had playing basketball and a lot of it had to do with the support I got from our fans.”

Orton served as the Wildcats’ sixth man this season and finished averaging 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds. He was second on the team in blocked shots with 53 and ranked eighth in the SEC in blocks per game (1.4).

“Being at Kentucky allowed me to play with some of the most talented players in the country,” Orton said. “Battling with DeMarcus (Cousins) and Patrick (Patterson) every day helped improve my game. I want to thank the coaching staff for helping put me in a position to be drafted this year.”

Patterson ranked second in the SEC and 12th nationally in field goal percentage (.575). He recorded nine double-doubles this season, fourth most in the SEC, and 11 double-digit rebounding performances. He finished his junior season ranked 13th on Kentucky’s all-time scoring list (1,564) and sixth on Kentucky’s career double-double list with 30.

“I want to thank the fans who have supported me all three years,” Patterson said. “I also want to thank the coaches for putting me in a position to showcase other parts of my game as well as my versatility. Lexington and UK will always be a special place to me.”

Wall led the Wildcats in scoring (16.6), assists (6.5) and steals (1.8) while setting the school single-season assist record with 241. The Adolph Rupp National Player of the Year recorded five double-doubles on the season, three in points and assists, and two in points and rebounds, making him the first player in UK history to record double-doubles in points and rebounds and points and assists.

“I’m not the same player as when I arrived at UK,” Wall said. “I believe I’m ready for the next challenge as Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans were the last two years under Coach Cal. I want to thank my teammates and the fans for all their support this year. I love them.”

“I’ve spoken with all five guys concerning the NBA and have encouraged them to put their names in the draft,” UK head coach John Calipari said. “They’ve all met individually with our compliance office to make sure they have a full understanding of eligibility rules and academic responsibilities. I’m so proud of these five young men, with everything they did for us on the court and the way they represented us off of it.

“It’s extremely unusual for four freshmen from the same team to have this opportunity, but it’s my job as a coach to prepare these young men for such opportunities.”

Curious What the NBA Scouts Think About the Wildcats?

I was curious also, so I contacted one today to find out.

Here are some current pre-draft thoughts from an actual NBA Scout:

Cousins - Top 3 talent, but can be a loose cannon. No way he slips past 5.

Patterson - 1st rounder for sure, not a lottery pick, though.

Orton - Body is NBA-ready, but game isn't. Starter-potential and is a late 1st rounder now, draft stock could make a huge leap if he decides to stay for another year.

Bledsoe - Fringe 1st round guy because of speed and athleticism. Intriguing though.

Wall - No. 1 pick, no doubt about it. Boy has all the physical tools of an elite NBA PG and is ahead of where D. Rose was at this time. Is a consistent jump-shot away from being lethal. Go make some money, kid.

NOTE: NBA scouts are a little "quirky" this time of the year, so the scout wished to remain anonymous.

Yates Named National Champions; Shelby Valley Top 50

Yates High School (Tx.) has been named national champions in high school basketball by Rivals.com.

The Lions, who feature future Western Kentucky guard Brandon "Snap" Peters, finished the season 34-0 and set a national record for games over 100 points scored.

The decisive game for Yates was a one-point victory over Neumann-Goretti (Pa.), who finished second in the Rivals rankings.

Kentucky state champions Shelby Valley High School are ranked No. 49 in the final rankings.

Ballard High School finishes the season at No. 82.

Luke Cothron on Kentucky: "They are still in the mix"

I just talked to 2010 power forward Luke Cothron to verify that he has indeed cut his final list to three and is no longer considering Kentucky.

Luke says reports that he is only considering three schools are a bit premature.

Yesterday, it was reported that he has cut his list to three: Alabama, Auburn and Marquette. There was also speculation that Alabama has the inside track at landing Cothron.

He confirmed that he has looked at those three schools closely, but Kentucky is certainly in the mix.

"Yeah, they (UK) are in the mix," he plainly stated.

I talked to him about reports yesterday that stated he is no longer interested in Kentucky and I asked him if those reports are false.

"Yeah they are," he responded.

I asked Luke what he is looking for in a college home and he said, "a winning program and a great head coach."

Luke also confirmed that he plans to take a Kentucky visit very soon but he does not want the dates announced.

Cothron is a 6-8 power forward that ranks No. 33 on the Rivals 150 List for 2010.

Lance Stephenson to Leave Cincinnati; Enter NBA Draft

Cincinnati's Lance Stephenson plans to leave the school and enter the NBA Draft. At this time, it appears that he has no intentions of returning.

Breaking news from ZagsBlog.com:

The 6-foot-5 guard will submit his paperwork to the NBA and plans to enter the june NBA Draft.

“I have decided to withdraw from the University of Cincinnati and enter my name into this year’s NBA draft,” Stephenson said. “After carefully reviewing my options, it is now clear to me that the need to emotionally and financially support my family, especially my young daughter, along with my long-standing and burning passion to play in the NBA, outweighs my desire to return to the University of Cincinnati.

The 19 points were not a career high for the former Wildcat. He scored 21 points in a game during his time in Milwaukee.

Tayshaun Prince, another former Kentucky star, had 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals for the Pistons.

Kentucky No Longer in Mix for Luke Cothron

Luke Cothron, a 6-8 power forward in the 2010 Class, has cut his list to three: Alabama, Auburn and Marquette according to Jerry Meyer of Rivals.com.

He cut Kentucky and Tennessee from his list and there is a growing feeling that he may be close to committing to Alabama and Anthony Grant.

Here is an excerpt of an article from AL.com:

Red Springs, N.C., power forward Luke Cothron, a 6-foot-8 player who is rated by Rivals as the nation's 33rd-best prospect for 2010, has narrowed his list to Alabama, Auburn and Marquette, according to an update today from Rivals' basketball recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer.

That news eliminates formidable powerhouses Kentucky and Tennessee. And as Meyer notes, Cothron has visited Alabama but has yet to visit Auburn or Marquette, which is a pretty clear indicator that the Tide is in good shape. Another important note: Cothron is originally from Huntsville and grew up an Alabama fan.

Best and Worst of NCAA Tournament and 2009-10 Season

SportingNews.com and Yahoo! Sports takes a look at the season and NCAA Tournament that was this season.

Mike DeCourcy of SportingNews.com looks at the best and worst from the entire season. He mentions Kentucky as playing in one of the best games of the season:

3. Kentucky 75, Mississippi State 74 (OT). DeMarcus Cousins' tying putback to force extra time gave this game the season's most improbable ending.

His top choice for best game is Kansas State's 101-96 win over Xavier in the NCAA Tournament. He wonders if it is "the finest NCAA Tournament game since - Kentucky-Duke 1992?"

Jason King of Yahoo! Sports focuses on the highs and lows of the NCAA Tournament. He thinks the Kentucky Wildcats suffered the worst loss in the entire tournament:

Worst Loss: Even though it featured three freshman starters, Kentucky’s players were recruited to win a national championship this season – mainly because everyone knew all along that John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe were one-and-dones. That the Wildcats lost to West Virginia in the Elite Eight makes the 2009-10 season somewhat of a disappointment.

John Wall Named One of Five Finalists for Wooden Award

Oklahoma City Says They Would Draft Daniel Orton

Representative's of the Oklahoma City Thunder told ESPN's Chad Ford that they are high on Kentucky's Daniel Orton and would draft him in the first round if he were still available. The Thunder will likely be picking in the early 20s in the first round, but several other GM's have stated that they might take Orton even higher.

Here is an excerpt:

But as we first reported several weeks ago, Orton has caught the attention of a number of NBA GMs, the most prominent of which is the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Sam Presti. According to a source close to the process, the Thunder are sending signals that if Orton is in the draft, they’d take him with one of their two first-round picks. Currently that would put Orton in the early 20s. However, a few other GMs have told ESPN.com that they’d consider taking Orton even higher.

Complete Article

In related news, DraftExpress.com has extensive pre-draft breakdowns on Orton and fellow teammate Eric Bledsoe. Definitely worth a read and here is an excerpt:

The main intrigue around Orton’s potential as an NBA player revolves around his physical tools. Standing 6-10, with a wide, chiseled frame, an excellent wingspan and above average athleticism, Orton passes the look test and then some for what NBA teams seek from at a player at his position. He is fairly nimble, runs the court competently, can get off his feet, has a solid second bounce and very good hands on top of that. Simply put, there just aren’t many players around like him, which makes him somewhat of a commodity even in a draft as deep as this one is with big men.

Former Campbellsville Coach George Sadler Passes Away

Former Campbellsville University men's basketball head coach George Sadler passed away Monday, April 5, 2010 in Louisville. He was 91.

Sadler was the first head coach for Tiger basketball at then Campbellsville College when the school first joined the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) and competed in the NAIA in 1964-65.

During his two year tenure, he recorded the Tigers' first NAIA basketball victory with a win over Cumberland College, now University of the Cumberlands, 88-70. He also recruited the first African-American men's basketball player prior to the 1964-65 season, Robert "Bob" Murphy.

Another one of his first recruits was Campbellsville Athletic Hall of Fame member Ronnie Hord, who says if it wasn't for Sadler, he would not be in Campbellsville today.

"If I've had any success, I'd have to give him credit for it. I am in Campbellsville because of him," said Hord, who has owned H&W Sports Shop in Campbellsville since 1969. "He was a great man. I had all the admiration for him in the world. He was a great Christian man … he and his wife were great inspirations to a lot of people at Campbellsville when they were there."

In addition to coaching basketball, Sadler was an assistant professor for health and physical education. He also served as head baseball coach and head tennis coach for the Tigers.

Salder went on to coach tennis and teach at Morehead State University, where the school's 12-court facility is now named in his honor.

The Fake Eric Bledsoe Declares for the NBA Draft

Some of you likely read a Twitter post from Eric Bledsoe last night that stated his intentions to enter the NBA Draft.

Many other people saw it, as well, including ESPN's own Pat Forde. Forde and many others re-tweeted the message for their followers to see.

But wait, there was one big problem, the original message came from a fake Twitter account and was not the real Eric Bledsoe at all.

The fake account, known as EricBledsoe24, was exposed as a fraud earlier in the season by the University of Kentucky. Still, the account manages to have over 4,750 followers - including several members of the national media.

Here are some of the messages from last night:

EricBledsoe24 Entering the draft. big blue has been good thanks guys.

Forde goes all in:

espn4d Expected UK exodus picks up steam. RT @EricBledsoe24 Entering the draft. big blue has been good thanks guys.

Then says oops:

espn4d Bledsoe account looks like a fake, FYI. Regret the re-tweet

For the record, the Fake John Wall is very happy with last night's shenanigans. Believe it or not, the FAKE John Wall Twitter account has almost 19,000 followers. That is even after I interviewed the guy and he admitted that it is fake.

NOTE: No word yet on where the fake Eric Bledsoe will be drafted.

Terrence Williams Has Some Advice for John Wall

T-Will thinks Wall should get out of Kentucky as quickly as possible.

Here is an excerpt:

"With him able to be the No.1 or No.2 pick, it's hard to go away from that," Williams said of Wall. "Let's say he's playing summer ball and he gets hurt and misses the entire year, then he's got to come back the following year to prove himself and then he may be the 28th pick. The difference would be millions of dollars."

Kentucky State Removes Interim Tag from Clarence Moore

Frankfort, KY - Clarence Moore has a passion for excellence. It carried him through a state championship in high school, an NCAA championship game against the University of Connecticut when he was at Georgia Tech University and it has fueled his coaching careers at the high school and university level.

Now it has won him the head men's basketball coaching job at Kentucky State University. Moore, who served one year as an assistant coach and one year as the interim head coach of the Thorobreds, said he is ready to restore the program to its winning tradition. But he knows winning is not everything.

The Norco, La., native wants to build a solid team that has a strong work ethic on and off the court. He emphasizes academics for his student-athletes because he said it will benefit them after they graduate, but it also shows him how much they are willing to work in practice.

"If you are a good student in class, you are a good student on the floor," Moore said. "The mind is a muscle, and you have to exercise it. By Jan. 15, we shouldn't still be working on the same things we were working on Oct. 15. The players should be able to focus and pick up what you are teaching them."

It was his dedication to training and academics that stood out for Dr. Denisha Hendricks, KSU's director of athletics. Though she looked at other candidates for the head men's basketball coach position, she said Moore distinguished himself as an interim coach during the 2009-2010 year.

"He emerged as the best candidate for us because of the way he brought the team together," Hendricks said. "We were also impressed with the way he handled the team, the amount of teaching that occurred during practice, the care he provided the team on and off the court and the importance he placed on academics."

Elisha Justice is Sticking with Lousville

I just confirmed that Elisha Justice is firm on his commitment to Louisville and is excited about getting started this June.

Shelby Valley head coach Jason Booher talked to Justice earlier tonight.

"He is excited about the opportunity to play for Rick Pitino, the Louisville Cardinals and in the Big East," Booher told me a few minutes ago.

Justice was contacted last week by Kentucky head coach John Calipari about possibly playing for the Wildcats.

He was named AP Player of the Year in Kentucky earlier today and has already led Shelby Valley to a state championship, been named Mr. Basketball and captured the Gatorade Player of the Year award in the state.

He will enter Louisville as a walk-on with the Rick Pitino promise of a scholarship if one becomes available.

Ex-Cat Steve Masiello is Front Runner at Iona

Former Kentucky guard Steve Masiello is now the front runner for the Iona head coaching job according to NYDailyNews.com.

Masiello, now an assistant at Louisville, becomes the primary choice after Fran Fraschilla dropped out of consideration.

Excerpt of article:

Assuming Fraschilla is out of the picture permanently, Masiello would be a solid choice for the Gaels. He's a New York guy and his family still lives in White Plains. He also has MAAC coaching experience, having been an assistant coach at Manhattan under Bobby Gonzalez for four seasons and just completed his fifth season as Rick Pitino's assistant coach at Louisville.

Masiello comes with the label of an astute recruiter. According to Rivals.com, Masiello helped the Cardinals land a pair of top 10 recruiting classes in the past three years. The 32 year-old Masiello is said to be very similar in style to Willard, which would make for an easy transition period for him and the Gaels.

Bill Self Is Looking to Add "Another Stud"

Kansas head coach Bill Self told Andy Katz Sunday that he needs to sign another player and possibly two for his 2010 recruiting class.

"We have to sign us another stud this April," Self said. "It's really important. The biggest thing is that we have to have a good spring with our returning guys and get them to have confidence moving forward."

It is important to note Self's desire to add another player as the Jayhawks are in head-to-head recruiting battles with Kentucky for the likes of Brandon Knight, Josh Selby and Doron Lamb.

Katz also notes in the same article that John Calipari does not expect John Wall to return for his sophomore season.

Ex-Cat Heshimu Evans Leads Benfica to SuperCup Trophy

Former Kentucky Wildcat Heshimu Evans is still playing basketball at a high level in Portugal.

Evans plays for Benfica, the champions of Portugal's top-level LPB league.

Over the weekend, Benfica captured the SuperCup Compal trophy with a 64-57 win over 1 De Agosto, the African champions.

Evans led Benfica with 12 points and 7 rebounds.

During Benfica's championship season, Evans has averaged 15.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.9 steals per game. He signed with the club in January.

Evans came to Kentucky in 1997 after transferring from Manhattan. He was a two-year starter for the Cats and an integral part of the 1998 NCAA Championship team. He averaged 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds as a junior and 11.8 points and 5.1 rebounds as a senior.

Comparing West Virginia's Games Against UK and Duke

Out of curiosity, I took a look at West Virginia's stat lines in their last two games: a win over Kentucky and a loss at the hands of Duke.

Here is a comparison of the numbers:

vs. Kentucky (W, 73-66)

20-52 (38.5%) FG, 10-23 (43.5%) 3PT, 23-34 (67.6%) FT, 34 REB, 14 AST, 5 STL, 6 BLK, 12 TO

vs. Duke (L, 78-57)

19-46 (41.3%) FG, 5-12 (41.7%) 3PT, 14-19 (73.7%) FT, 24 REB, 11 AST, 1 STL, 4 BLK, 10 TO

My Thoughts:

- Field goal shooting is pretty similar
- WVU came out like world beaters against UK and nailed ten 3-pointers; they averaged 6.8 on the season and hadn't hit 10 or more in a game since February 6 against St. John's
- West Virginia's hot shooting and Kentucky's lack of an offensive attack - largely due to WVU's strong 1-3-1 zone defense - were too much for the young Wildcats to overcome

Here are 3-point stats in games leading up to UK game:

Washington 4-15
Missouri 5-15
Morgan State 4-15
Georgetown 4-16
Notre Dame 3-19
Cincinnati 4-20
Villanova 8-24
Georgetown 6-21
Cincinnati 7-19
UConn 4-18
Seton Hall 4-18
Providence 2-12
Pittsburgh 7-21
Villanova 7-27
St. John's 10-15

Isn't that just the luck of it? West Virginia comes out and goes +15 on Kentucky from beyond the 3-point line.

Breaking Down Some of UK's NBA Draft Prospects

Pro Basketball Talk takes a look at several Kentucky players that may or may not enter the NBA Draft.

Here are their thoughts:

1. We learned John Wall is who we thought he was.

So, to recap, he showed he's a tremendous athlete with incredible vision, and elite ability to speed to the basket, and a versatile scorer, but one who struggles from behind the line and turns the ball over a lot.

2. We learned DeMarcus Cousins is as good, and immature, as advertised.

Cousins is a beast, and his combination of size and athleticism could make him a contender for rookie of the year next season. His immaturity could also chain him to a coach's doghouse for all eternity.

3. We learned Eric Bledsoe probably needs another year.

Another year for Bledsoe alongside the kind of talent Calipari can bring in (and has brought in, including similarly intriguing prospect in a few years Orton) should boost him to the level he needs to be at. He just needs to be patient, and he'll get his chance.

Andy Katz Article on Butler's Shelvin Mack

Andy Katz of ESPN.com has a nice article out today on Butler standout Shelvin Mack.

Mack, who played high school basketball for Lexington Bryan Station, grew up a Kentucky fan but felt he wasn't the right fit for the UK basketball program.

He also talks about former Kentucky head coach Billy Gillispie offering him a scholarship.

Here is an excerpt:

"I wasn't the right fit," Mack said. "That was OK. It didn't bother me. It was very easy for me to be overshadowed. My job on the team was to [assist] other players and make sure they did their jobs."

Mack said once he committed to Butler and it was apparent that he was headed to Indianapolis, there was sudden interest from Gillispie. He said Gillispie offered a scholarship, but Mack was locked in at Butler.

All Mack has done since he arrived at Butler is win. He started all 32 games as a freshman when the Bulldogs won 26 games. He started all 37 games this season.

Cory Joseph and Findlay Prep Capture NHSI Title

Cory Joseph, who has received some recent attention from Kentucky led Findlay Prep with 17 points as the Pilots (32-2) defeated Montverde (Fl.) Academy 59-46 in the championship game of the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational on Saturday at Coppin State in Baltimore.

Findlay Prep repeated as champions at the tournament, which is in its second year.

Joseph was 6-10 from the field. Teammate Tristan Thompson contributed 15 points, 11 rebounds and 2 blocks.

Montverde Academy ends the season at 23-5, including a win over Findlay Prep earlier in in the season.

Note on Joseph: There are rumors out there that Kentucky is trying to make a late push on Joseph. Those are only rumors at this point, but it's worth keeping an eye on.

Big Blue Nation: Don't Be That Fan

Kentucky freshman (keep in mind that this is an 18-19 year old kid) Daniel Orton posted a screenshot from his Facebook account a few moments ago on Twitter.

You can see the image to the right - I have marked out the name and picture for privacy. Even though Orton posted this publicly, I don't think the responsible person is what's relevant here.

There is no excuse for these types of actions and it's shameful that it has came down to this type of situation for Orton. Now, I do realize that this is not an accurate representation of Big Blue Nation as I have found nothing but love and support for Orton, but it only takes a couple of things like this to give everyone a bad name.

I also realize that things are not always what they seem on the Internet. This post could very well be from a rival fan or even someone that is just trying to "stir the pot" a bit. Either way, it is inexcusable and now that this person's account has been published publicly, I would venture a guess that he's in for a nice evening of damage control.

Daniel - speaking for AllKYHoops.com - I wish you nothing but the best and will be following your career at every stop (whether that is in Lexington or at the next level). Best wishes and God Bless!

NOTE: I normally try to ignore this type of thing, but in this particular situation, something needs to be said. That is pathetic and embarrassing.

Orton Tweets That He Is Aware of Scholarship Situation

Daniel Orton, who announced last night on Facebook that he is leaving for San Francisco today, posted a few thoughts on Twitter this morning.

Here are Orton's "Tweets":

People I KNOW that if I dropped outta school it would cost UK a scholarship. I'm not self centered or a me person at all. I'm a team player.

That's why I didn't. Your scholarship won't be taken away for all you fans out there that need it so badly!!

Haha Happy Easter everybody!

My Thoughts:

Those are some interesting thoughts from Orton. He seems a little frustrated at comments he has heard or read about his decision to leave Lexington and that is understandable to an extent.

I think Orton is a good kid that has been faced with a difficult decision and he has made the choice that he feels is best for his situation. I wish him nothing but the best.

My thoughts are that we will not see Orton back in a Kentucky uniform and he is likely to be a first round draft pick (currently projected in the 15-25 range). I do like that Orton is at least leaving himself the option to return if it comes down to it.

Marquis Teague May Pull Trigger Soon; UK and U of L in Mix

Marquis Teague, the top-rated point guard in the 2011 Class, may announce his college choice as early as this week according to Jody Demling of the Courier-Journal.

Demling reports:

Indianapolis Pike junior guard Marquis Teague's much-anticipated college announcement could come within a week.

Teague's father, Shawn, told The Indianapolis Star last week that a decision could be made soon, and his son told Scout.com that he might make a pick next weekend.

Teague has been considered a Louisville lean for a long time, but Kentucky is reportedly in the mix pretty heavily.

My Thoughts: Teague would be a huge get for Kentucky, but I expect him to commit to Louisville.

Kievyn Lila to Play for Eastern Kentucky

NJ.com reports that 6-5 guard Kievyn Lila will attend Eastern Kentucky.

Here is an excerpt:

Armand, who will attend Fordham, averaged 26 points per game and was the team's most consistent player. Joel Wright, a 6-7, 210-pound wing, averaged 18 points and seven rebounds while Akron-bound Alex Abreu, a 5-10 point guard from Bayamon, Puerto Rico, put up 14 points and nine assists per game. Teammate Kievyn Lila, a 6-5 wing guard, averaged 19 points and seven rebounds and will attend Eastern Kentucky. Source

There's not a ton of information out there about Lila, but I did find this video on YouTube that illustrates his athleticism:

Happy Easter

I would like to wish Happy Easter to everyone this morning.

Today is a special day with special meaning. Here is a little background on the Easter holiday and what it means:

On Easter Sunday, Christians celebrate the resurrection of the Lord, Jesus Christ. It is typically the most well-attended Sunday service of the year for Christian churches.

Christians believe according to Scripture, that Jesus came back to life, or was raised from the dead, three days after his death on the cross. As part of the Easter season, the death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion, is commemorated on Good Friday, always the Friday just before Easter. Through his death, burial and resurrection, Jesus paid the penalty for sin, thus purchasing for all who believe in him, eternal life in Christ Jesus.

Marqus Blakely Does a Double Dunk and the John Wall Dance

Daniel Orton to Leave Kentucky but There's a Twist

Kentucky freshman Daniel Orton posted on Facebook tonight that he is leaving Lexington and will be heading to San Francisco.

Here is his post:

Daniel Joseph Orton On to San Fran Tomorrow....time to get to work!

There is a bit of an unexpected twist, however.

He followed that post with one stating that he is leaving Lexington, but will be able to complete his classes remotely.

I honestly had no idea that there was even an option for him to complete his classes from California, but that is what he is stating.

The good news would be that if he can complete his coursework, he will not damage Kentucky's APR and he will be able to hold on to his eligibility - just in case.

The bad news is that his plans are seemingly pretty clear - his mind is set on the NBA and if he is projected this summer where he is projected now, he is likely gone for good.

NOTE: I spoke to UK tonight and there is nothing official on Orton's status or future.

Butler, Shelvin Mack Advance to NCAA Title Game

(5) Butler 52
(5) Michigan State 50

NCAA Tournament National Semifinal

Game recap by AllKYHoops.com:

The Butler Bulldogs have continued an improbable run to secure a spot in the NCAA national championship game after a 52-50 victory over Michigan State.

The Bulldogs are one win away from the school's first-ever national championship.

Butler (33-4) was led by Gordon Hayward with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Lexington native Shelvin Mack, from Bryan Station High School, added 14 points.

Durrell Summers led the Spartans (28-9) with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Korie Lucious and Draymond Green add 12 points each.

Neither team shot the ball particularly well, but Butler was able to win the low-scoring battle by knocking down 17-24 (70.8%) free throws and forcing Michigan State into committing 16 turnovers.

Kentucky's Darnell Dodson May Be Back After All

I just got off the phone with what I consider to be a good source who says Darnell Dodson may be back on the Kentucky roster next season.

There have been rumors that Dodson would be leaving Kentucky and possibly even entering the 2010 NBA Draft, but it seems there is reason to believe he will be back on the UK roster in 2010-11.

A good source told me this morning, "Darnell did have some issues that could lead to a Kentucky departure, but those things are being handled efficiently. I don't think there's any decisions made at this point. There will probably be something set in stone within the next couple of weeks."

When I asked the source his opinion on the matter, he responded, "I fully expect Darnell Dodson to be on the Kentucky roster next season, but that is my opinion only based on what I know of the situation."

From the sounds of it, there's still a chance it could go either way, but I personally feel a little better about Dodson's situation after hearing those comments.

Joe Crawford is Finding His Groove in China

Former Kentucky Wildcat guard Joe Crawford is off to an excellent start in China's top-level CBA League.

Crawford, who plays for Jiangsu Nangang Dragons Nanjing, is averaging 20.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in his first three games in China.

He scoring 13 in his first game, but picked it up in the other two - scoring 27 and 22. He was 5-10 from long range in the last two games.

Crawford was drafted by the Lakers out of Kentucky, but ended up in the D-League. He worked himself into a stint with the New York Knicks, but found himself in the D-League again to start this season.

He was averaging 17.8 points and 3.1 assists with the Los Angeles D-Fenders this season before choosing to relocate to China.

Former Hilltopper Elgrace Wilborn Stays in Uruguay

Former Western Kentucky forward Elgrace Wilborn will remain in Uruguay for the upcoming Metropolitan League.

He is an athletic big man that transferred to Western Kentucky in 2003-04 from Tennessee.

Billy Kennedy May Be in Play at Tulane After All

Tammy Nunez of The Times-Picayune writes that it may not be as far-fetched for Tulane to get Murray State's Billy Kennedy as it seems.

Kennedy did sign a four-year contract extension within the past week, but the contract buyout is only $50,000 according to WPSD TV in Paducah.

His contract includes a base salary of about $225,000 at Murray State. The Tulane position will reportedly make between $320,000-400,000.

Nunez states, "Kennedy did not answer interview requests from The Times-Picayune of WPSD."
