Chane Behanan Explains Why He Chose Louisville

I spoke with Bowling Green star Chane Behanan this afternoon about his commitment to Louisville and why he chose the Cardinals.

Behanan cited several reasons that ultimately led him to commit to U of L.

"My decision was more about how I will fit into the Louisville system," Behanan said. "They showed me film on my visit and pointed out how I would be used."

He added, "they compared me to Paul Pierce, Jamal Mashburn and Terrence Williams."

Behanan was also impressed with the attention he was given by Louisville head coach Rick Pitino.

"He came to see me over twenty times," the Bowling Green senior pointed out. "He liked me, respected me and respected my game. I like having a chance to play for a Hall of Fame coach."

Bowling Green head coach D.G. Sherrill gave his insight on Behanan's decision.

"He'd seen a bunch of places and in the end, U of L just felt like home," Sherrill stated. "The Louisville players and coaches really embraced Chane."

Sherrill noted that playing in the Big East Conference is really attractive to Behanan.

"The Big East really fits his game,"Sherrill noted.

Behanan is also very impressed with Louisville's facilities, including the new Yum! Center.

With the pressure of recruiting off his shoulders, Behanan plans to focus on his senior season at BGHS.

"I have some unfinished business," Behanan explained.

Bowling Green will certainly be picked by many to win Kentucky's 4th Region and Behanan has to be the preseason favorite to win Mr. Basketball.

Quincy Miller, Deuce Bello May Visit Baylor

According to ZagsBlog.com, both Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello may visit Baylor.

Here is an excerpt:

Quincy Miller and Deuce Bello may still visit Baylor but nothing has been set yet.

“I believe so but I’m not sure about that yet,” Bello, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard from Westchester (N.C.) Country Day, said Tuesday by phone. “I don’t have a date yet.”

Bello and the 6-9 Miller both tripped to Louisville this past weekend and enjoyed it.

Turkish Team Claims It Paid Enes Kanter Over $100,000

Pete Thamel of The New York Times (believe it or not) reports tonight that he has interviewed Nedim Karakas, the general manager of Turkish club team Fenerbahce Ulker.

Karakas claims in the interview that Fenerbahce Ulker paid Kentucky freshman Enes Kanter over $100,000 in cash and benefits over three years when Kanter played for the club.

Here is an excerpt of Thamel's article:

The best recruit in Kentucky’s top-ranked recruiting class, the Turkish center Enes Kanter, received more than $100,000 in cash and benefits over three years from the professional team he played for here, according to the team’s general manager.

In an interview in his office here this week, the general manager of Fenerbahce Ulker, Nedim Karakas, said the club had given banking and housing records to the N.C.A.A. that show Kanter received benefits that could jeopardize his amateur status for college basketball.

“I am sorry for telling this for Enes, but we cannot lie if someone asks the whole story, we cannot hide,” Karakas said.

Complete Article

Thamel adds "If he received the amount of money that Karakas says he did, it would cast serious doubt on his eligibility for the Wildcats."

An advisor for Kanter compares the money he received to expenses paid by prep schools.

My Thoughts: It is important to keep a few things in mind now that this article is out. First, Pete Thamel apparently has a problem with the University of Kentucky and John Calipari. He spends a great deal of his time being a thorn in Calipari's side and this article is filled with his highly motivated agenda.

Next, there was no proof given of any payment and no documentation was provided. It must be noted that the Turkish club team also has an agenda to not only close the pipeline to American, but also to keep Kanter on their roster.

Lastly, $100,000 during a year would be a considerable amount of money. However, $100,000 over three years is not that unacceptable - especially without documentation.

UK and Turkey Wait Patiently as Kanter Decision is Expected in 10-14 Days

John Calipari stated at a book-signing earlier today that an NCAA decision on freshman Enes Kanter's eligibility is expected in 10-14 days.

Mike DeCourcy of SportingNews.com points out UK and its fans are not the only group that is waiting patiently for an NCAA decision. There is also a vested interest from those associated with basketball in Kanter's home country of Turkey.

Here is an excerpt:

Given that Kentucky fans are borderline hysterical regarding most issues involving the Wildcats -- not that there’s anything wrong with that -- many are eagerly awaiting the results of this probe.

But so are a lot of basketball people in Europe.

This is a big deal for them, as well.

Kanter’s circumstance is ominous not only for Fenerbahce, the club where he played in Turkey, but for every European club. If Kanter’s path to NCAA eligibility is not harrowing -- as it was under the old rules for Lucca Staiger at Iowa State or Deniz Kilicli at West Virginia -- more talented young prospects might find it appealing to cross the Atlantic and play here.

Former Murray State Star Leaves NBA for China

Former Murray State star James Singleton has decided to give up an opportunity with the Washington Wizards for a more lucrative contract in China.

Singleton has signed to play next season for the Zinjiang Gyang Hui Flying Tigers.

Here is an excerpt from The Washington Post:

The Wizards had some interest in bringing back Singleton, an undersized but energetic, high-flying forward who averaged 6.1 points and 6.9 rebounds in 32 games -- including three starts -- after arriving in Washington. Singleton had seven games with at least 10 rebounds, including a career-high 21-rebounds in a loss to Indiana last March.

But Singleton said the Wizards were like several NBA teams that expressed interest in signing him to the league minimum. He wouldn't give the terms of the deal but hinted that his contract in China was much more lucrative.

Daniel Orton Makes List of Possible Rookie Disappointments

Former Kentucky big man Daniel Orton makes Ross Geiger's list of 2010-11 NBA Rookie Disappointments.

He is joined by Evan Turner, Al-Farouq Aminu and Ekpe Udoh.

Here is an excerpt about Orton:

C: Daniel Orton, Orlando Magic

Now I understand he was the second-to-last pick in the first round, I understand he was given some attention being a member of the Kentucky Wildcats youth, but what I can’t grasp any understanding in deciding to take a gamble with Orton over Hassan Whiteside. Worst-case scenario for Whiteside is best case scenario for Orton, that’s how bad Orton is. I mean come on, the highlight of Orton’s Summer League in Orlando was him getting tossed for fighting with the Pacers’ Josh McRoberts. For Orton’s sake, I hope he can maybe learn a thing or two from fellow teammates Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat, but I also hope he knows how to save his money. Outside of his rookie contract, I see him finding a tough time finding a job in the league.

Will DeMarcus Cousins Have Attitude Problems?

SacTownRoyalty.com, a Sacramento Kings blog, is in the process of asking 30 questions about the 2010-11 Kings. The latest question:

Will DeMarcus Cousins have attitude problems?

Here is an excerpt:

Boogie is not a criminal -- he's never had so much as a slap on the wrist, something not all of his heralded University of Kentucky teammates could say. Boogie is not a diva -- no one has been more glowing in their review of Cousins than high school coach Otis Hughley and college coach John Calipari. Boogie is feisty, an attribute that lives on the Soft-Tough Scale, somewhere toward "spicy" but higher than "tame." He's not tame. If that's a bad sign, call me Susie.

An online poll follows the article and asks: Will DeMarcus Cousins be suspended by the NBA or Kings at any point this season for any reason?

Almost 400 people have voted so far and the answer is an overwhelming (84%) "No".

Chane Behanan Commits to Louisville

Bowling Green's Chane Behanan just announced that he is committing to the University of Louisville.

Behanan, who is a top 30 player nationally in the 2011 recruiting class, is Kentucky's top-rated high school player.

He gives Louisville a talented big man in the paint and will be a big contributor of coach Rick Pitino's Cardinals. Behanan also has a valid chance to follow another Cardinal, Elisha Justice, as Kentucky's Mr. Basketball.

Behanan chose Louisville over a host of schools including Kentucky, North Carolina, Texas, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Purdue, West Virginia and Western Kentucky.

Tony Wroten Says He Will Decide in September or October

Tony Wroten, a 2011 point guard from Seattle, stated on Twitter recently that he will likely announce his college decision in "September of October."

Wroten has both Kentucky and Louisville on his list along with Washington and several others.

The 6-4 point guard has been tough to gauge with his comments on Twitter, but most seem to think Washington is in a good position.

Wroten noted on Twitter that Hikeem Stewart’s commitment to the University of Washington made him “more excited” to settle on his college destination.
He is planning to visit Louisville in September and has stated several times that he likes Kentucky, although it remains to be seen if Kentucky has a strong offer on the table for Wroten.

Enes Kanter is in The "Next Wave" of Elite Big Men

Hoopsworld.com includes Kentucky freshman Enes Kanter on their list of "The Next Wave of Elite Big Men."

The list includes Kanter, Fab Melo, Tobias Harris, Adreian Payne and Jared Sullinger.

Here is an excerpt about Kanter:

Enes Kanter - 6-9/240 - from Tarzana, CA and committed to Kentucky:

Leave it to John Calipari to sign the most controversial player in the freshman class. Kanter is considered one of the best all-around prospects in college basketball, mainly because he's already player professionally in Turkey. How is he eligible you ask? Well according to Kanter and his family while Enes was part of a club team in Turkey and played at least nine games in Turkey, he was never paid for his services. The NCAA is loosening the rules on international prospects and the club relationship which has opened the door for Kanter to play for Kentucky this season. Kanter is every bit of 6'9 and is fundamentally a well-rounded player. If he has a solid season in Lexington jumping to the NBA is possible, although his family urged him to turn down International professional contracts in order to pursue his college degree, so its possible he passes on the NBA.

Lakers to Derrick Caracter: Lose Weight and Get Paid

The Los Angeles Lakers are going to give former Louisville and UTEP big man Derrick Caracter a chance to play NBA basketball. If he wants guaranteed money, however, he'll need to do one thing - lose some weight and dedicate himself to physical fitness.

Caracter has a $473,000 contract this year with $250,000 guaranteed. If he weights 275 pounds or less on September 10, he will be guaranteed the other $223,000.

Here is an excerpt from NBCSports.com:

Conditioning -- and a commitment to it -- was the question about Caracter coming into the draft. Skills and body he had, but what about the work ethic and desire? The Lakers came up with a clever way to push him, as reported by Sham Sports:

Caracter has a $473,000 contract this year with $250,000 guaranteed. If Caracter weighs 275 pounds or less on Sept. 10, the contract becomes fully guaranteed.

Chane Behanan to Announce Commitment Tomorrow

Evan Daniels of Scout.com reported on Twitter this afternoon that Chane Behanan from Bowling Green High School will announce his commitment tomorrow morning at his school.

Here is Daniels Tweet:

EvanDanielscout Chane Behanan is announcing his college decision tomorrow at 10 o'clock CT time at his high school.

Behanan confirmed his intentions on Facebook:

Chane Mygirlgottagirlfrien Behanan BIG DAY TOMARRO FINALLY CAME TO THE END OF THE RECRUITIN PROCESS .. EVERYBODY KNO N IF U DNT IM ANNOUNCING WAT COLLEGE IM GONE ATTEND TOMARRO !!!!

Behanan visited Louisville over the weekend and also has offers from a host of other high-major schools including Kentucky, Ohio State, Purdue, Cincinnati and West Virginia.

The prevailing thought seems to be that Behanan is headed to Louisville, but he also like his visit to Ohio State and presumably holds an offer from Kentucky - although the Wildcats accepted a commitment from Kyle Wiltjer last week.

2014 Guard James Blackmon Jr. Commits to Indiana

James Blackmon Jr., the 15-year old son of former Kentucky player James Blackmon (pictured), has committed to the Indiana Hoosiers.

Blackmon Jr. is currently the top-rated shooting guard and No. 6 overall in ESPN's 2014 rankings.

Here's an excerpt from IdsNews.com:

“I’ve been to Bloomington a couple of times for a couple of visits, and every time I went there it kept getting better and better,” Blackmon Jr. said. “I could go to another college in another state, but I’m from Indiana, and I grew up in Indiana. It was always one of my top places to go.”

Blackmon Jr. took an unofficial visit to Bloomington to meet with the IU coaching staff and see the Hoosier football team face Towson in its season opener. Shortly after the game, he told Crean IU was the perfect fit for him.

2010-11 Wildcats Will Be "Different" and "Better Defensively"

Kentucky head coach John Calipari stated recently that there will be some differences between the his first and second Kentucky teams.

When comparing the two teams, Calipari stated, "It'll be different. We'll have to be more of an execution team."

Here is an excerpt from SportingNews.com:

Calipari told the fans his first UK team was big and talented enough to make execution less of a priority. "We just bowled you over," he said.

At the other end of the court, blocked shots erased whatever defensive mistakes occurred.

"This year,” he said, “we'll have to be a better team defensively."

John Calipari Enjoys Kentucky's Football Win Over Louisville

Kentucky head coach John Calipari was a star on the sidelines during Kentucky football's 23-16 victory over arch rival Louisville.

Calipari posed for pictures with everyone from former UK quarterback Shane Boyd to "The Heavy Hitter" Darryl Isaacs.

He walked into a section of the field where some Louisville basketball assistants and a group of high profile basketball recruits, including Quincy Miller, Deuce Bello and Chane Behanan, happened to be standing. While no personal contact was made, Calipari's presence sent a powerful message to the U of L assistants and recruits. The television announcers described the looks on the faces of the recruits and assistants as "priceless" when Calipari came near.

The UK head coach tossed a football on the sidelines and even led the Wildcats football team onto the field.

2012 Star Perry Ellis to Visit Kentucky in November

Perry Ellis, one of the top players in the 2012 recruiting class, will visit Kentucky on November 11, according to Larry Vaught of the Danville Advocate-Messenger.

On the November visit, Ellis will watch the Wildcats open the regular season against East Tennessee State.

Here is an excerpt from Vaught's article:

He’s taking trips to Memphis on Oct. 15 for the Tigers’ Midnight Madness as well as Kansas this week.

“Perry really wanted to come back again for a visit when he can see a game, so that is why we are not coming until November,” his mother, Fonda Ellis, said. “The boys don’t have school on Nov. 11 or 12, so it makes it easier for us to travel and then spend Saturday there, too.”

Ellis came to Lexington last summer to tour the campus.

SEC Tournament Venues Announced for Next Decade

The SEC has announced its venue schedule for the league's men's basketball tournament for the next decade. The prestigious event will be hosted in Nashville four times during the next ten years.

Here is the release from the SEC:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Southeastern Conference has entered into a multi-year agreement with the Nashville Sports Council to play its men's basketball tournament at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced Friday. With today's announcement the Music City will serve as host to the annual event four times in the coming decade, adding 2015, 2016 and 2019 to an already agreed upon 2013 tournament.

"We are excited about continuing our relationship with the city of Nashville," Slive said. "Nashville provides SEC teams and fans a great postseason experience. This past year's tournament at Bridgestone Arena was one of the most exciting in recent memory."

"We are thrilled that Music City will continue its partnership with the SEC as host for the men's tournament," Nashville Sports Council president & CEO Scott Ramsey said. "As we experienced this year, the Bridgestone Arena and downtown campus provides an exciting and electric atmosphere for players, fans and media. We are appreciative of the confidence the SEC has in Nashville as a host city and look forward to welcoming everyone back to Nashville on a regular basis over the next decade."

"Our hotels, our restaurants, the entertainment district on Lower Broad all benefited from the thousands of visitors that the tournament drew. It is tremendous that the SEC has decided to return to Music City four more times in the coming years. Downtown is only going to get better, especially with the opening of our new downtown convention center campus in 2013. The tournaments are sure to be a great experience for the fans and a great win for our tourism industry."

Luke Cothron Finds a Home at Massachusetts

Luke Cothron, a 6-8 forward who was once mentioned in the same breath as Kentucky, has found a home at the University of Massachusetts.

Cothron was officially accepted at UMass yesterday. He originally signed with Auburn, but the Southeastern Conference does not accept academic nonqualifiers. He will pay his own way during the 2010-11 school year and will not play or practice with the Minutemen. He will be eligible in 2011-12 and will have a chance to earn back his lost eligibility if he's completed enough credits by the end of his fourth year in college.

Cothron chose the Minutemen over UTEP.

In other UMass news, one-time Western Kentucky commit David Laury will not play for the Minutemen. He will be attending junior college instead.

Dimemag: Team USA Needs Rajon Rondo at World Championships

Dimemag.com states today that Team USA could have used the services of Rajon Rondo during the World Championships.

Here is an excerpt:

While no one knows the complete story surrounding Rondo’s departure from Team USA, we do know that they’re in need of him now. In retrospect, the knocks on Rondo during tryouts now seem silly. Under the assumption that Coach K understood the vast mysteries of “International Basketball” (after all, he somehow beat Spain with Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, LeBron James and Dwight Howard on the court), many went along with the belief that Rondo was just not right for FIBA play. The common criticisms justifying his departure were that he couldn’t shoot and didn’t make free throws.

Under closer examination, these criticism don’t seem consequential. Aside from Chauncey Billups, the USA guards have only shot a combined 29 free throws over five games. And despite his lack of pure shooting ability, Rondo’s stroke is not significantly worse than that of Derrick Rose or Russell Westbrook, the two players he was competing against for a point guard spot. (Note: In 2010, Rose shot 27 percent, Westbrook 22 percent and Rondo 21 percent from three. I’m not sure you feel the need to fly out at any of these bricklayers). Incidentally, Rondo shot the higher percentage from the field than both Rose and Westbrook.

The article adds:

Over the last week it’s become clear that the attributes Rondo has in excess – ball-handling, the ability to decipher defenses and floor leadership – are in short supply on Team USA. Regardless of the reason he was left off the team, it’s hard to justify his absence using his history as a player, or the play of his peers in Turkey.

My Thoughts: I agree 100% with this assessment and I felt that Rondo was the best option for Team USA. I'm not sure what went wrong, but if this team loses due to weak guard play, I'll be the first in line to question Coach K's decision-making.

Results of Eric Bledsoe Investigation Expected Next Week

The law firm investigating the high school academics of former Kentucky star Eric Bledsoe plans to release its findings next week, according to Birmingham Board of Education attorney Afrika Parchman.

Here is an excerpt from The Birmingham News:

The Birmingham News reported that the NCAA visited Birmingham in February asking questions about Bledsoe's academics and residency while in high school.

Since June 24, the Birmingham school system has spent $8,305 on the investigation, which is being conducted independently by the law firm White Arnold & Dowd, according to billing records obtained through an open-records request.

In a July 1 letter, retired federal judge U.W. Clemon, a partner at the law firm, wrote that the firm strives to be cost-effective and the school system's total bill would not exceed $10,000. The letter identified that the Alabama High School Athletic Association requested the investigation into Bledsoe.

Faried, Mack Prove There's More To It Than Recruiting Stars

Morehead State's Kenneth Faried and Butler's Shelvin Mack are solid proof that there is more to college basketball success than recruiting stars from Rivals, Scout or other recruiting services.

The college accolades of Mack and Faried have landed them on FanHouse's "Two-Star or Less All-Star Team."

The team consists of the best players who were no 3-,4- or 5-star recruits out of high school.

Starting Lineup:

PG - Jimmer Fredette, BYU
SG - Shelvin Mack, Butler
SF - Tim Abromaitis, Notre Dame
PF - Kenneth Faried, Morehead State
C - Mike Davis, Illinois

Here are excerpts about Faried and Mack:

PF – Kenneth Faried, Morehead State -- That Kenneth Faried isn't a household name is just an indictment that households don't watch enough college basketball. The power forward with the kind of motor NASCAR would toss a restrictor plate on bullied his way to 16.9 points and 13 rebounds a game this season, the latter the second highest total in Division I. Faried was also the only player to finish in the top 10 in offensive and defensive rebounding percentage, and won both player of the year and the defensive player of the year awards in the Ohio Valley Conference. Even though he played high school basketball in Newark, N.J., Faried received no attention as a high-major prospect.

SG – Shelvin Mack, Butler -- Had Gordon Hayward remained in college and Willie Veasley been a year younger, the entire two-star team could've simply been Butler. The Bulldogs' 2008 five-man, all two-star high school class formed the backbone of last year's national runner-up squad. Three players from the '08 class were starters (Mack, point guard Ronald Nored and eventual NBA lottery pick Hayward.) The other starters were Veasley, a two-star recruit in 2006, and Matt Howard, a 2007 three-star (he presumably would've been docked to a two-star as well, had anyone been able to forsee his adventures in mustachery). Meanwhile, UCLA, the nation's top-ranked class of '08 has done much less with much more. Of the Bruins' vaunted five-man class, two left the program acrimoniously (J'Mison Morgan and Drew Gordon), one declared early for the NBA (Jrue Holiday), one developed into a good college player (Malcolm Lee) and the last is still trying to arrive in the college game (Jerime Anderson). UCLA's class has one NCAA tournament win, Butler has one Final Four.

Can Louisville Compete with Kentucky in 2011?

Jerry Meyer of Rivals.com is asked that question in his "Mailbag" feature today and he thinks U of L has a strong chance to land a top 5 class in 2011.

Meyer actually feels that Pitino and company have a solid chance to land right behind Kentucky when all is said and done in 2011.

The Cardinals already have three four-star prospects: Wayne Blackshear, Zach Price and Ryan Taylor. They also have solid chances to land Quincy Miller, Josiah Turner, Chane Behanan and Deuce Bello.

Meyer thinks that Kentucky will likely land at least one more player for 2011 as well. He mentions Anthony Wroten and Trevor Lacey as two possibilities

Here is an excerpt:

Wroten, the No. 30-ranked prospect in the Rivals150, talks a lot about Kentucky but it is tough to get a gage on how hard Kentucky is pursuing Wroten. In fact, the only head coach who was tracking Wroten late in July was Lorenzo Romar of Washington. Most believe that at the end of the day, the opportunity to stay home and play for his father’s alma mater in a fast-paced system will make Wroten a Husky.

Kentucky, however, will likely have room for another recruit. After the success of John Wall and Eric Bledsoe playing together in the backcourt, Calipari might put on the full court press to put together a backcourt of Wroten and Marquis Teague.

Another possibility for Kentucky at the shooting guard position is four-star prospect Trevor Lacey. Along with Kentucky, Memphis and Auburn are at the top of Lacey’s list.

New York Knicks May Start Without Kelenna Azubuike

Howard Beck of The New York Times N.B.A. Blog reported recently that the New York Knicks may start training camp with former Kentucky star Kelenna Azubuike on the sideline.

Azubuike is recovering from a torn patellar tendon which team president Donnie Walsh labelled as “one of the worst injuries in the league.”

Here is an excerpt of Beck's article:

Azubuike spent most of the summer rehabilitating with a private trainer. He just began working with the Knicks’ staff this week, so team officials do not yet have a firm assessment. Azubuike is not yet running or jumping, which suggests that he is a long way from playing high-level basketball.

“I think it’s 50-50 whether he’ll be ready for training camp right now,” D’Antoni said. “He thinks he will be.”

When healthy, the 26-year-old Azubuike is probably the Knicks’ top candidate to start at shooting guard, because of his athleticism, his strength and his steady 3-point stroke. At 6 feet 5 inches and 220 pounds, Azubuike is built “like a brick,” D’Antoni said, and is an above-average defender.

Calipari Mentions Nazr Mohammed as a Future Assistant

When speaking to University of Kentucky students last night, John Calipari mentioned the possibility of former Wildcat Narz Mohammed working with the basketball program in the future.

Here is an excerpt from Jerry Tipton's article:

Calipari said that Mohammed might play a few more seasons in the NBA. Then Mohammed would need one more year of academic work to get a degree.

With a degree, Mohammed would be in position to join the UK staff, Calipari said.

Northern Kentucky Adds High-Scoring Bobby Shannon

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University men’s basketball head coach Dave Bezold has added former Maryland prep standout Bobby Shannon to the 2010-11 roster.

Shannon, a 6-foot-5 wing player, led all Washington, D.C., area players in scoring during his senior year at Potomac High School. Shannon averaged 27.1 points and led his team to a share of the Prince George's 3A/2A league title and the Maryland 2A South Region postseason championship.

Shannon played at the College of Southern Maryland last season and led the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference in scoring at 23.0 points per game. He also led the Hawks in field-goal percentage (.545) and rebounds per game (6.3) last season.

“Bobby is really an explosive offense player and a great athlete who can score the ball in a variety of ways,” Bezold said. “He was one of the top high school players in the D.C. area, and a number of schools were after him four years ago. Bobby is also a great leaper, and he has a chance to really help this team immediately.”

After attending The Patterson School in Lenoir, N.C., Shannon signed with Marshall University but never played for the Thundering Herd. Other schools that recruited Shannon included Arkansas, Georgetown, Maryland, Villanova, Memphis, UTEP, George Washington and Iowa State.

Shannon is the fourth transfer to join NKU for the upcoming season. The Norse also landed Division I transfers James Cotton (Maryland Eastern Shore), Malcolm Eleby (St. Bonaventure) and Josh Tabb (Tennessee) for the 2010-11 campaign.

Shannon joins an NKU program that posted a 17-13 record last season. The Norse also advanced to the semifinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

NKU knocked off eventual regional champion Saint Joseph’s in the second round of the GLVC Tournament.

Former Racer Tony Easley Signs in Poland

Former Murray State student-athlete Tony Easley is now a professional basketball player after signing recently to play the coming season in the Polish A-league with Polina Azbud Warszawa.

“You bet, I am excited to get this opportunity,” Easley said while taking a break from a pick-up game at the Regional Special Events Center. “You never think that you’ll get the chance to play pro ball, but you always hope.”
“This is a blessing and I’m excited to start a new chapter in my life,” Easley added.

When Easley arrived at Murray State from Auburn, Ala., in 2005, he was a slight center that only needed some time to grow into a college basketball player.

“My time at Murray State means so much to me, Easley said. “Look, I was cut in the 9th grade, so to get the chance to come to MSU and have the career I’ve had, it’s amazing.”

Easley helped the Racers to a 31-5 season in 2009-10, which included their first NCAA Tournament win since 1988 over Vanderbilt and a near miss against eventual national runner-up Butler.

He hasn’t let up since the season ended, with daily workouts to increase his value as a professional.

“I’ve haven’t take much time off,” Easley said. “I was a post player for MSU, but in the pros I believe I’ll play some at small forward. Since the season ended, I’ve worked on my ball handling and perimeter shooting, because I’ll have to do that because I won’t be playing with my back to the basket as much.”

Easley played with tons of enthusiasm and was a Murray State fan favorite.

“So many people influenced me, so I owe Murray State and I’ll keep working hard, but I’m going to miss the place very much.”

When Murray State Head Coach Billy Kennedy arrived in 2006, he quickly saw Easley as a potential impact player.

“Tony has been a cornerstone for our program for four years,” Kennedy said. “He developed into a special player.”

Kennedy also enjoyed having Easley’s leadership in the Racer program.

Calipari Thinks Enes Kanter Decision is Coming Soon

Kentucky head coach John Calipari stated at a book-signing last night that he feels a decision on freshman Enes Kanter is coming soon.

Here is an excerpt from LEX18.com:

"Still going through the process," Calipari said of Kanter, who has been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse but did not travel with the team to Canada. "The process with the foreign student will take a little longer, but I think in the next couple of weeks we'll know," he said.

Calipari also discusses recruiting a bit and seemed to allude to the most recent commitment - Kyle Wiltjer. Coaches are not permitted to comment on unsigned recruits, but he did give a blanket statement:

"When young men say they want to play with other great players, that's what you want to hear."
