Former UK Star has a Point Guard Prospect for Calipari

Former Kentucky star Joe Crawford has a point guard prospect for John Calipari to check out - his younger brother Jalen.

Crawford reported on his brother's first prep school game via Twitter and added that he'd love to see the younger Crawford in blue and white.

Here are Crawford's posts on Twitter:

joecrawford5 Youngest bro @JCrawford3rd had 25pts 5ast and 5stl in his first prep school game. And yes he's a point guard.

joecrawford5 I would love for my brother 2 go 2 UK but I don't think @UKCoachCalipari has ever seen him and it has 2 be the right fit for both of them.

Patrick Patterson Joins PEAK for Office Tip Off Party

Former Kentucky star Patrick Patterson
joined PEAK for an office tip off party in its Clover City offices.

Slamonline.com talked to the former Wildcat. Here is an excerpt:

SLAM: How’d your deal with PEAK come about?

Patterson: Pretty much I talked to Nike, talked to adidas, and PEAK, because of the Houston Rockets organization. When Yao came here he brought all this Chinese media and attention here. (PEAK) seemed to care more about me. They wanted to take care of me first as a person and my family and also … in a sense of representing their organization.

I felt more comfortable with them. I just felt like that family feel. They’re easy to talk to, you can call any time you want. I can put my advice and thoughts into some apparel and they’ll listen. That’s definitely something that attracted me to them.

SLAM: Are you enjoying getting free stuff?

Patterson: (I get) free stuff from PEAK. Shoes, apparel … I just call them for whatever I want. The best thing about the NBA over college is the free stuff. Your teammate is sponsored by Jordan. ‘Yo, can I get some shoes?’ Your teammate is sponsored by Nike or adidas. ‘Yo, can I get some shoes, can I get some apparel?’ The free stuff is all over the place. There are so many people out there who are well connected and you can ask them for a favor.

My teammate Jarred Jeffries is with Jordan and I’m like, ‘Yo, can I get those Jordans?’ Because in high school that’s what you always wear, Jordans. I get the shoes that I never got. Same with Nike and adidas. Now that I’m with PEAK, I’m making calls left and right to see if I can get this shoe to wear, see if I can get these clothes. It helps them as well because if I’m wearing stuff, people are like, ‘Man, what you got on? I want that too.’

Being from Kentucky, the big blue nation’s everywhere. They see something on Kentucky players and they’ll be quick to buy it just because they love us that much and they support us.

Evansville Sinks Kentucky Wesleyan with Late Tip-In

Evansville 71
Kentucky Wesleyan 69

Exhibition Final from Evansville, Indiana

Kenny Harris tipped in a missed shot by Colt Ryan with four-tenths of a second remaining to lift Evansville past Kentucky Wesleyan 71-69 in a men's college basketball exhibition game Saturday night at Roberts Stadium in Evansville.

KWC's Anthony Young drained a 3-pointer with 30 seconds to play to tie the game at 69 and set up the final sequence.

"We missed a block out down the stretch, unfortunately, and Harris made a heck of a tip-in for them to win it," Panthers head coach Todd Lee said. "Because of injuries, we're very undermanned at the present time. Despite that, we battled hard and had a chance to beat a Division I team on the road. I'm very proud of our guys."

Wesleyan, coming off a 71-58 exhibition loss at South Carolina on Thursday, dressed only eight players, and that number dwindled to seven after reserve Marseilles Stewart suffered a shoulder injury early in the game and did not return.

KWC led 36-31 at intermission and extended its lead to six in the second half before the Purple Aces climbed back into the game with good defense and quality shooting.

KWC made just 9-of-25 shots in the second half (36 percent), while UE connected on 14-of-25 field-goal tries (56 percent).

"Their defense was very good in the second half," Lee said of Evansville. "And, we had some guys in foul trouble -- that may have affected our defense a little bit."

KWC, which won at Evansville in an exhibition game last season, got a game-best 20 points from Young, who was 6-of-9 from the floor, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range. He also made all six of his free-throw attempts.

Evansville Bosse High School graduate Cardell McFarland added 18 points and veteran guard Kwan Waller scored 14. Jay Ivey led all rebounders with 13.

The Purple Aces were led by Ryan, who scored 15 points. Kavon Lacey had 14 points and six assists, and Harris added 10 points. Denver Holmes had a game-best seven assists.

KWC finished 20-of-48 from the field for 42 percent, making 8-of-22 shots from 3-point range (36 percent). The Panthers were 21-of-26 from the foul stripe for 91 percent and outrebounded UE 38-28.

Evansville made 28-of-56 floor shots (50 percent), but just 12-of-20 foul shots (60 percent).

KWC turned the ball over 15 times, compared to just eight floor errors for the Purple Aces.

Wesleyan closes out its exhibition season at 6 p.m. Thursday at Louisville.

Mistrial Declared for Man Charged in Antoine Walker Robbery

A Cook County judge declared a mistrial for a man accused of robbing former Kentucky star Antoine Walker at gunpoint in Chicago.

Here is an excerpt from SunTimes.com:

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that jurors deliberated for seven hours before deciding they couldn’t reach an unanimous verdict for 28-year-old Demorris Hill.

Prosecutors say they plan to retry him.

Hill was one of four men charged in the 2007 robbery at Walker’s home. Two men have already been sentenced.

Walker testified Wednesday and gave his account of what happened:

“I just wanted to follow directions and keep my head down," he said.

Walker testified he was in his garage sitting in his Cadillac Escalade waiting for his assistant Tyrone Ivery to return from Niketown when three men accosted him.

Walker said the $1,500 in cash and cell phone he had on his lap fell as he got up and “listened” to the instructions the men gave him as they escorted him back inside the house with their weapons.

“They asked me who was in the house, what was upstairs,” Walker, 34, told Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Mark Shlifka.

Two of the masked gunmen asked Walker, then with the Miami Heat, to sit on the floor at the foot of his bed. Minutes later, the other gunman came up with Ivery and also ordered him on the floor, the former Mount Carmel star said, his 6-foot-9 frame jutting out from the witness chair.

Gilbert Arenas, John Wall May Be "Stuck" Together

ESPN's Marc Stein reports that John Wall and Gilbert Arenas will need to coexist in Washington and frankly, there might not be any other option in the short-term.

Arenas' contract makes it next to impossible for the Wizards to get rid of him, even if they want to.

Here is an excerpt:

On Friday night in New York, provided that the asbestos levels are livable and Arenas isn't a last-minute scratch at Madison Square Garden, Wall and Gil will play together for real for the first time, essentially because the Washington Wizards have no alternative.

As much as the Wizards would love to separate the former face of the franchise from his freshly drafted heir apparent, they can't. Not now. Not unless they paid a ridiculous amount of money -- something close to this season's $57.6 million payroll is a safe first estimate -- for Arenas to go away in a buyout.

Which is clearly not under consideration.

And yet it's been stressed to me, even if the Wizards will never admit this publicly, that breakout performances like the one Wall uncorked in Philly only increase the organization's desire to ship Arenas elsewhere. It's not because the Wizards are fearful Arenas is going to lead young Wall astray. The kid is too strong-willed for that. It's more about the Wizards doing everything they can to preserve the atmosphere around their precious commodity, giving Wall every opportunity to reach his full potential.

Bellarmine University Stuns Xavier in Exhibition

Exhibition final from Cincinnati, Ohio

CINCINNATI--The Bellarmine University men's basketball team got two free throws from senior Jeremy Kendle with 1.3 seconds remaining in the game to pull off a 63-61 upset over Division I Xavier University tonight in an exhibition game at the Cintas Center.

The Knights, ranked No. 4 in the NABC preseason poll, were a perfect 16 of 16 from the line as they erased a 10-point halftime deficit to get the victory over the Musketeers--one of only two teams in the nation to have made the Sweet 16 the past three years.

"We didn't play very well in the first half," said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. "I was disappointed because of the their lack of poise, but we addressed that halftime, and came out and did a much better job in the second half."

Coach Davenport added that perhaps the best take-away from the game was his team's lack of satisfaction from the win. "They were happy, but I know my team and they were in no way, shape or form satisfied (with their play)."

Bellarmine was led by junior Luke Sprague who collected 16 points aided by a four of five night from 3-point range. The Newburgh, Indiana native also led the Knights with six rebounds. Tu Holloway of Xavier led all scorers with 22 points.

The Musketeers outshot Bellarmine 42 percent to 37 percent, but the Knights won the battle of the boards 35-31.

Bellarmine opens regular season play on Sunday, Nov. 21 with a 2 p.m. home contest against Wayne State University.

T-Will Sends LeBron James Into the Stands...Literally

Former Louisville star Terrence Williams was matched up one-on-one in a run out with the Heat's LeBron James in yesterday's game.

Rather than give up a poster dunk, T-Will sent James into the court side seats.

Williams later said that the foul was no accident.

Here is an excerpt from NYDailyNews.com:

Then, after the game, Williams said the foul was a message - both to the Heat and his own team - for all the circus-like dunks and showboating from Miami’s superstar duo.

Read below for all the lovely back-and-forths (from separate rooms in separate interviews, of course, and edited in no chronological order):

T-Will: “At the end of the day I’m a New Jersey Nets basketball player and you have to put your foot down somehow in a basketball game. It’s nothing against LeBron, but at the end of the day I’m a basketball player. Falling in the stands is a little much. It wasn’t me trying hurt nobody. I’m trying to play basketball and make a basketball play.”

LeBron: “It didn’t send much of a message because we went on an 8-0 run after hit. Do we play New Jersey again? Just once. I’ll be ready for it.”

TWill: “I would say somebody doesn’t want to do something and you ask somebody to do it. But nobody wants to raise their hand. So I guess I raised my hand first. But whatever, I got a flagrant for it, which was a little too much.”

Lindsey Wilson Stands Toe-To-Toe with Mississippi State

Mississippi State 75
Lindsey Wilson 66

Exhibition final from Starkville, Mississippi

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- A disappointing finish ended what was a feel-good afternoon for the Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team as they traveled to Mississippi State University on Saturday afternoon for its first exhibition of the season.

After going toe-to-toe with the Southeastern Conference giant for 37 minutes, the Blue Raiders were unable to score the final three en route to a 75-66 loss.

Lindsey Wilson sophomore Kalen Kimberland scored a team-high 21 points. Junior Justin Archie added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Raiders led by as many as seven points in the opening half before a Bulldog rally cut the lead to 36-34 at the break.

Mississippi State sprinted out to a 50-41 lead following Ravern Johnson's three-pointer with 13:37 left in the game. Johnson finished with a game-high 25 points.

But the Blue Raiders refused to go away.

Lindsey Wilson began its comeback with a three-pointer by senior Jeremiah Diebler at the 11:40 mark and a Kimberland three 20 seconds later to cut the lead to 52-49.

The Blue Raiders continued their methodical climb back towards the lead with back-to-back baskets by juniors Rayshawn Alexander and Charles Baker to go ahead 62-61 lead with 6:50 left.

Kimberland would score the Blue Raiders next two baskets -- the final score breaking the eighth tie of the game -- to give LWC a 66-64 lead with 3:25 left. It would be the last Lindsey Wilson points of the game.

Mississippi State closed with 11 straight points, including 6-for-6 at the free throw line to win 75-66.

The Blue Raiders finished the game shooting just 36.7 percent (22-of-60) from the field, but committed just 10 turnovers. The Bulldogs shot 52.2 percent (24-of-46) for the game.

Lindsey Wilson concludes its exhibition season on Monday, Nov. 8, as the Blue Raiders travel to Samford University in Montgomery, Ala. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.

Rajon Rondo Hampered by Mild Case of Plantar Fasciitis

Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers has revealed that star point guard Rajon Rondo is suffering from a mild case of plantar fasciitis.

Here is an excerpt of Rivers' quotes from CelticsHub.com:

On Plans To Sit Rondo Out Friday

“Listen, this morning, Eddie told me that Rondo wasn’t playing because of his foot. And 10 minutes later, I go down so we can watch film and Rondo said, ‘I’m playing; I’m fine.’”

On Changing His Subbing Plans

““I walked over to him before the tap and told him, ‘Hey, listen, if I see anything, I’m taking you out,’ But you could see he was good. The only thing we did, and you could tell, we subbed him early, “I think with five or six minutes left in the first quarter we subbed him. And then we did it again after halftime. And, overall, that may have helped him with his wind.”
In case you're wondering, plantar fasciitis is irritation and swelling of the thick tissue on the bottom of the foot.

According to Google Health, it is one of the most common orthopedic complaints relating to the foot. It usually leads to pain in the bottom of the heel.

Adam Delph Scores 28 to Lead Asbury to Double-OT Victory

Asbury University 111
Madonna University 99 2/OT

Final from Spring Arbor, Michigan

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Adam Delph led all scorers with 28 points and Austin Flannery hit a three to send the game to overtime as Asbury defeated Madonna University in double-overtime 111-99.

The Eagles who played without last year’s leading scorer Phillip Morrison saw six players reach double-figures led by Delph. Delph was 11-of-21 from the field as Asbury improved their shooting from last week from 27% to 49% on Friday night. Delph scored 18 of his points in the first half as he and Justin Jones both fouled out.

Asbury (1-1) hit on 11-of-23 threes as two freshmen, Marquel Johnson and Flannery connected on three each. Johnson finished with 11 points, Flannery with 15. Nate Johnson and Jamal Morris were also in double digits with 15 a piece and Justin Jones added 12. Nate Johnson led the team with five assists. Jones also grabbed six rebounds and blocked three shots. Flip Crawford led the team for the second straight game in rebounds with seven off the bench.

Both teams struggled to hang on to the ball as Asbury turned it over 24 times, Madonna committed 36 turnovers. Madonna won the rebounding battle 68-37 as the Crusaders pulled down 28 offensive rebounds.

Asbury will take on the host Spring Arbor University in the second day of the Jameison-Allen Tip-off Classic today at 3:00 pm.

Travis Ford's Cowboys Dismantle Campbellsville

Oklahoma State 102
Campbellsville 38

Exhibition Final from Stillwater, Oklahoma

Campbellsville University's took a beating on the road Friday night, as Oklahoma State University dished out a 102-38 exhibition loss in Stillwater, Okla.

The Tigers were in a similar spot as last season's exhibition opener against preseason No. 4 Kentucky, scoring only 38 points offensively, but as CU head coach Keith Adkins quickly pointed out "We gave up a whole lot more."

Campbellsville was limited to less than 20 percent shooting, while Oklahoma State shot nearly 60 percent from the floor in the exhibition win, which had eight Cowboys with at least nine points.

While CU battled and competed for 35 of the 40 minutes in an 80-57 loss at Western Kentucky University on Oct. 31, Adkins said he felt his team took a step backwards in Stillwater.

"It was a great experience to play in that arena against a Big XII opponent, but obviously we expected to be a little competitive," Adkins said. "That was probably the most disappointing thing, because I feel we took a step back. We didn't compete. We didn't show a lot of toughness. We've got to exude confidence when we step out onto the floor and show a lot of toughness. We've got to be better than what we were tonight."

Report Says Clippers Place Baron Davis on Trade Block

It didn't take former Kentucky guard Eric Bledsoe long to make a positive first impression on the Los Angeles Clippers.

After Bledsoe's 12 point, 13 assists double-double, there is a report out that the Clippers have placed veteran Baron Davis on the trade block - a move that indicates a bright future for the rookie Bledsoe.

Here is an excerpt from Yahoo! Sports:

The Los Angeles Clippers are exploring whether anyone has interest in trading for point guard Baron Davis(notes). Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro recently criticized Davis’ conditioning, and the Clippers won their first game of the season – a 107-92 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder – with Davis out of lineup because of a swollen left knee. Including this season, Davis has three years and $41.8 million left on his contract.

Calipari Was Not a Fan of Dale Brown's Blue Suit

During last night's exhibition game, Dillard head coach Dale Brown, a former Kentucky Wildcat, sported a Kentucky-blue suit with a white shirt underneath.

UK head coach John Calipari was not a fan of the suit. In his postgame comments, Calipari stated:

"There are three suits that I've seen that I say, I don't know if I want to say gag me. But there's a white suit I saw. There was a gold suit that I saw, I don't know if it was yellow or gold, where the pants were too long. The guy at West Virginia wore it. Then that suit right there. Those three right there."

Calipari was likely talking about Rick Pitino's white suit and Bob Huggins' gold fashion statement.

After a laugh, he added:

"He's a great guy. A former player here, and it was so great that they walk in this building and get that kind of ovation. And it's great for his team to see that the Big Blue Nation appreciates former players and still loves them. Now they wanted to beat him, but prior to the game they gave him a great ovation, which was really neat."

Bethel College Holds Off Pikeville College

Bethel College 80
Pikeville College 77

Final from Rio Grande, Ohio

Head Coach Mike Lightfoot said before the beginning of the season that, “youth is no excuse.” That was evident Friday night as the Bethel College men’s basketball team defeated Pikeville College (NAIA D-I) 80-77 in the Giovanni Tip-Off Classic in Rio Grande, Ohio. The Bears featured seven seniors on their roster including five that started. Pikeville was just coming off a scrimmage game Monday night at Rupp Arena against the tenth ranked NCAA D-I Wildcats from the University of Kentucky.

The youthful Pilots with 12 underclassmen held their ground in the opening portion of the game going up 6-2 in the contest. Pikeville quickly answered with a run that gave them the slim 16-15 lead midway through the first half. The game was even until the Bears closed the half with an 8-2 run going up nine at intermission 43-34.

In the second half the Pilots came out and established their presence in the early going with a 9-0 run capped by a Caleb Laidig’s three pointer to tie the game at 43-43. From there neither team could expand their lead to more than four points. With Bethel down 65-64 and the Bears playing a zone defense it was freshman Ryan Benner who had the hot hand connecting on back-to-back three pointers that put the Pilots up 71-67 with 2:46 left to play. On the insinuating play Benner found senior Caleb Laidig diving to the basket for a layup that put Bethel up by five. Bethel , playing three freshmen in the final minutes of the game, was able to close it out from the free throw line.

A pair of freshmen would help lead the Pilots charge in the victory. Mishawaka High School native Ryan Benner would end the game leading Bethel with 17 points on 5 of 8 shooting from the perimeter while classmate Kyle Ritz added 16 points to go along with three assists. Senior guard Caleb Laidig had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior post player Joe Welch chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Coach Lightfoot stated, “This was a good win on the road for us. We’ve been able to dig in defensively and grind out two road games in a row. I was very proud of our bench play and how our kids responded to their veteran, athletic players. We just kept plugging away and found a way to win. It may not have been pretty at times, but we definitely persevered.”

Bethel will look to improve to 4-0 on the season by playing the host school from the University of Rio Grande on Saturday beginning at 4:00 pm.

John Calipari's Comments Following UK's Win Over Dillard

Here is a complete transcript of Kentucky head coach John Calipari's comments following last night's 122-54 victory over Dillard University:

FastScripts by ASAP Sports

Q. How close did they come to giving you the fight and the effort and all of that teamwork that you wanted?

COACH CALIPARI: DeAndre (Liggind) and Darius (Miller) were way better. Terrence Jones was off the charts compared to the last one. Brandon (Knight) is Brandon; he gives you about the same every time out. Eloy (Vargas) and Doron (Lamb) were fine. You know, they've been there.

Like I looked at Terrence, obviously, it's in there because he did it. So if you can do it once, it means you can do it. But we're not deep enough to have a couple guys not give us some.

But we shot the ball. I mean, it's kind of like you make open shots, it changes what everything looks like, and we did that today.

Happy for Jon Hood, you know. Happy how he played. Josh (Harrellson) in the first half, you know, played, which is why I started him in the second. Wasn't as good in the second as he was in the first.

But the first half, again, those guys how many minutes are they going to have to give you? I don't know. But whatever it is, it's got to be quality. It's got to be tough. It's got to be, you know -- so 28 assists. We had talked about it the last exhibition; pass the ball to each other. We even went a couple possessions when we passed it but we should have shot it, should have driven the ball.

But I'm okay. It's kind of in between where we want to be, but, there are signs. Look, folks, we shot well, so we scored a whole lot of points. We defended fairly well, rebounded fairly well, but we've got a long way to go.

We've got two really important days this weekend. It's been almost football practice. Short of us putting them in helmets and pads, that's what it's been. So we've got to do mornings of football practice, and then we'll come back in the afternoon to play basketball. That's what we'll do this weekend. Then we'll give them Monday off.

But we've got no choice. We've got to be a rougher team, a tougher team without fouling. We've got to have more pride to go after balls. Every ball has to be like, I have to get this ball. There is not an option. I've got to get it. We still don't have a team full of guys, but they're trying.

Q. What did you like best about Jones tonight?

COACH CALIPARI: He had a passion about playing. There was no coolness high school kid when it doesn't go right, they try to be cool like I don't really care. You know, this isn't really me, but you can't be that way. He even started the game a little bit that way.

But what you saw was when he got near that goal, the thing that he does, that not many in the country do at his size, his second, third and fourth jump. So go in there and do it. Just go in there and go rebound every offensive rebound. Go after it once, twice, three times. Don't accept being blocked out. Then run that court.

You saw him run and say is he that fast? Well, if he's that fast, run that fast, and these guys found him. Compared to the last game where he was crying in his soup after, this was a good one for him.

Q. When he reached back to get that ball, was that athleticism you saw right there?

COACH CALIPARI: You know, he had blocks too, ends up with six blocks, and again, understanding that we're Pikeville and Dillard, we aren't playing high school, so there are things that we're doing in this game that we're not going to do in a regular game.

Let me tell you a play that I love. I get so upset, one of our players comes down. He gets a guy ahead and instead of trying to shoot it to him, he gets a charge and it's his third foul. I went ballistic.

Well, Jon Hood comes down, Terrence (Jones) makes a steal at half court and he could have driven in and shot it himself. He give it's to Jon Hood who dunks it. Now all of a sudden Jon Hood's shoulders are back, chin is up and he's ready. So the very next play Jon Hood has the lay-up, and throws the lob to Terrence who dunks it. That's the kind of play.

The other thing I really loved was Brandon Knight going on a breakout. He could have shot it, he throw it back to Terrence, let's Terrence dunk it and gets everybody going. We're learning, we're getting better.

Again, folks, I'm dealing with all freshmen again. So we've got to do it in a hurry, but we're getting there. You saw there were some sloppy plays. We've got to play defense different than we did last year.

I talked to Jay Wright on the phone for a half hour, and got some ideas from his '96 or '97 team when he had Foy and all those guards. Remember that team he had? They went to the Elite Eight.

He and I talked about defense, and how to play with that kind of team. So there are some things I'm going to do different than I did last year. But the first thing is you've got to be tough. If you're not tough enough, doesn't matter what kind of defense you're playing. And two, you've got to rebound the ball. If you don't have a big beast, then you all have to rebound. Everything we do starts there.

Then when we're talking, we rebound, we can scramble it, switch it, we can trap a little bit. We can do some things that will scramble up the game which is in our favor. A grind-it-out game with this team, we're too young. If they grind it out with us, we're going to have problems.

So if we're to scramble though, we've got to be tough, we've got to rebound and really, really talk to each other.

Q. Talk about the differences from last year and on defense that you expect this year?

COACH CALIPARI: Well, I think we can switch a whole lot more than we did a year ago. And I think that we can also do some scrambling that I didn't want to do last year because I didn't think we needed to.

See, last year when you drove in on us, it was getting blocked. We led the nation in shot blocks or blocked shots that were right there. It was not just one guy, it was like three or four. This team's going to be different.

So now it's like, OK, in a grind-it-out game, it's going to be a little harder for us. So I think a lot more switching we should be able to do. We're all alike.

At one point we had Terrence (Jones) at 6'9", and everybody else between 6'5", and 6'7". I mean, Denny Crum used to do it. Denny Crum did the greatest job of taking you out of your offense by playing a bunch of guys.

He never liked the small guard. He liked 6'5" guards. I kind of like 6'5" guards. So now everybody could switch every position, and that's what he did. He took you out of what you wanted to do. The guy won national titles playing that way, national titles at Louisville.

Q. That blue suit Dale had on, you got plans for one of those maybe in the future?

COACH CALIPARI: There are three suit that's I've seen that I say I don't know if I want to say gag me, but there's a white suit I saw. There was a gold suit that I saw. I don't know if it was yellow or gold where the pants were too long. The guy at West Virginia wore it. Then that suit right there. Those three right there.

But, hey, look, he's a great guy. A former player here, and it was so great that they walk in this building and get that kind of ovation. And it's great for his team to see that the Big Blue Nation appreciates former players and still loves them.

Now they wanted to beat him, but prior to the game they gave him a great ovation, which was really neat.

Q. What do you maybe hope that team will do for (Jon) Hood's confidence?

COACH CALIPARI: Well, what I hope it does -- well, let me tell you what Doron did which was the greatest thing. Remember the dive at half court because I was killing this kid. Come on, you've got to pick it up and play. You're not doing what the other guys are doing. You're not playing at the level, you don't have the passion. Come on, baby, get into it. Come on, let's go.

He dives on the floor for that ball, throws it ahead, we score. The very next play he's in the corner and makes the three. When you play that aggressive, you're aggressive offensively. When you play tentative on defense and you're getting thrown into the cheerleaders and getting sparkles on your face, OK, when that stuff happens, offensively you're playing timid, too.

You can't just be timid on defense and aggressive on offense. No, be Aggressive. You're aggressive (defensively) and it makes you aggressive on offense. And, again, that is a lesson. It's just, you know, we'll go to practice, and we've got some time next week and we'll see.

I don't know if I'm going to play the small lineup or the big lineup. Probably won't know until game time what I want to do.

Got to still watch some tape on East Tennessee State. I've really watched nothing. Got to get in my mind what we'll have to do to prepare for an NCAA Tournament team, our first game with this young team. Kind of scary.

Q. On trying to get Josh Harrellson easy shots at the rim …

COACH CALIPARI: Yeah, and he was struggling. I've seen him do it, but you've got to have an effort and say I'm going to dunk the ball. I'm going to go out and get this. Not that I'm going to wait, so. But he'll be fine.

I'm just telling you, Josh (Harrellson) is in the best condition he's been in his whole life. He's playing better than he's ever played in his life, and I'm asking for a little bit more. That's what it is. I'm asking for a little bit more. He gives us a little bit more, I'm telling you.

But we need him. And Eloy (Vargas) got to make strides now. He's got to make strides. So, thanks.

Kentucky Destroys Undermanned Dillard in Exhibition

Kentucky 122
Dillard 54

Exhibition Final from Lexington, Kentucky

The Cats closed out the exhibition portion of their schedule by cruising to a 122 – 54 victory over former Wildcat Dale Brown’s Dillard Bleu Devils. The Cats were a bit sluggish out of the gates and fell behind 9 – 7 before Darius Miller sank a free throw line jumper followed by a 3 pointer to spark 13 unanswered points to push UK’s lead to 20 – 9. The Cats would not look back as they cruised to a 57 – 22 halftime lead, much to the delight of the 21,589 in attendance.

Kentucky came out red hot in the second half, connecting on 16 of their first 17 field goal attempts, including three of three on 3-pointers. The home crowd erupted at the 12:20 mark when Doron Lamb came up with a steal near midcourt, blindly flipped the ball over his head to a streaking Knight who fed Terrence Jones for a thundering dunk. Stacey Poole’s free throw with 8:15 left to play broke the century mark on UK’s side of the scoreboard and the Cats cruised to a 122 – 54 victory. The final tally of 122 points marked the most points scored since a 124 – 80 victory over TCU in 1996.

For the game, Kentucky shot 71% from the field, including a scorching 84% in the second half. The Cats were 9 of 17 from 3-point range for 52.9%. The undersized Bleu Devils were badly outrebounded by a margin of 43 – 18. All ten players on the roster scored, with seven landing in double figures. Terrence Jones led the way with 23 points, 10 rebounds, 6 blocked shots, four assists, and three steals. Brandon Knight added 20 points and six assists. Following the game, Coach Calipari noted that Jones’ play was “off the charts” compared to his play Monday night versus Pikeville. He said that Jones played with passion instead of “playing it cool” like high school kids often do when things don’t go their way initially.

On the defensive end, the Cats limited Dillard to 30.4% shooting, forced 22 turnovers, and blocked 11 shots. After the game, Coach Calipari noted that he had recently talked on the phone with Villanova coach Jay Wright about defense and was planning on doing some things differently on the defensive end compared to last year. Last year’s team, he explained, blocked more shots when opponents tried to penetrate. This year’s team will need to take a different approach. He said he planned on doing more switching since most of his team was similar in size and quickness.

The Cats will begin the regular season next Friday at 7 PM as they host East Tennessee State, a team they faced in last year’s NCAA tournament.

Game notes:

· Word was the 2012 recruit Archie Goodwin was on hand to watch the Cats roll to victory.

· The starting lineup consisted of Knight, Lamb, Liggins, Miller, and Jones. Harrellson’s strong first half play earned him a second half start in place of Lamb. Lamb was rebuked by Coach Calipari during the first half for not sharing the basketball on a fast break. Coach Cal mentioned Lamb and Vargas as two players who need to pick up their intensity.

· After the game, Josh Harrellson revealed that he has been doing extra conditioning before practice as part of his punishment for the comments he made on his Twitter account. He has 20 minutes to run 20 suicides (a type of sprint drill) and then has about 30 or 40 minutes of rest before practice starts. Harrellson laughed and said that it was the “best dumb mistake” he’s ever made because he really feels like the extra conditioning is benefiting him. He said he is in the best shape of his life – an observation that Coach Calipari also noted in his post-game comments.

· If tonight had been a regular season game, Jon Hood’s 18 points would have been a career high.

· In an effort to develop more toughness and physical play, Calipari said they have been basically having “football practice” in their first practice and then basketball in their second practice. Players have to get 3 stops in a row or they run. There is no out of bounds during the drill. He said that one day the players went crashing into a table as they competed for a loose ball during the drill. Coach Hall, who was watching practice that day, commented to Calipari, “That’s old school. We were doing that back in the ‘70’s.”

Eastern Kentucky Takes Down Alice Lloyd in Exhibition

Eastern Kentucky 75
Alice Lloyd College 60

Exhibition Final from Richmond, Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. – Junior Joshua Jones poured in 16 points to lead four Colonels in double figures as the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team defeated Alice Lloyd College, 75-60, in an exhibition game Friday night in McBrayer Arena.

Senior Spencer Perrin scored 14 points while freshman Jeff Johnson was one rebound shy of a double-double as he racked up 13 points and nine rebounds. Junior Jeff Allgood came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and finished the night with 13 points.

After shooting just 39 percent (11-of-28) from the field in the first half, the Colonels found their groove in the second half and shot 52 percent (13-of-25) to finish the night with a 45 percent (24-of-53) field goal percentage.

Will Jones paced the Eagles of Alice Lloyd with a game-high 17 points.

EKU got off to a sluggish start as Alice Lloyd connected on three of its first five three-point attempts to take a 14-5 lead with 14:09 remaining in the first half. However, a rim-rattling, backdoor alley-oop dunk by Perrin sparked a Colonel 15-4 run over the next eight minutes. Freshman Deverin Muff’s jumper with 6:07 on the clock gave the Colonels their first lead, 20-18, since it was 2-0.

The Eagles tied it, 27-27, on a three-pointer from the wing by Zack Hurt with 1:12 remaining in the half. However, the Colonels closed the half with the final four points, behind a Josh Daniel layup and a pair of free throws by senior Devin McDonald, to head into the locker room up, 31-27.

Jones hit two quick three-pointers to rally the Colonels early in the second half and a pair of free throws by McDonald gave EKU its first double digit lead of the game, 60-49, with 5:28 left in the game. Alice Lloyd cut the Colonel lead to eight, 64-56, as Daniel Combs hit a layup with 3:17 on the clock, but a three by Allgood on the ensuing possession – his third trifecta of the night – supplied the Colonels with a double digit advantage they would hold on to.

The Colonels open the regular season next weekend at the Nick Kladis Classic. First up is host Loyola Chicago on Friday, Nov. 12 at 8:30 p.m.

Kentucky Wesleyan Hangs with South Carolina in Exhibition

South Carolina 71
Kentucky Wesleyan 58

Exhibition Final from Columbia, South Carolina

The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team opened its three-game exhibition schedule Thursday, falling 71-58 to South Carolina in a contest marked by solid debuts of new players on both sides in Columbia, S.C.

The Panthers, who have been battling injuries late in the preseason, got 20 points from junior guard Cardell McFarland and 10 points and 13 boards from Marseilles Stewart.

South Carolina was led by freshman guard Bruce Ellington, who had 23 points.

KWC, which led 55-53 with 5:42 to play, outrebounded the Gamecocks 53-41.

"We still lack depth, but the guys that played battled hard and to come in here and win the battle of the boards against such a long, athletic team... it was a great effort from our guys," KWC coach Todd Lee said. "We were disappointed. We had a chance to win the game. A lot of our guys are new. They're learning. That's what this part of the season is for."

Wesleyan put four players in double figures. Senior Kwan Waller led the returnees, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine boards before fouling out in the second half.

"He went home this summer and worked on his game and his shot," Lee said. "Being with us for a year, he understands the system a lot better. It hurt us down the stretch when he fouled out."

Anthony Young, a 6-foot-7 junior out of Indianapolis, finished with 13 points for KWC.

Lee said the emphasis for the Panthers this week was rebounding and taking care of the ball.

Under the glass, KWC more than held its own against the bigger Gamecocks.

Chris Williams, who has been nursing a back injury, and Jay Ivey had seven rebounds each.

But poor shooting, especially down the stretch, and 19 turnovers, hurt KWC's victory bid, as did going without a field goal the last seven minutes of the game.

KWC shot 29 percent for the game (19-of-66) and was 3-for-26 from 3-point range for 12 percent.

McFarland led the Panthers in shooting, going 7-for-16 from the field. He also committed seven turnovers against South Carolina's aggressive, trapping defense in his first game since December.

"Cardell McFarland is a high-major guard," South Carolina coach Darrin Horn said. "There's no question about that. You have to give them credit for playing well. They did a good job on the glass, which we were not good at."

South Carolina shot 43 percent from the field (29-for-68). The Gamecocks also got 16 points from Lakeem Jackson and 14 from Sam Muldrow.

The Panthers will take on their second Division I foe in three days when they travel to face the University of Evansville at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at Roberts Stadium.

KWC won last year's meeting with the Aces, 55-52. Making it two straight, however, will mean KWC will have to play better late than it did against South Carolina.

"We had a chance to win the game in the last four or five minutes if we would have had better possessions," Lee said, "and if we had gotten a couple of stops. We just didn't take advantage of it, and the guys are disappointed with that.

"I was pleased with their effort, but with a lot of new players, we have to do a better job down the stretch."

Morehead State Overwhelms Centre College in Exhibition

Morehead State 92
Centre College 49

Exhibition Final from Morehead, Kentucky

MOREHEAD, Ky. – All five starters scored in double figures, and the Morehead State men’s basketball team only turned the ball over four times in a 92-49 exhibition win against the visiting Centre College Colonels Thursday at Johnson Arena.

Senior Kenneth Faried collected his trademark double-double with team highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds in 29 minutes of action. Junior guard Terrance Hill netted 15 points, while guard Ty Proffitt shot 5-for-8 and scored 13. Demonte Harper hit 8-of-9 free throws he attempted for 12 points, and Sam Goodman rounded out the starters’ 67 total points with 11 in 24 minutes.

The Eagles also got eight points each off the bench from newcomers Kevin Gray and Reggie Williams as each hit two three-pointers. Fellow newcomer Romaric Lasme pulled in seven rebounds.

“First off, I have a great deal of respect for coach (Greg) Mason at Centre. He has done a phenomenal job. I knew his team would come out and compete and that’s exactly what they did,” said MSU coach Donnie Tyndall.

“They are not as athletic as some of the teams we’ll play this season, so we definitely have some things to work on. With six freshmen, we have to continue to grow and develop every single day. I was proud of the fact that we only turned the ball over four times, so with a four-guard lineup I thought we did a great job of protecting the basketball tonight.”

The Eagles had only one turnover in the first 20 minutes and shot 53 percent (18-of-34) as they built a 48-28 lead. The Colonels kept it close for the first four minutes, leading 11-10 at the 16:04 mark of the first period, but an 8-0 run jump-started MSU as it pulled ahead 18-11. Centre trailed just 18-15 with 12:36 remaining, but the Eagles then went on a 22-5 spurt to build the advantage out to 20 points (40-20).

MSU shot 52 percent in the final half (16-of-31) and never saw Centre trim the lead to less than 20 points. MSU built a 42-point lead three times before the final margin reflected MSU's largest lead of the night.

No player for the Colonels reached double figures in the scoring column. Greg Ross, Jeff Mullaney, and Josh Crawford all paced the team with eight each. Centre shot only 26 percent in the second half after hitting 44 percent in the opening half and finished with a 34 percent efficiency from the floor.

The Eagles will host Mountain State in another exhibition contest on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.

Juan Pattillo Shines in WKU's Exhibition Win

Western Kentucky 84
Xavier (La.) 69

Exhibition Final from Bowling Green, Kentucky

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Juan Pattillo scored 31 points on 13-of-18 shooting as WKU finished the exhibition slate with a 84-69 win over Xavier (La.), and freshman Brandon Peters added eight assists and seven steals in 28 minutes of action Thursday night at E.A. Diddle Arena.

The Hilltoppers scored 42 points off 26 Gold Rush turnovers, and WKU had just seven turnovers of its own. In two exhibition games, WKU committed only 18 miscues.

Cliff Dixon scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Hilltoppers, and Steffphon Pettigrew was 5-for-10 from the field en route to 16 points. The Hilltoppers led 34-25 at halftime and scored 50 in the second half to take down the Gold Rush for the second-straight year in an exhibition game.

Devin Andrew led Xavier (La.) with 10 points. He also had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early 14-2 lead with Pattillo having six quick points. Xavier (La.) got back-to-back three-pointers and a layup to cut the WKU lead to one, but the Hilltoppers were able to keep the lead in the five-to-seven point range for much of the first half. With the score 30-23 in favor of WKU with 2:03 left in the half Pattillo and Pettigrew put in layups as the clock wound down, and the Hilltoppers ramped up the defense and headed to the locker room with a 34-25 halftime lead.

Much like the first half WKU came out strong in the second half, opening up with a 17-5 run to take its largest lead of the game at 23 points with 13:41 showing on the clock. Pattillo had nine of WKU's first 11 points in the second half and brought the Hilltopper faithful to its feet with a couple of rim-rattling slam dunks.

The Gold Rush answered WKU's early second-half run with an 11-0 surge of their own, and the Hilltopper lead was whittled down to 12 before Pattillo took charge again. The senior from Las Vegas, Nev., scored nine-straight points for the Hilltoppers and put the game out of reach as it headed down the stretch.

WKU shot 44.8 percent (30-for-67) from the field in the game, and Xavier (La.) was 22-of-49 (44.9%). The Gold Rush outrebounded WKU, 39-33.

The Hilltoppers return to action on Friday, November 12, as they open the 2010-11 regular season in Philadelphia, Pa., against St. Joseph's. Game time is 6:30 PM (CT).

UK Waits for Word on Kanter, Calipari Says "No High Expectations"

While Kentucky's season could hinge on the eligibility of freshman big man Enes Kanter's eligibility, head coach John Calipari says this year's team "won't be what you think."

He says there are "no high expectations" and this season he "really" means it.

Here is an excerpt from SI.com:

"We're not going to be what you think, no high expectations,'' Calipari said.

Then, pausing for a brief second for effect, he added, "this year I really mean it.''

Good luck with that.

While Calipari calls last year's freshman crop that included point guard John Wall, center DeMarcus Cousins and guard Eric Bledsoe - all now playing in the NBA - a "once in a lifetime group,'' he knows all he's done is set the bar almost impossibly high for his latest batch of budding stars.

"I hope there are lessons from last year this team looks at, but the reality of it is this is a totally different team,'' Calipari said.

One whose destiny could be determined by what happens off the court, not on it.

For all the promise surrounding freshman point guard Brandon Knight and forward Terrence Jones, Kentucky's ability to match last year's 35-3 season may rely on the eligibility of freshman Enes Kanter.

It seems that John Wall is generating quite a buzz for the Wizards. I wonder if Colin Cowherd will slam Leonsis for having fun?

Here are some recent notable Dougie dances in Wildcat world:

High Expectations for Talented Morehead State Team

Having a roster full of newcomers and high expectations is a rare thing in college basketball, but that’s exactly what Morehead State coach Donnie Tyndall faces as he enters year five at his alma mater.

That fifth year begins Thursday night with an exhibition game against Centre College. Admission to the exhibition is $9 for a general admission ticket and tip-off is at 7 p.m.

The Eagles, who were picked second in the Ohio Valley Conference preseason poll, return five players off of last year’s team and have nine new faces. But among those returnees is a core of players who have been instrumental in returning MSU to prominence within the OVC and making the Eagle program one of the most recognizable mid-majors over the past three years.

Coming off of a record-breaking season, Tyndall whose teams have improved each season he’s been at MSU, faces the daunting task of matching or bettering last year’s record number of conference wins (15) and second best overall wins (24). The top spot on Tyndall’s to do list however has more to do with postseason play. He’d like to return the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament with the intent of winning a game in the big dance.

Tyndall’s high expectations come from a quick glance at the 2010-11 MSU roster. Dominating center Kenneth Faried returns for his senior season as Tyndall’s big-time rebounder and energetic fan favorite. The reigning OVC Player of the Year and two-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year, Faried flirted with the NBA in the spring before returning to Morehead State with the intention of bringing another OVC title to MSU.

Faried’s return makes the paint a very difficult place for MSU’s opponents on both ends of the floor, but after being short a true power forward last season, Tyndall has made sure Faried won’t be alone in the post. Miami (Ohio) transfer Drew Kelly is a physical, big-bodied talent that is slated to be the starter in the four position once he completes his transfer year in residency as prescribed by the NCAA. Kelly, a 6-7, 225-pound sophomore can play the four or five position and will both compliment and substitute for Faried.

Opponent on John Wall: "Dude's a rocket"

John Wall is opening eyes around the NBA with his play to open the 2010-11 season. His game is flashy, his numbers are historical and dougie is already legendary.

Michael Lee of The Washington Post says Wall is "a rocket" who's under control.

Here is an excerpt:

"Dude's a rocket," said 76ers reserve Lou Williams, one of several Wizards opponents who have been dumbfounded by Wall's speed.

"He is a point guard," Philadelphia Coach Doug Collins said. "When I say that, a lot of guys get brought up where they say they are point guards, where really they are not. John Wall is a point guard. He's a leader and a winner. Speed. Strength. Size. He's going to be an amazing player if he stays healthy, and let's hope he does."

Wall has quickly joined some elite company. He became just the fourth player in NBA history to have at least 20 points and 10 assists in his home debut, joining Hall of Famers Isiah Thomas and Oscar Robertson and former NBA champion Norm Nixon.

And through his first three NBA games, Wall has 71 points and 31 assists, which makes him the only player besides Robertson to have at least 70 points and 30 assists through three games (Robertson had 72 and 30 as a rookie for the Cincinnati Royals in 1960-61).

Brescia Coach Joe Pechota to Lose Shoes for a Good Cause

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Brescia University (Ky.) Head Basketball Coach, Joe Pechota, will coach in his bare feet on Nov. 9 at home against Georgetown College (Ky.). The game starts at 7 p.m. at the Sportscenter.

The Barefoot for Barefeet Coaches Initiative was conceived in 2007, when IUPUI coach Ron Hunter coached a game in his barefeet to raise awareness for the plight of impoverished children who suffer needlessly from foot-borne diseases and infections due to a lack of shoes. This year, coach Pechota will join coach Hunter and over 1,000 other coaches across the country by going barefoot to raise funding to put 1,000,000 pairs of shoes on the feet of children through Samaritan’s Feet.

During the game, announcements will be made and posters at the stadium will encourage fans to donate.

Fans attending the game can text the word “shoes” to 85944 and a one-time gift of $10 will be added to their next month’s bill and an impoverished child will be given a new pair of athletic shoes.

“I think this is a tremendous opportunity for both Brescia University and the community of Owensboro to get involved with an amazing organization,” said coach Pechota. “The city of Owensboro is passionate about basketball and on Tuesday night we can take that passion to impact the lives of people in ways they never could have imagined, simply by donating money for a pair of shoes.”

Additional information is available by contacting Brescia Athletic Director, Pat Mrozowski, at 270-686-6416 or patrick.mrozowski@brescia.edu. For further details on the mission and goals of Samaritan’s Feet, please contact Samaritan’s Feet Marketing Director, Todd Melloh at 317-417-3525 or tmelloh@samaritansfeet.org.

Breaking News: Myck Kabongo Commits to Texas...Again

Myck Kabongo, a 2011 star point guard, has recommitted to the Texas Longhorns according to ESPN's Dave Telep.

Here is an excerpt:

Just five days after reconsidering his commitment to Texas and taking a brief spin around the landscape, five-star point guard Myck Kabongo decided his first decision was best and will sign with the Longhorns.

Kabongo, who's No. 9 in the ESPNU 100 and the nation's No. 2 point guard, said last weekend that he was going to look into Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Syracuse and Texas and he did talk with coaches and recruits from the various programs over the last few days. But those talks only made him realize he never should have decommitted from Texas.

"I took a quick step and I evaluated everything and quickly realized that Texas is best for me," Kabongo said in a text message to ESPN.com. "For all the reasons I've stated before in the past, there's no way I can build a relationship with (another) coach in a year like I have with Coach (Rick) Barnes and the staff at Texas and I don't want to waste the other coaches or individuals associated with the schools time knowing this."
