Brian Hamilton of the Chicago Tribune has written an excellent article about Kentucky's DeAndre Liggins.
Liggins has overcame a tough background and a disappointing freshman season under former UK head coach Billy Gillispie and is now a key player for the 2010-11 Wildcats.
Here is an excerpt:
Calipari termed Liggins' freshman season under Billy Gillispie a "debacle." Liggins spent his sophomore year as a bit player to John Wall and Co. Then out went five players to the NBA and in came a new wave of raw talent, Liggins left to find himself for a third straight year.
"I've coached a lot of players, and there are a few that I'm as proud of as though they were my children, and he's one of them," Calipari said. "He came from a tough environment, tough background. Hard for him to trust. … But he trusts me. And he has made unbelievable strides."
The 6-foot-6 junior guard indeed is trying everything. The numbers — 9.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, 23 assists, a team-best 11 steals — are not eye-popping but they are diverse.
He is big glue for Big Blue. Even though Calipari says Larry Brown calls to rave about Liggins' defensive versatility, for now, he's caulking gaps the stars leave.
"We have to play defense like he's playing it," said freshman Terrence Jones, the Wildcats' leading scorer. "Coach wants him to talk the most, be loud and everybody follow that."
