Harper's session included Josh Selby (Kansas), Jacob Pullen (Kansas State) and Norris Cole (Cleveland State).

Saturday’s sessions were the Blazers’ final workouts before Thursday’s draft. Because of travel and scheduling issues, the team was forced to break the nine players up into three sessions instead of the scheduled two.

The morning session featured wing players David Lighty of Ohio State, Jimmy Butler of Marquette and Justin Holiday of Washington.

The mid-morning session had point guards Norris Cole of Cleveland State, Josh Selby of Kansas, Jacob Pullen of Kansas State and Demonte Harper of Morehead State.

NKU Picks Up Nebraska Transfer Eshaunte Jones

Northern Kentucky University has added 6-4 guard Eshaunte Jones, a transfer from the University of Nebraska.

Here is the release from NKU:

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Northern Kentucky University men's basketball coach Dave Bezold has landed University of Nebraska transfer Eshaunte Jones for the 2011-12 season.

Jones, a 6-foot-4 guard, averaged 4.1 points per game at Nebraska last season as the Cornhuskers posted a 19-13 record. He played in 28 games and averaged 12.4 minutes per contest in 2010-11.

Jones was 27-for-80 (.338) from 3-point range last season and also averaged 1.4 rebounds per game. Two years ago as a freshman, he averaged 6.0 points per game, including a career-high 21 against Brigham Young.

Jones also made 43.5 percent of his shots from beyond the arc as a freshman. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at NKU.

“Eshaunte is a very strong player who can get to the basket, but he is also an outstanding shooter from the perimeter,” Bezold said. “He played against very good competition while at Nebraska, and we think he can really step in and be an impact player.”

2012 Star Gary Harris Says Louisville in Top 5

Gary Harris, a 6-4 shooting guard in the 2012 recruiting class, says Louisville is in his final five.

Harris named a final five of Indiana, Michigan State, Louisville, Notre Dame and Purdue.

Here is an excerpt from Jeff Borzello of CBSSports.com:

At the NBAPA camp on Thursday, Harris made it clear he’s making advancements in the process.

“Indiana, Michigan State, Louisville, Notre Dame and Purdue are coming at me the hardest,” Harris said. “That’s my top five.”

Harris, a 6-foot-4 guard from Hamilton Southeastern (Ind.), is one of the more intriguing prospects in the class of 2012. He is physical and long, which makes him tough on the defensive end and difficult to stop on the offensively. Harris is deadly with his mid-range game, and is working on getting to the basket.

Kenneth Faried Works Out for the Indiana Pacers

Former Morehead State star Kenneth Faried speaks to the media following today's Indiana Pacers' workout (video by ESPN 1070's Michael Grady):

Here is Faried talking to the media following last week's workout in Denver:

Rodney Purvis Officially Drops Kentucky and Louisville

Rodney Purvis has officially dropped both Kentucky and Louisville from his list of schools.

Jody Demling of the Courier-Journal confirmed the news on Twitter:

jdemling Louisville and Kentucky officially off Rodney Purvis list

Purvis, who just weeks ago said that Ryan Harrow's commitment to UK had no impact on his decision, said the addition of Harrow knocked Kentucky off his list. Go figure.

He said Duke, N.C. State and Missouri are his final three.

Enes Kanter is Almost Certainly a Top Four Pick

It seems pretty clear that Enes Kanter will be a top four pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.

He is working out a second time for Cleveland on Monday and his agent says he is not auditioning for the No. 4 pick (Cleveland holds picks 1 and 4).

Here is an excerpt from the Plain Dealer:

“Turkish center Enes Kanter told reporters in Minnesota that he was returning to Cleveland for a second workout on Monday, and his agent told reporters Kanter was scheduled to meet Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Agent Max Ergul also told Minnesota reporters Kanter was not ‘auditioning’ for the No. 4 pick, clearly indicating he thought his client could be taken with the No. 1 pick. Kanter worked out in Cleveland last Tuesday and worked out in Minnesota today. Derrick Williams also was scheduled to work out for the Wolves [Thursday.]“

Complete Article

If Kanter is not selected with the first pick, there is a good chance that Minnesota will take him with the second overall pick. The Turkish big man was very impressive in his workout with the Timberwolves.

According to sources close to Minnesota, the team will select wither Kanter or Arizona's Derrick Williams with the second pick. They may favor Kanter since they already have Kevin Love and Michael Beasley on the roster.

The Utah Jazz hold the third pick and are expected to take a point guard (potentially Brandon Knight). If Kanter were still on the board, there's likely no way that Cleveland would pass on him at that spot.

Jay Bilas Takes a Look at NCAA Logic

ESPN basketball analyst Jay Bilas has some interesting thoughts about the NCAA it's so-called "logic".

Here are some posts from Bilas on his Twitter account:

JayBilas News Flash: NCAA vacates Kentucky's celebration of Calipari's 500th. Kentucky must donate the big cake, balloons and confetti to charity.

JayBilas NCAA investigation of USC took five years. NCAA investigation of Ohio State took three months. More time to investigate UK's 500 win party.

JayBilas SDSU and Steve Fisher celebrated 400th win this season, too: http://t.co/lfe2ZkU . Does NCAA need to take off socks to count vacated wins?

JayBilas NCAA Logic: When a win is vacated, other team must keep the loss. UK should celebrate Calipari giving opponents 500 losses. Problem solved.

JayBilas Steve Fisher: Congrats on handing opponents 400 losses in your career! Problem solved. NCAA has no complaint; they made the illogical rule.

JayBilas Memphis 2008: 38 times the Tigers took the floor and their opponent lost. NCAA record! No team ever handed out more L's in a single season!

JayBilas USC Football 2004: Trojans took the field 13 times, and 13 times the Trojans' opponent left with a loss. Still perfect according to NCAA.

JayBilas While NCAA wastes time counting Coach Cal's wins, the most colossal waste of everyone's time and money: http://t.co/DPhX7LF . Pocket dialing.

JayBilas NCAA rule: Player that comes to your home can eat all he wants (an entire pizza!) But, Player can't eat one slice and take one slice home.

JayBilas Compliance Directors: Let's have some fun. Send me some NCAA rules that make you laugh, shake your head, or ball up in the fetal position!

UK Letter to NCAA Mentions Jerry Tipton of the Herald-Leader

There is an excerpt of a letter from Sandy Bell to the NCAA that specifically mentions Jerry Tipton of the Lexington Herald-Leader.

Here is that excerpt:

The excerpt would seem to imply that Jerry Tipton has continuously contacted the NCAA national office to ask questions about the 500 wins issue. It also states that Tipton is the only reporter in the local media who has asked UK questions regarding the 500 wins since the evening of February 26th.

Then, in a correspondance from the NCAA, it says a member (or members) of the media contacted the NCAA:

You can read the full set of letters here

Tipton wrote today that the University of Kentucky "cried uncle Thursday and admitted it made a mistake" by recognizing Calipari's 500th victory.

Here is an excerpt:

Although NCAA record-keeping had the victory as No. 458 for Calipari, Kentucky insisted it was correct in recognizing it as the 500th victory. UK’s chief compliance officer, Sandy Bell, argued that the victories indeed occurred even if subsequently vacated.

The NCAA disagreed. In a letter sent to UK president Lee Todd earlier this month, the NCAA Committee on Infractions chair asked UK to publicly admit it made a mistake. The chair also asked UK to send the wording of a statement to the Committee on Infractions for approval before being made public.

My Thoughts: I'm not going to assume that Tipton is the driving force behind the NCAA's moves regarding Calipari's wins, but I have a feeling UK fans will make plenty of assumptions.

Brandon Knight Wants To Go Against Kyrie Irving

Former Kentucky star Brandon Knight worked out for the Utah Jazz today. Afterwards, he said he picked up a good vibe during the workout and added that he would love to go head-to-head against Kyrie Irving.

Here is an excerpt from SLTrib.com:

“The guy I'm trying to work out against is Kyrie Irving,” said Knight, referring to the former Duke point guard widely expected to be taken No. 1 overall by Cleveland.

The 6-foot-3, 177-pound Knight asserted that he is a true point guard. He attended Kentucky and followed in the footsteps of NBA stars such as Derrick Rose and John Wall to learn the position. He then attempted to prove during his Jazz workout that he can excel when commanding a professional team.

“I was working with all the coaches,” Knight said. “It was pick-and-rolls, spot shots, finishing with my left hand. … Pretty much everything.”

He added: “I got a pretty good vibe. Everywhere I've been has been a pretty good connection with the team and the coaches. I felt good being in this environment.”

Either L.A. or Miami. They’re two really good teams right now, so I really enjoy playing there.

What do you do on days off?
I’m usually in my house, playing video games, spending time with friends and family, and just chilling.

Who is the greatest athlete of all-time?
Michael Jordan.

Who is your best friend in sports?

Rupp Arena is One of College Basketball's Toughest Venues

Jason King of Yahoo! Sports says Rupp Arena is one of college basketball's toughest venues.

King lists Rupp on his top 10 list with the likes of Allen Fieldhouse (Kansas), Cameron Indoor Stadium (Duke), Carrier Dome (Syracuse), Kohl Center (Wisconsin) and The Pit (New Mexico).

Here is an excerpt about Rupp Arena:

Rupp Arena, Kentucky – Nicknamed the “Cathedral of Basketball,” Rupp Arena is the largest arena in the United States built specifically for hoops. The venue’s 23,500 seats are often filled by celebrities such as Ashley Judd, which gives Wildcats’ games a “big-time” feel. Kentucky is 460-60 all-time at Rupp Arena, which was built in 1976. Historic and awe-striking as the building may be for fans, it’s not quite as intimidating for opposing players as the aforementioned arenas.

John Calipari Says Duke Will Not Play Kentucky

UK head coach John Calipari spoke to a group of about 200 people last night at the Telford YMCA in Richmond.

Calipari touched on several subjects and even managed to slide in a shot directed at Duke University.

"They will not play us," Calipari said when asked about the Blue Devils.

Source

DukeBasketballReport.com responded to Calipari's comments this morning:

We’re not privy to any negotiations, but we know that Duke and Kentucky have talked about it in the recent past and there was an interest. For whatever reason it hasn’t happened.

Here’s a reasonable guess: given the venom that still comes out of Lexington, nearly 20 years after The Shot, why would anyone from Duke wish to play there? It’s an unhealthy atmosphere which comes from the inability of Kentucky fans to deal with reality.

Nothing other than a win could come out of such a trip, and the rest would be bad, particularly if Duke did win.

And we’re guessing that Kentucky isn’t exactly fired up for a trip to Cameron either.

Or maybe Duke’s just waiting for him to win his 500th before deeming him a worthy challenger.

Kentucky, Louisville Recruits Stood Out at CP3 Camp

ESPN's Paul Biancardi has recapped the standouts at the CP3 Elite Point Guard Camp.

He focused on several players, including a handful of Kentucky and Louisville recruits.

Here are some excerpts:

Best one-on-one players

Rodney Purvis (Raleigh, N.C./ Upper Room Christian Academy)
2012, SG, 6-4, 185 pounds
He is lightning quick with a powerful burst driving to the basket. Purvis stands out as a slasher and is almost impossible to keep out of the paint. He gets wherever he wants on the court, thanks to his strong body and quick first step, and he's a highlight waiting to happen in transition. With his body, he should rebound at a more consistent pace, but if he can develop a jumper from deep, he becomes a guy who needs to be double-teamed.

Gary Harris (Indianapolis/ Hamilton Southeastern)
2012, SG, 6-4, 195 pounds
He is a scoring guard who plays the game with the kind of power, intensity and physicality that is unmatched in this class. Harris competes on every possession and is an impressive defender. Whenever he drives the basketball, he's looking to dunk but needs to develop a jumper that defenses respect and improve his point guard acumen. He is excited about Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue, Louisville, Notre Dame and Illinois.

Best Passer

L.J. Rose (Houston/ Westbury Christian)
2012, PG, 6-3, 180 pounds
Rose is a setup point guard who is always ready to give up the rock. He possesses very good length and a strong basketball IQ to lead a team, but what makes him special is his ability to play off the ball. Rose is great moving without the ball because he understands spacing, cutting and screening. However, he needs to make defenders pay when they don't check him and communicate more on the floor with his teammates and coach. Overall, he's a special player who values winning more than his individual stats. UCLA, Texas, Kentucky, Kansas, Baylor, Georgetown, Florida State, Virginia and Memphis are in the mix right now

Players to watch

Andrew White (Chester, Va./ The Miller School)
2012, SF, 6-6, 180 pounds
White has the ability to catch and shoot with range from behind the arc. His size allows him to see over the defense, and he understands how to move off the ball by cutting and screening. He has a thirst to improve and is very coachable. As a SF, he needs to be more comfortable handing the ball and develop the ability to score off the bounce and defend at the 3-point line. Utah, BYU, South Florida, George Mason, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Missouri and UConn are in the mix for White.

Kentucky Wesleyan Adds Transfer Aaron Gilstrap

Kentucky Wesleyan College has signed Aaron Gilstrap, a transfer from Trinity Valley Community College.

Here is an excerpt of the release from KWC:

OWENSBORO, Ky. (June 12, 2011) — Aaron Gilstrap, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound sophomore swingman from Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, will transfer to Kentucky Wesleyan College to play basketball, according to Panther head coach Todd Lee. He will have two years of eligibility remaining.

Gilstrap, a native of Marietta, Ga., led the Cardinals in three-pointers with 43 while averaging 9.5 points and 2.6 rebounds in helping TVCC to a 25-6 record, a No. 9 final ranking, and a conference title in 2010-11.

“Aaron is an excellent shooter that can play different positions on the floor,” Lee said. “He is a very skilled offensive player which will give us some versatility with our lineup.

"His ability to stretch the defense with his range and his ability to play multiple positions is really going to help our team. He is another piece to the puzzle, to what we feel is the best team we have had, in my time here.”

He recorded a career high of 31 points as a sophomore and shot 50 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from three-point territory and 88.0 percent from the free throw line with 17 assists, 14 steals and three blocks.

2012 Star Jarnell Stokes Has Kentucky in Top Six

Jarnell Stokes, a star recruit in the 2012 class, says Kentucky is in his top six schools.

Here is an excerpt from Stokes' recruiting journal:

To switch subjects, it’s a true blessing from God to be wanted and honestly recruiting can become an enormous amount of pressure because you don’t want to let anyone down. Getting lots of tweets from college fans shows how much you’re wanted. I haven’t narrowed my list down but I have a very strong top six. They are Arkansas, Memphis, Florida, Tennessee, UConn and Kentucky.

Campbellsville Inks Former LSU Forward Dennis Harris

Campbellsville University has signed former LSU forward Dennis Harris for the 2011-12 season.

Here is an excerpt of the release from CU:

Harris, who has already enrolled at Campbellsville, comes to the Tigers from Arkansas State University where he attended school for the spring semester. The 6-foot-11, 195-pound forward will have two seasons of eligibility remaining and is the tallest recruit in Adkins' 11 years as CU's head coach. He is also the first former SEC starter signed by Adkins and assistant coach Bryan Milburn.

"There is the obvious that comes with Dennis Harris, a guy that as a redshirt freshman was a part time starter in the SEC. That alone indicates that his talent level is very high," Adkins said. "At 6-11, he's going to surprise a lot of people with his skill set. At that height, he has the skill level of a three-man with great ball handing and shoots the ball with great range."

DeMarcus Cousins Makes Surprise Visit to FCSA Kids

Former University of Kentucky star DeMarcus Cousins made a surprise visit to First Class Sports Academy (FCSA) in District Heights, Maryland on Monday.

Here is a press release from PRLog.org:

District Heights, MD (Tuesday, June 14th, 2011) – First Class Sports Academy was excited when Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins stopped by. Yesterday First Class Sports Academy (FCSA) youth were extremely surprised when Cousins came by to speak to them, and demonstrated a few of his signature high flying dunks. In just a few short days school will end, but members of FCSA will have something to talk about all summer. Co-founder of FCSA says “it’s always great to have someone the kids look up too come in and give them some encouragement. It shows them that hard work indeed pays off.” In a demonstration drill one lucky camper was even granted the opportunity to throw Cousins an alley-oop. DeMarcus Cousins, a center for the Sacramento Kings, recently finished his first NBA season with a great start.

Speaking of encouragement just last week DTLR, Unruly Records, and 93.9 WKYS DJ QuickSilva stopped by the camp and spoke to the youth last week. He, accompanied with a camera and crew from NBC national news desk, shared the story of his success and how the work you put in today helps you to build a better tomorrow. DJ Quicksilva and his wife Ashley created “A Silva Lining,” an organization also geared toward helping youth in their community.

Buzz on Kentucky Basketball: Back in Action Edition

Just a Note: I wanted to thank everyone again for their thoughts and prayers. My dad has recovered enough that he will be transitioning into a rehabilitation facility this week. There is still a long ways to go, but his improvement truly is a blessing. I am so thankful for everyone's support and kind words.

Monday's Top 5:

- Enes Kanter will work out for the Washington Wizards on Friday. He isn't likely to be around at the sixth pick, but UK fans have to like the idea of Wall to Kanter.

- The games times were announced for the 2011 Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic; Kentucky will play a couple of Noon games.

- Josh Harrellson paid a visit to the Kentucky Children's Hospital.

- John Calipari compared Brandon Knight to legendary NBA point guard John Stockton.

- Head coach Donnie Tyndall said he is expecting somewhat of a rebuilding season at Morehead State.

On Tuesday, Get Ready For:

- I hope to stop by Centre College's team camp to check out some high school action.

Recruiting News:

- Louisville Western's Ryan Taylor has picked up an offer from Kansas. He will visit KU later this week.

The Buzz:

- Clay Moody is the new head coach at Jeffersontown High School; he will replace Jeff Morrow.

- Louisville's Peyton Siva just finished the CP3 Elite Guard Camp in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Kentucky and Louisville recruit Rodney Purvis was also at the camp.

- Kyrie Irving. Ouch.

- Terrence Jones will attend the Kevin Durant Skills Camp later this month.

- Former Kentucky big man Randolph Morris has been working out for NBA teams. Maybe he can use his experience in China to get back to the NBA.

Video of the Day (I checked out the Great American Balloon Race in Danville over the weekend):

The Wizards have a workout scheduled with Turkish big man Enes Kanter on Friday in Chicago, which is significant because Kanter’s agent, Max Ergul, has already stated that he doesn’t expect his client to be around for the sixth pick that Washington currently holds.
