More Former UK Stars Confirmed for Impact Basketball League

There are several former University of Kentucky stars who are now committed to play in the upcoming Impact Basketball League in Las Vegas.

Here is more about the league from NYTimes.com:

A swarm of Knicks, Clippers and Rockets players will soon descend on Las Vegas for two weeks of intense competition — only without coaches, contracts or the imprimatur of the N.B.A.

The jerseys will be unfamiliar, and the games fairly meaningless. But for the first time since June, N.B.A. players will be competing against N.B.A. players in something resembling an N.B.A.-caliber league.

The site will be the Impact Basketball gymnasium, about two miles from the Strip. The unofficial commissioner will be Joe Abunassar, a longtime trainer of N.B.A. players. More than 40 players, locked out of N.B.A. facilities because of a labor standoff, have committed to play. Chauncey Billups, John Wall, Zach Randolph and Stephen Jackson will be among the headliners.

Former Wildcats who have confirmed or are highly likely to play in the league include John Wall, Chuck Hayes, Eric Bledsoe and Nazr Mohammed. DeMarcus Cousins, Rajon Rondo and Tayshaun Prince have also been mentioned in various rumors.

NBA Teams: Give Jack Michael Martinez a Chance

I have been following the Dominican Republic national team closely for much of the summer leading up to the ongoing 2011 FIBA Americas Tournament.

One thing that stands out to me (and many others) is the talent of Ben Wallace "clone" Jack Michael Martinez.

Martinez is a slightly under-sized power forward in a pro wrestler's body (sound familiar?) who overwhelms the opposition with basketball I.Q. and toughness.

In fact, for my money, Martinez and former Florida star Al Horford have separated themselves as the Dominican team's top two performers. That is on a roster that also features current NBA stars Francisco Garcia and Charlie Villanueva.

It's true that Martinez is often listed in the 6-7 to 6-9 range, even though he is likely closer to 6-6. Sometimes, however, height isn't everything. Martinez more than makes up for a lack of height with a well-honed array of intangibles.

Martinez reminds me of a mixture of Wallace and former Morehead State star Kenneth Faried - both are players supposedly lack prototypical statures (according to the self-proclaimed "experts"), but somehow manage to put in a hard day's work and get the job done.

Take a look at Martinez's numbers this summer:

2011 Jenaro "Tuto" Marchand Continental Cup

- 3 games, 18.0 PPG, 11.7 REB
- Led tournament in points and rebounds
- Was 5th in assists at 2.3 APG

2011 FIBA Americas Tournament (In progress)

- 4 games, 16.3 PPG, 12.5 REB
- 4 consecutive double-doubles

vs. Cuba: 16 points, 10 rebounds
vs. Venezuela: 18 points, 14 rebounds
vs. Canada: 21 points, 16 rebounds
vs. Brazil: 10 points, 10 rebounds

I won't say that NBA teams should automatically sign Martinez to a three-year contract based on his performance in international play, but I will say this: give Jack Michael Martinez a shot. Bring him in for training camp and see what he can do - he's at least earned a chance.

Shabazz Muhammad Destroys the Summer Competition

University of Kentucky recruit Shabazz Muhammad, the top-rated player in the 2012 class, destroyed the competition this summer.

Here is a look at some of Muhammad's top plays:

Muhammad has scheduled four in-home visits, including one with Kentucky on September 13:

- September 9 UCLA

Rajon Rondo is One Heck of a Cornhole Player

Former University of Kentucky star Rajon Rondo is apparently one heck of a cornhole player.

Rondo posted on Twitter last night that he and Alhaji Mohammed teamed up to go 29-1:

Darius Songaila led the Lithuanians with 12 points and 5 rebounds.

Ersan Ilyasova scored a game-high 20 points for Turkey. Former Kentucky big man Enes Kanter had an off-day with just 5 points and 3 rebounds.

Canada Survives Late Rally, Holds Off Dominican Republic

Canada 73
Dominican Republic 72

Final from FIBA Americas Tournament

Canada held off a fierce fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Dominican Republic 73-72 at the 2011 FIBA Americas Tournament.

The Dominican Republic overcame a double-digit lead in the fourth quarter, but the Canadians nailed critical free throws to escape.

Former Louisville star Francisco nailed two 3-pointers in the final 10 seconds to make things interesting.

Andy Rautins led Canada with 15 points on 5-8 shooting from long range. Carl English added 12.

Jack Michael Martinez continued his double-double streak with 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Dominican Republic. Al Horford chipped in 17 points and 11 rebounds. Garcia scored 12, but only 6 during the first 39 minutes of action.

For the time being, the Dominican Republic sits alone on top of Group A with 5 points. They'll play Brazil tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Morehead State Collects OVC Championship Rings

The Morehead State Eagles collected their Ohio Valley Conference championship rings during tonight's MSU football game.

Here is head coach Donnie Tyndall picking up his ring (photo via fletchmsu on Twitter):

Kenneth Faried Wants To Win NBA Rookie of the Year

Former Morehead State star Kenneth Faried says he will only call his first season in the NBA a success if he wins Rookie of the Year.

Here is an excerpt of a Faried interview from Slamonline.com:

SLAM: Of all the guys you have been training with, who has really shown you the most support and encouragement?

KF: Russell Westbrook. He’s really taken me under his wing. He wants me to succeed and really likes the way I play. And I absolutely love how he plays—he’s so aggressive. He can get up and he attacks. I respect him for that.

SLAM: Why do you think there’s such a connection?

KF: It helps that we signed with the same agency. That helped working out wise. He talks to me and encourages me. And when I’m not doing good he will get on me.

SLAM: If we do have an NBA season, what will you have to do as a rookie to consider the year a success?

KF: Rookie of the Year.

SLAM: You think that’s really possible?

KF: I wouldn’t be surprised at all. I’m really a hard worker and I’m ambitious. I always have tried to reach my dreams. People told me that I wouldn’t make the NBA and now I’m a first round pick of the Denver Nuggets so they can’t say too much. I love the negativity more than the attention because it drives me to want to be better every day.

John Calipari is the Corniest Coach in College Basketball

Kelley Farms in Lexington has mapped out a giant corn maze to look like Kentucky head coach John Calipari.

The farm will open its maze and pumpkin patch to customers Sept. 23 through Oct. 29.

"We think a lot of Coach Calipari," said farm owner John Kelley in the written release. "We just want to let Coach Cal know how much he means to Kentucky and how much Kentucky appreciates having him lead our basketball team."

Calipari picked up on the news and immediately went to Twitter with questions about the size of his nose:

UKCoachCalipari Is my nose really that big? RT @kyforward: Calipari is officially the corniest coach in the country! http://gobigblue.co/142

The Ford F-150 is now the Official Truck of UK Athletics. UK announced the partnership moments ago via the following release:

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Tradition, toughness, and success come to mind when thinking of University of Kentucky Athletics. Those terms also describe the Ford F-150 Truck, America’s best selling truck for 34 consecutive years.

Ford has brought these two together as they are proud to announce their sponsorship of UK Athletics making the F-150 the Official Truck of UK Athletics. “Ford is proud to add more blue behind the Big Blue, as the official truck of UK Athletics,” said Rob Reynolds with Ford. “Ford dealers throughout the Commonwealth are excited that Kentucky Football Saturdays are now built Ford Tough.”

The new sponsorship agreement, brokered by IMG College, includes: new graphics on the Commonwealth Stadium ribbon boards, game sponsorships, marks and logo rights usage, TV, radio, print and online advertising as well as the Official Truck designation for the F-150.

“We’re thrilled that the F-150 is the official Truck of UK Athletics,” said J.P. Miller Jr, president of Paul Miller Ford in Lexington. “With 34 years of truck leadership, we’re proud to carry such outstanding inventory from Ford Motor Company.”

“UK Athletics is proud of its long-standing relationship with Ford and is pleased that the Ford F-150 is now the official truck of UK Athletics,” said Mitch Barnhart, University of Kentucky director of athletics. “Both Ford and Kentucky Athletics are best-in-class brands working hard every day to get even better. Video: A Tour of Rajon Rondo's House

Here's a look at former University of Kentucky star Rajon Rondo's house (filmed by Red Bull):

Enes Kanter Impressive in EuroBasket 2011 Debut

Former University of Kentucky big man Enes Kanter played well in his EuroBasket 2011 debut against Portugal.

In Turkey's 79-56 win, Kanter tied Hidayet Turkoglu for game-high honors with 14 points. He was 7-9 from the field and also pulled down 7 rebounds.

Here is more from Sportingnews.com:

In Turkey’s EuroBasket opener -- a 79-56 blowout over Portugal -- Kanter was a force in the middle, scoring 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting, with seven rebounds. He played 22 minutes, and all his points came in the paint. That may be reflective, in part, of Portugal’s lack of inside talent. Still, it was a good beginning for Kanter.

That performance came just days after Kanter was, again, ripped by one of his coaches with the Turkish national team. Many in the country feel that Kanter should not have left Turkey to play in the NCAA, a sentiment expressed by Turkish assistant Nihat Izic, who recently told Heinnews.com that Kanter is not ready to play in the NBA.

“Now he pays the price,” Izic said. “It’s not very easy when you do not play for two years. And now he is crying. He understood that it would be much better if he had played all year. He would be a better player and we would have more chance to use him. But still he is a young guy, a clever guy.”

Former Kentucky Star Eric Bledsoe Can Fly?

This gravity-defying photo was taken by Voice Media's Colin A.J.Murphy at the Goodman League vs. Melo League exhibition game.

Former Kentucky star Eric Bledsoe appears to be flying in the photo. As you can see in the video below, Bledsoe had actually dunked and then pulled himself up on the rim. Either way, an amazing photo and outstanding work by Murphy.

Shabazz Muhammad Talks About Kentucky Visit

Top-rated 2012 star Shabazz Muhammad talks to Coast2Coast Hoops about the Boost Mobile Elite 24 game and his visit to Kentucky:

Archie Goodwin to Visit Kansas for Alumni Game

Kansas University will host an alumni game on September 24 with former head coaches Larry Brown and Ted Owens (sound familiar).

Kentucky recruit Archie Goodwin will be in attendance at the game.

Here is an excerpt from KUSports.com:

Most of KU’s current NBA players are expected to attend — and compete. KU’s current pros are: Pierce, Cole Aldrich (Oklahoma City), Darrell Arthur (Memphis), Mario Chalmers (Miami), Nick Collison (OKC), Drew Gooden (Milwaukee), Xavier Henry (Memphis), Kirk Hinrich (Atlanta), Darnell Jackson (Sacramento), Marcus Morris (Houston), Markieff Morris (Phoenix), Brandon Rush (Indiana), Josh Selby (Memphis) and Julian Wright (Toronto).

Other KU greats such as Danny Manning, Wayne Simien and Darnell Valentine will be on hand, possibly even playing for a minute or two.

The site Phog.net has confirmed that 2012 recruit Archie Goodwin will visit KU for the alumni game:

2012 SG Archie Goodwin will make his way to Lawrence, KS in September for the ‘Legends of the Phog’ basketball game that will be played on September 24th.

Kentucky fans are obviously in an uproar over the news of the alumni game and it's similarities to the UK alumni vs. Dominican Republic game. The difference that must be noted, however, is that the Kansas alumni are playing each other while the UK alumni competed against an international team.

Dominican Republic Uses Late Rally to Defeat Venezuela

Dominican Republic 92
Venezuela 89

Final from EuroBasket 2011

For more than 30 minutes on Wednesday morning, John Calipari's Dominican Rebublic team looked destined to take a disappointing loss in their second game of the 2011 FIBA Americas Tournament.

The Dominicans then mustered up a rally and overcame a 17-point second half deficit to stun Venezuela 92-89.

The Dominican Republic took an early 11-8 lead and never led again until 85-84 late in the final quarter.

Former Florida star Al Horford led the Dominicans with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 steals. Horford opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play that seemed to the give his team the energy needed to overcome the Venezuelans. The Atlanta Hawks big man also drained two critical free throws to put the Dominicans up 92-89 with only 9 seconds remaining in the game.

Jack Michael Martinez continued his outstanding play as he tallied yet another double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. Luis Flores added 15 points. Eulis Baez chipped in 12.

Former Louisville star Francisco Garcia finished with 10 points and continued to struggle from the field.

Oscar Torres led Venezuela with 19 points. Former Maryland star Greivis Vasquez just missed a triple-double as he finished with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 9 assists.

Unfortunately, Vazquez also made a blunder at the end of the game. With Venezuela trailing by 3 points and only 4 seconds showing on the clock, Vazquez inexplicably drove to the basket and missed a wild layup. The Dominican Republic grabbed the rebound and time expired.

The Dominicans, who have likely already punched their ticket to the next round, return to action on Thursday evening against Canada.

Ricardo Ledo Cancels Thursday Announcement

Ricardo Ledo was scheduled to announce his college choice on Thursday but those plans have now changed. Ledo has postponed the Thursday press conference.

Here is an excerpt from ZagsBlog.com:

Ricky Ledo has postponed a Thursday press conference to announce his college choice, according to Adam Finkelstein and Kevin McNamara.

The 6-foot-7 Ledo was to announce for either Providence, UConn, Syracuse, Kentucky or West Virginia, with Providence presumably getting the nod.

Instead, Ledo, who committed to the Friars last Christmas Eve, will hold off for now.

“The worst thing is for him [Ledo] to rush into any decision,” Notre Dame Prep head coach Ryan Hurd told McNamara of the Providence Journal. “It’s important for Ricky to get back to campus, get a grip on where his academics and recruitment all stands, and look forward to an important year.”

It's Official: Texas A&M is Leaving the Big 12 Conference

Texas A&M University has officially announced that the school is leaving the Big 12 Conference.

The school is rumored to be joining the Southeastern Conference.

Here is the official release from A&M:

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Texas A&M University today officially notified the Big 12 Conference that the institution will submit an application to join another athletic conference. Should this application be accepted, Texas A&M will end its membership in the Big 12 Conference effective June 30, 2012.

"After much thought and consideration, and pursuant to the action of the (Texas A&M University System) Board of Regents authorizing me to take action related to Texas A&M University's athletic conference alignment, I have determined it is in the best interest of Texas A&M to make application to join another athletic conference," President R. Bowen Loftin wrote to Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe in the letter dated August 31, 2011.

"We appreciate the Big 12's willingness to engage in a dialogue to end our relationship through a mutually agreeable settlement," Loftin added. "We, too, desire that this process be as amicable and prompt as possible and result in a resolution of all outstanding issues, including mutual waivers by Texas A&M and the conference on behalf of all the remaining members."

Texas A&M has participated in intercollegiate athletics as a member of the Big 12 since the conference's founding 16 years ago. Last season, the Aggies claimed nine Big 12 championships and four national team titles, both of which were school-bests. Since joining the Big 12 prior to the 1996-97 athletic season, Texas A&M has won 55 conference championships, including 32 in the last five years.

Texas A&M finished eighth in the prestigious Director's Cup all-sport rankings a year ago, tallying its most points ever and leading all Big 12 schools. In the inaugural Capital One Cup, which rates teams' final rankings, the Aggies were the top-ranking university from the Big 12. The Aggie women finished second with five top-10 finishes, while the Aggie men finished tied for third with five top-10 finishes.

"As I have indicated throughout this process, we are seeking to generate greater visibility nationwide for Texas A&M and our championship-caliber student-athletes, as well as secure the necessary and stable financial resources to support our athletic and academic programs," Loftin said. "This is a 100-year decision that we have addressed carefully and methodically. Texas A&M is an extraordinary institution, and we look forward to what the future may hold for Aggies worldwide."

While Loftin did not specify an application timeline in his letter to the Big 12, he previously indicated that he does not intend to prolong the application process for an extended period of time.

Lengthy Interview with Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari

Here is a recent in-depth interview with Dominican Republic head coach John Calipari:

Kevin Durant Drops 59, But Melo League Gets the Win

The Melo League overcame 59 points from Kevin Durant and held off the Goodman League 149-141 in last night's exhibition at Morgan State University.

Former Kentucky stars John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins did not play for the Goodman League.

Here is a recap from ESPN.com:

With the NBA mired in a bitter labor dispute, some of the league's biggest stars descended on Morgan State University in Baltimore to play an exhibition game Tuesday night.

Kevin Durant, representing the Washington D.C.-based Goodman League, scored a game-high 59 points, but his team lost 149-141 to Carmelo Anthony's Baltimore-based Melo League squad, which included Anthony, LeBron James and Chris Paul.

Even in games that count for nothing, we can learn a thing or two and Beckley Mason has 10 thoughts from Tuesday. Story

James scored 32 and Anthony finished with 27. Paul added 16 and several jaw-dropping assists.

Durant and James went at each other for most of the game, with Durant getting past James for a baseline dunk in the first half. But James scored 13 in the third quarter, including six straight at one point, to help the Melo League team take control in front of roughly 4,000 fans at the near-capacity Hill Field House.

"I think it's great, you know, got a high school feel to it," James told ESPN's Rachel Nichols. "... KD is a great player and we're just out here having fun."

Here is former Morehead State star Kenneth Faried putting in work this summer as he prepares for the next level:

Bruce Pearl Takes Job with Grocery Store Chain

Former University of Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl has decided to give up basketball, at least temporarily, and accept a job as vice president of marketing with H.T. Hackney Co.

H.T. Hackney Co. is a wholesale grocery distributor based in Knoxville.

Here is an excerpt from GoVolsXtra.com:

"H.T. Hackney is a great company that has been doing things right for a long time," Sansom said in a statement. "I've known Bruce Pearl for years — his leadership, competitiveness and understanding of marketing is a great fit for our organization."

Pearl, who coached the Volunteers for six seasons, has two children who graduated from UT and currently work in the Knoxville area. He also has two children still in high school and his wife, Brandy, is a Sevier County native.

Pearl, 51, said the decision came down to a handful of important factors.

"I worked for 33 years — my entire coaching career — to get to a place like Knoxville," the former coach said in a statement. "This is where my family lives, this is home. We have made life-long friends here and we are very blessed to have this opportunity."

DeMarcus Cousins Says Whole NBA Might End Up in Europe

Former Kentucky star DeMarcus Cousins has confirmed that he is exploring overseas opportunities if the NBA lockout continues.

Cousins said, "pretty soon, the whole NBA might be in Europe."

Here is an excerpt from MySanAntonio.com:

So far, 30 players who ended last season on an NBA roster have agreed to open next season abroad, with that number growing weekly. So have eight members of the league’s ? June draft class, who have been unable to sign rookie contracts in the NBA for lack of a collective bargaining agreement.

Like Green, most have negotiated opt-out clauses that would free them to honor existing NBA contracts, or to sign a new one, once the labor impasse is over.

“Pretty soon, the whole NBA might be in Europe,” said Sacramento Kings forward DeMarcus Cousins, who says he’s examining overseas options as well.

That was the vision National Basketball Players Union chief Billy Hunter was hoping to sell earlier this summer, when he gave his membership blessing to pursue opportunities outside the NBA. It is also the message being sent by a powerful cadre of player agents, who can’t draw a paycheck unless their clients do.

Eric Bledsoe, Blake Griffin Work Out at UCLA

Former University of Kentucky star Eric Bledsoe played some pick-up basketball at UCLA on Monday.

Bledsoe spent some time working out with Clippers teammate Blake Griffin.

Here is an excerpt from LATimes.com:

On Monday, Mills was busy putting games together on the fly with the air of an affable maitre d', accommodating the request of the eight-player 76ers' contingent to play on the same team. ("Most of the contract guys are here," Holiday said.)

Timberwolves draft pick Derrick Williams was a late arrival, meaning that Mills was doing some last-second adjusting to the lineups. The Clippers' Eric Bledsoe was back at the UCLA games for the second time and said he planned on returning in the future. Bledsoe said he worked out a bit with Clippers teammate and rookie of the year Blake Griffin.

"A lot of ball handling," Bledsoe said. "It was good working with him. Keep the team chemistry going."

UK Could Emerge as the Front-Runner for Shabazz Muhammad

Kentucky recruit Shabazz Muhammad, the top-rated recruit in the 2012 class, gave Yahoo! Sports some comments that UK fans will love.

Here is an excerpt:

Rivals.com lists Arizona, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Memphis, Texas, Texas A&M, UCLA, Southern Cal and Muhammad’s UNLV as the top schools recruiting him. But Kentucky could emerge as the front-runner because of coach John Calipari’s track record in helping players get to the NBA. In recent years, Calipari, who was previously at Memphis, had guards Rose, Evans, Wall and Knight ready for the NBA in just one year.

“I don’t know who all I’m going to visit yet, but I’m going to be at UK’s Midnight Madness already – the rest I’m going to figure out,” Muhammad said. “I talk to John all the time about UK. Tyreke and I even talk to Derrick Rose all the time, too. I talk to them about Coach Cal and how he is. All these guys give me good information, and I’m just taking it all in like a sponge.

“You look at the guys of [Calipari’s] that have been drafted, [Nos.] 1, 2 and all over the board. Coach Cal is a great coach and he gets guys to where they want to be.”

Special Birthday Wishes for Coach Danny Adams

Today is former Magoffin County High School head coach Danny Adams' birthday. It's a special day for me as much of the hard work and dedication that goes into this site and the game of basketball comes from values learned from Coach Adams.

Adams has forgotten more about the game of basketball than I'll ever know and most anyone will agree that his teams were some of the hardest-working, most fundamentally sound opponents they ever faced. Coach had the ability to take groups of players with limited physical gifts and turn them into well-organized teams that found ways to beat more talented opponents.

As a tribute to Coach Adams, I reached out to former players, coaches and friends and asked them to send a message to Coach for his birthday. Here's a collection of favorite memories, one-liners and more:

"Yeah Nehi, we all know you are wide open...it's because you can't shoot the ball worth a @#$%!" - Coach Adams to Neil "Nehi" West (from Steve "Pup" Miller)

"All I ever hear is 'my boy's a shooter'. I tell 'em, 'oh hell yeah, we got all kinds of shooters, we just don't have any makers!'" - Coach Adams to Brandon Shepherd

"Yeah that's a helluva pass...if you are playing the National Midget Team of America!" - Coach Adams to Brandon Napier

"That damn Marcum kid was 3-4 from the three-point line in the first half. He was 7-8 in the @#$%^ JV game. Have you figured out yet that he can @#$% shoot?!?" - Coach Adams to the team during a halftime talk

"You know, I could pull a blind man out of the stands and line him properly on the free throw line and he would hit 7-10. Here you @#$%%^ are shooting less than 50%!" - Coach Adams on free throw shooting

"Brad, let me tell you something, I don't care if you can jump up there and hang from the rafters by your @#$@#$%, if you don't block out, you ain't gonna play!"
- Coach Adams to Bradley Marshall (after he gave up an offensive rebound)

"Well let's see here, Grayson you have 1 rebound...that's one more than a dead man!"
- Coach Adams to Grayson Smith (Coach looking over halftime stats)

"Well that's a million dollar move and a nickel shot!" - Coach Adams to Jason Back

"Hey look up there...you see those guys playing in the band? Well that's exactly where you are going to be sitting if your man gets one more damn rebound!" - Coach Adams to Chris Russell (after failing to box out)

"You see that glass backboard up there. I saw the damn receipts boys and I'm telling you the truth. It cost this school $750 to put that damn backboard up there. Now use it!!!" - Coach Adams to the team after witnessing a missed layup in practice

"I'm the dog and you're the tail and the tail sure as hell don't wag the dog."
- Coach Adams to the team after they failed to execute a play

"You can't make chicken salad out of chicken @#$%!" - famous Coach Adams saying

"I tell you what Blake, I don't understand how you run the floor pretty damn good. Then you get the ball and look like @#$%^ contortionist having an epileptic fit when you try to shoot a lay up!" - Coach Adams to Blake Helton after a blown layup

"You take a kid like ________ (name blanked out to protect the innocent). He can't run. Can't jump. Has no basketball talent. But he comes out here and busts his ass every single day. He puts in more than every one of you lazy @#$%!" - Coach Adams giving a motivational speech to the team

"Now boys, this Menifee bunch is damn good. They got a kid 6'5" in the post who can monkey dunk the basketball. So you better pick your practice up!". (When Menifee walked on the floor, they didn't have anyone over 5'11"). I said, "Coach, where is the big kid?" He replied, "ah hell his dad is in the Army. They just moved yesterday." - Story from Grayson Smith

"I remember one time when Coach told us that if we defeated Ashland on the road, we'd throw assistant coach David Patrick in the school's indoor swimming pool. We went out and and somehow beat and Ashland team that had to be heavily favored. We somehow managed to steal a road win. The team all sprinted out of the gym and hid behind the wall. When the coaches walked through the door you could already see the smile on Coach Adams' face. We grabbed Coach Patrick and tossed him in the swimming pool. I specifically remember him wearing a team warm up suit and a pair of high-top basketball shoes home." - One of my favorite memories

"Most of what Coach Adams said to me, you couldn't put on a web site. After I met Coach, I learned how to put several cuss words into one sentence." - Robbie Russell

"One of my best memories of Coach Adams was at Montgomery County when the entire team sat at half court waiting on the refs to come out of their dressing room so he could get the last word." - Robbie Russell

"Wait 'til you get in the NBA and you can do all that @#$%!" - Advice from Coach Adams

"Let me tell you about every one of these damn athletic teams in this tournament. They come here flying all over the place doing that high-bounce @#$%. Pump fake the ball and they'll jump out of their damn shoes and you can drive around them and put the ball in the basket!" - Coach Adams during pregame at a holiday tournament in Lexington

"Billy, it's a proven scientific law. Now understand me...there are scientists who have been paid thousands of dollars to prove this theory correct. That ball simply will not go through a human being. Now pump fake that son of a @#$% and throw a damn bounce pass!" - Coach Adams to Billy Inmon after his inbounds pass was deflected

"I'm disgusted with you guys. I put Anthony Wireman in and he hasn't played the whole damn season. He's running up and down the court like this (I can't even explain this one). He looks like he's @#$%^^ crippled! He comes in and scores 8 points and the rest of you lazy @#$% combined to score 20. - My first game back after a car wreck forced me to miss most of my junior season...gee thanks Coach (I think?)

"My nickname was "Travis, you dumb@#$!" - Travis Allen

"The big NUTS needed harvesting, and we brought out the big SQUIRRELS tonight." - Coach Adams after a big win

Alright, enough with the roast. Coach Adams, here's what we REALLY think about you:

"In my sports career, there were only a few people that not only prepared you for athletics but also life. Coach Adams truly cared about his players and taught us life lessons through hard work, adversity and integrity. Thank you Coach for everything you did for me!" - Grayson Smith (former University of Kentucky football player)

"I only got to play high school basketball my senior year. It was the highlight of my high school days. Coach challenged me daily and because of him I got the opportunity to play college basketball. Playing for Coach and getting to learn from him was an honor." - Chris Russell

"Coach Adams is one of the best coaches I have ever seen and he is a better friend. He has always been there for me and provided strong support and confidence. Thanks Coach for being such a great friend!" - Dayne Brown (Defensive Coordinator for University of Pikeville)

"Any time I have played basketball since high school and told people I was from Magoffin County, people automatically know I played for Coach Adams because I play so hard. To me that is the greatest compliment I can get." - Jason Back

"Playing against Coach Adams' teams made me a better player. Every time I played against those teams, it forced me to raise the level of my game just to have a chance to win. I also learned so much watching Coach Adams coach his players."
- Todd Tackett (former Paintsville High School star)

"He was the best coach I ever played for. He made us play hard and he loved my love of the game. He always expected the best. Coach was a fundamental stickler...you don't miss easy shots and things...listen, I think he could write a book. Coach Adams will always have my respect." - Robbie Russell

"He taught young men more abut toughness - physically and mentally - than most will ever know." - Travis Allen

"Coach Adams is notorious for great coaching and a positive outlook on life...one of the most intelligent people I have ever met and a sense of humor to match. Coach is one of the greatest basketball minds ever to come through the Bluegrass State and his accomplishments speak for themselves. A pioneer for Magoffin County Basketball, a witty outlook on life, and a truly great man! Happy Birthday Coach!" - Brandon Napier

"What I'll always remember is when he reached out to me as a freshman at Pikeville College. He is one of the toughest guys I know. When he is your friend, he's your friend for life. He's very loyal and fun to be around. He always cared about his players. If you played for Coach Adams, you were blessed." - Happy Osborne (Tennessee Tech assistant coach and longtime head coach at Georgetown College)

I'll finish up by saying that my life was heavily influenced by Coach Adams. He taught me leadership, what it means to work hard to succeed and the true meaning of teamwork. Coach will always have my appreciation and respect. You would be hard-pressed to find a coach who knows as much about the game of basketball as Danny Adams. Happy birthday Coach!

Eric Bledsoe vs. DeMarcus Cousins in Upcoming Game

It looks like former Kentucky stars will battle each other on August 30 when the Melo League battles the Goodman League for summer league bragging rights.

Former UK star DeMarcus Cousins will play for the Goodman team while Eric Bledsoe has committed to the Melo squad.

Here is an excerpt from LarryBrownSports.com:

LeBron, Melo, and Chris Paul will highlight the Melo League team while Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, DeMarcus Cousins and Brandon Jennings will represent the Goodman League team. Goodman League commissioner Miles Rawls says he plans to bring Ater Majok and Arinze Onuaku as well. Donte Greene, Gary Neal, Josh Selby, Eric Bledsoe have also committed to the Melo League team.

The game was initially scheduled to take place Sunday but was postponed until Tuesday because of Hurricane Irene. They still need to decide on a venue, but it should be a fun game. Oh yeah, and feel free to resume the “Chris Paul to the Knicks” talk. It seems like the two flirt with each other every summer.

John Wall was originally named on the roster for the Goodman team but it now looks like he is not available. Here is an update from The Washington Post:

Durant and Wizards point guard John Wall were clearly the difference at Trinity, but Rawls said Wall would not be able to team with him in Baltimore. His team will feature Durant, Jeff Green, DeMarcus Cousins and Brandon Jennings, a Los Angeles native who nearly led the Drew League to the win at Trinity. Rawls said Durant is up for the challenge.

Here are the former Cats warming up for a recent exhibition game at Rupp Arena:
