Postgame Quotes from Morehouse College Head Coach Grady Brewer

Opening statement…
“I think Kentucky has a good basketball team this year. They are young, going up against SEC competition will probably be a learning process but I think in the end they are going to be a pretty good basketball team.”

On learning something from this game …
“It’s a learning experience, every game you play is a learning experience for your kids. A lot of kids at our level think that they can play in the NBA or overseas and this shows them what they have to do to play at that level. It’s a learning experience for them and hopefully it’s a humbling experience so when we go to practice on Wednesday and get ready to play West Georgia, they will understand where they really are, the fundamentals of the game. You always talk about working on the little things and the big things will take care of themselves, boxing out, not turning the basketball over, setting solid screens, those type of things. It will be a learning experience for me, when we came here we knew what we have and when you have six All-Americans on a team and even though they are freshman, they are good and you all are fortunate to have this type of team.”

On how this game has prepared them …
“We went and played the University of Georgia on Friday and didn’t play as badly as we did tonight but again, the talent level is a lot different. I think we are going to be able to compete, if we take care of the little things and get back to the fundamentals of practice I think we are going to be able to compete and I think we are going to be pretty good in our conference when it’s all said and done.”

On Kentucky players that stood out to him …
“I think the (Anthony) Davis kid is special, and (Terrence) Jones, both those kids are special. They shot 72 percent from the field so everyone looked good tonight. I believe if my sister was playing in Kentucky blue tonight she probably would have done well.”

On how this game came about…
“Back in January, in Atlanta, we had an ESPN special with Cal, Spike Lee, and Jalen Rose. We were in Atlanta and my players were there for that and sitting in the front row. After the special Cal asked if that was my team, of course a couple of the guys graduated and aren’t here anymore, and asked to take a picture with them because he thought my team looked and acted sharp. When we were taking the picture I whispered in his ear, ‘could you give me a game up in Kentucky next year?’ Spike was there also and heard me say it so he kind of egged it on and Cal agreed to it so that’s how we got this game. I would come back, this is basketball country, if you have competitiveness in you, you want to get on this stage, this is the basketball stage.”

John Calipari Talks About Stacey Poole, Morehouse Game

Here is University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari talking about Monday's exhibition game against Morehouse (video via bluenationblog on YouTube):

Transcript from UK:

On what he hopes to see in the second game as opposed to the first …
“A better start, when I watch that tape I want to see five guys playing, in a stance, bouncing, stunting, swarming and defensive rebound attempts. I want to see them at a high level and also want to see us get balls. I also want to see us build; there was a lot in that first game in lack of execution. We didn’t run wide, we had 30 opportunities and probably half of them we ran down the middle of the lane which gave us nothing so we worked on it and worked on our toughness so we’ll see if that gets us better.”

On Michael Kidd-Gilchrist starting …
“Yeah, he is going to start. I don’t know how else we will go. It is obvious, everybody saw it, he is starting now who are you going to bring in off the bench. There was no question from anybody in the building or the nine states that watched it. Now we have to figure out what we are going to do, I may start one team at the beginning and another at the half and we’ll be able to judge how that goes.”

On Stacey Poole Jr.’s status for tomorrow …
“He’s still on our roster.”

On his defensive hopes for the game …
“(Morehouse) is bigger; they may be a little faster. Against Transy there were opportunities for them to beat us on the dribble, but they didn’t keep going, this team will keep going. We will see how we are on our on-ball defense. I’m just looking for us to get better. We’re going to play eight guys and the ninth man is Jarrod (Polson), that’s who will play. I want to see Kyle (Wiltjer) play better, I know how good he is and he didn’t play that well. I want to see Anthony (Davis) play tougher, he had eight blocks and eight rebounds but he has to be a stronger player.”

On the full-court press …
“We probably spent 15 minutes on the press before we pressed in the Transy game. Then I saw where we were with it and now I have really spent time with it, shown them the rotations and where they should be so now we should be a better pressing team than we were that game. But we are playing against a team that will probably try to beat us on the dribble so whoever is on the ball better be able to contain them somewhat. We hadn’t worked on it a whole lot, we hadn’t worked on switching defense so they made four 3s because when we switched instead of coming to together and saying switch, which we hadn’t worked on, they didn’t know what to do. We worked on switching if we choose to do that, but we’ve got a lot of stuff to work on now.”
On what he hopes to see from Kyle Wiltjer …
“I think there was some anxiety the first night, 20,000 people and knowing it is on TV and everyone is watching. I don’t think he played as well as he has been. He broke off a lot of plays which is normal, he is thinking instead of playing but I think he’ll be fine, he is really trying to do the right things.”

On Missouri coming to the SEC …
“Both Texas A&M and Missouri are NCAA tournament basketball programs. They are great schools with great fan bases and athletic departments. I said today my wife is from Missouri and my in-laws still live there so I’m happy with it.”

On his interactions with Stacey Poole, Jr. about his situation ...
“My whole thing with these kids is you want them to be able to reach their dreams here. They have to believe they can do that and we are going to let him do that. I am for the kids and if he needs some time to decide if this program is best for him then I’m fine with that. It’s a big time decision, we all love the kid, and it’s been hard; he wants to play. Great kid, though.”

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Ten of the 11 Hilltoppers who saw action scored in WKU's 73-61 exhibition win over Xavier (La.), led by four players in double-figures and Nigel Snipes' 11-point, 11-rebound performance. WKU has defeated the Gold Rush in exhibition contests three years in a row, and the Hilltoppers are now 47-4 all-time in preseason tune-ups including 16-straight wins.

Freshman Snipes had 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting and 11 rebounds, four on the offensive end, and fellow rookie Derrick Gordon led all scorers with 17 points. Gordon was 5-of-10 from the field and hit seven of his nine free throw attempts. A third freshman, T.J. Price, was also in double-figures for the Hilltoppers with 12 points. WKU forced 27 Xavier (La.) turnovers and scored 28 points off of them, and the Hilltoppers turned it over 13 times themselves. WKU shot 41.1 percent from the field in the game and held the Gold Rush to 40.0 percent shooting.

After back-to-back baskets by Kene Anyigbo and Jamal Crook for the Hilltoppers, Xavier (La.) went on an 8-0 run before WKU countered with a 5-0 sprint of its own to take a 13-8 lead with 13:03 left in the first half. After Renard Smith hit a three-pointer for the Gold Rush to give them a 16-15 lead, WKU scored 15 of the next 17 points to open up a 12-point advantage with six minutes left until halftime.

Gordon had six points in that stretch, and Price had five. In the game, 50 of WKU's 73 points were scored by freshmen.

WKU took a 41-25 lead into halftime and opened the lead up to as many as 18 points at the start of the second half. The Hilltoppers now turn their attention to their 93rd season of basketball, which begins Friday against Saint Joseph's. Tip-off is set for 7:00 at E.A. Diddle Arena. Rajon Rondo Thinks 50-50 Split is Unacceptable

Former University of Kentucky point guard Rajon Rondo doesn't believe the NBA players should agree to the league's demand for a 50-50 split of basketball related income.

Here are some of Rondo's thoughts from BostonHerald.com:

But the Celtics guard believes that his fellow players are unified in their determination not to accept ownership's offer of a 50-50 split of basketball related income (BRI). To date, the players have dropped to 52.5 percent from their 57 percent share of BRI in the last collective bargaining agreement.

"Yes, I do find that (unacceptable)," Rondo said today. "We've already gone down more than four percent from 57. That's a $400 million cutback that we've already agreed to give back. I mean, (performing) artists don't give up 50 percent of their revenues. There's no business model for what they want us to do."

Rondo: 50-50 not good enough

Miami-Middletown Surprises Campbellsville at Rio Grande

Final from Giovanni's Tipoff Classic in Rio Grande, Ohio

Game recap by CU:

RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Campbellsville University men's basketball did not have the season opener it wanted Friday, falling 83-74 to the University of Miami-Middletown (Ohio) in the Giovanni's Tipoff Classic at the University of Rio Grande.

"We didn't take the game seriously. We tried to talk to our guys about some things that Miami-Middletown did last year. That's all the information we had on them was last year's stats and results. They'd played well against some really good teams. When you approach a game the way we did, you get the result you got," CU head coach Keith Adkins said.

Miami-Middletown hit a pair of 3-pointers to start the game and never looked back for their first win of the season. The lead stretched to 44-30 at halftime and remained double figures for most of the second half. The Tigers chipped away at the deficit in the final 10 minutes, pulling within a basket, 69-67, with 3:41 remaining, but that was the closest CU was all night.

"Defensively we could not get stops when we needed to, and we fouled too much. When you get outscored by 14 at the free throw line you're going to have trouble winning," Adkins said.

Eshaunte Jones nailed a clutch three-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining and NCAA Division II Northern Kentucky University stunned West Virginia 77-74 in exhibition action on Friday night.

Northern Kentucky answered at the other end with Jones' game-winner.

Tony Rack led the way for NKU with 21 points, including an outstanding 6-7 from long range. Jones added 15 points and 4 assists. Jon VanHoose scored 12, all on three-pointers. Ethan Faulkner dished out a game-high 5 assists.

Morehead State Falls to Talented Mountain State in Exhibition

Mountain State University 84
Morehead State University 69

Exhibition Final from Morehead, Kentucky

On paper, it looked to be a difficult match up for the young Morehead State Eagles and looks were not deceiving as a talented Mountain State team soundly defeated the Eagles on Thursday night.

Featuring a lineup that included impressive size and several high-major NCAA DI transfers, Mountain State rolled to an 84-69 win over the Eagles.

Morehead State, who lost All-American Kenneth Faried to graduation, was out-rebounded 47-28 by the athletic Cougars.

After the game, Coach Donnie Tyndall said he hopes his inexperienced Eagles will learn some valuable lessons from the exhibition loss.

"They have no idea what it takes to be successful at this level," Tyndall said of his newcomers after the game. "If a game like tonight isn't a learning experience or a wake up call, I don't know what will be."

Tyndall admitted that Mountain State dominated the game and emphasized that his players must find a way to be tougher.

David Nyarsuk, a 7-1 center, controlled the paint for Mountain State. He led the way with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Kansas State transfer Devon Peterson had 16 points and 6 rebounds, despite playing only 15 minutes due to foul trouble.

Isaiah Hill added 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Cougars. Cam Miller and Mark Williams chipped in 12 points each. Miller dished out a game-high 7 assists.

Senior Terrance Hill led the way for Morehead State with 19 points on 8-22 shooting. Milton Chavis came off the bench to contribute 15 points and 5 rebounds in his MSU debut.

The Eagles threatened to cut the lead to two possessions several times in the second half but failed to get over the proverbial hunt as Mountain State made key plays and scored clutch baskets.

The Cougars shot 51.8% (29-56) from the field, compared to just 37.3% (25-67) for Morehead State.

The Eagles return to action on Wednesday with an exhibition contest against St. Catharine College.

Some Notes:

- Don't be fooled, Mountain State is a very talented NAIA team. They are preseason No. 2 in the nation and will almost certainly compete for a national championship.

- Morehead State's key weaknesses right now are inexperience and post play. The team looked like a group of players who didn't know exactly what to expect in their first games at this level. They will improve and be fine as the season plays out.

- I was impressed with the new digital scoreboards in Johnson Arena. They are visibly pleasing and a great addition to the arena:

- What I was not impressed with was the attendance. What else does the program need to do to appeal to the folks at MSU and in the community? They have been to the NCAA Tournament two of the last three seasons. Morehead State is a legitimate NCAA Division I program - get out and support the Eagles.

- I look for plenty of scoring from Terrance Hill this season. I was also impressed with the potential of Milton Chavis. Once he settled into a comfort zone, he showed the ability to put plenty of points on the board.

John Calipari Delivers National Signing Day Message

University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari has delivered a national signing day message over on CoachCal.com.

Here is an excerpt:

I want to wish everyone the best in their decisions. My coaching staff understands as well as anybody that it’s a confusing and challenging process. Kentucky is not for everybody and it isn’t the only school where you can reach your dreams. It is, however, unique.

Before we get to National Signing Day, and as players wind down their decision process, I would hope everyone – players and fans – understand that if you start hearing outlandish things, understand it’s out of desperation. Some of the stuff I’ve heard thrown out there during this recruiting process is ridiculous and crazy.

Desperate people will do and say desperate things. I want everyone to understand that we’re not desperate at Kentucky. We’re not talking about other programs.

If someone asks me about another school or another coach, it’s going to be nothing but positive because we don’t concern ourselves with other programs. What these kids see when they visit here is exactly what they get when they come to play basketball and study at the University of Kentucky.

We don’t guarantee anybody a spot or make any outlandish promises. This is a player-first program built on the foundation of helping these players reach their dreams, but the only way they get there is by working hard and taking advantage of opportunities. Nothing is given here. You earn what you deserve.

Let me leave you with this: If it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably too good to be true. If it sounds too outrageous to be true, it’s probably too outrageous to be true.

Maze Stallworth Drafted by the Tulsa 66ers

Former Morehead State University star Maze Stallworth was taken by the Tulsa 66ers in last night's NBA Development League Draft.

Stallworth, a good friend of mine, obviously shot up the draft board after his gold medal run with the AllKyHoops.com team at the 2011 Bluegrass State Games.

All kidding aside, congrats Maze and good luck!

Here is a release from MSU:

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Former Morehead State men's basketball star Maze Stallworth was selected in the seventh round of the NBA D-League Draft on Thursday by the Tulsa 66ers.

Stallworth, the career leader in three-pointers made at Morehead State, was taken as the 107th overall pick and the 11th choice of the seventh round. He was one of 10 players chosen by the 66ers.

"I am very happy for Maze," said MSU coach Donnie Tyndall, who made Stallworth his first signed recruit in 2006 in his second year at MSU. "I certainly wish him the best and hope everything goes well for him as he embarks on his professional career."

Stallworth finished his MSU career more than 1,000 points and hit a school-record 283 three-pointers. He also holds the school single season mark for treys. He helped guide the 2008-09 Eagle team to its first OVC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament berth in 25 years.

The 66ers are an affiliate of the Oklahoma City Thunder. They begin training camp on Nov. 12 and tip off their 48-game 2011-12 schedule on Nov. 25 at the Idaho Stampede.

The NBA D-League is the official developmental league of the National Basketball Association. The 16-team league has teams stretching from Los Angeles to Maine. Jamaal Tinsley of Iowa State was the first overall choice in the 2011 draft.

Former University of South Dakota standout Nate Tibbetts is the head coach of the 66ers. In his first season in 2009-10, he led the 66ers to the D-League Finals.

Short-Handed Louisville Holds Off Bellarmine in Exhibition

Exhibition final from Louisville, Kentucky

Game recap by Louisville:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Redshirt junior Jared Swopshire and freshman Chane Behanan had 14 points and nine rebounds each, lifting the No. 9 Louisville men's basketball team to a 62-54 exhibition victory over reigning Division II champion Bellarmine on Thursday night at the KFC Yum! Center.

The Cardinals have high expectations, but are trying to overcome injuries to freshman Wayne Blackshear and junior Peyton Siva.

Bellarmine's veteran lineup, which returned more than 70 percent of its scoring, is a favorite in Division II again this season.

Louisville went on a 9-0 run early in the second half to take a 43-32 lead with 14:20 left. The Knights whittled it down and Jeremy Kendle's second 3-pointer made it 52-49 with 5:46 to play, but they never got any closer.

With just a 1-of-13 performance from beyond the arc, the Cardinals made good use of interior scoring, registering 40 of their 62 points in the paint.

Bellarmine, which is less than 5 miles from Louisville's campus, is 0-12 against the Cardinals (0-4 in exhibition contests).

"I thought it was really good experience for us to play against five perimeter guys. They are about as difficult a team to guard because of their cutting and passing skills and are as good as you'll find in the country. It was great for us because it takes good communication. It takes bigs having to guard small guys. We were able to make a lot of good offensive plays down the stretch with the game on the line. I was worried about this game, to tell you the truth. I know you think it is just a Division II team but I knew their style of play would give us major problems. Gorgui (Dieng) was going to have to come away. Chane (Behanan) has struggled with coming away and guard the perimeter. (Jared) Swopshire and Russ (Smith) gave us a big lift on offense. Defensively, he (Russ) hurt us a little bit because he lost sight of the ball quite a bit. But both of them gave us a big lift."

Exhibition final from Columbia, South Carolina

Game recap by KWC:

Kentucky Wesleyan College had a good first half at South Carolina, but the Gamecocks turned it up in the second 20 minutes.

The Gamecocks went on a big run starting at the end of the first half, and extended it into the first 10 minutes of the second on the way to a 69-59 win at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C.

“We didn't do a good job against their zone in the second half,” KWC coach Todd Lee said. “We hadn't worked on that, and that's the coach's fault.”

The Panthers held a lead late in the first half, 32-26, with 1:04 left. South Carolina finished the half with a 7-0 run, capped off by a contested 3-pointer by Malik Cooke at the horn, giving South Carolina a 33-32 advantage.

Cooke had 11 points for South Carolina. Freshman Anthony Gill led the Gamecocks with 14 points.

When the teams came out of the locker room for the second half, it turned into a South Carolina show.

The Gamecocks' defense picked up, contributing to KWC going scoreless over the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half.

Meanwhile, the Gamecocks found the shooting range. They went on a 22-6 run over the first eight minutes of the second half to take control.

South Carolina scorched the nets for 54 percent shooting from the floor, hitting 12-of-22 in the second half.

The Gamecocks were also good from long range, hitting 4-of-6 on 3-pointers in the second half.

Samardo Samuels Talks NBA Lockout and More

Former Louisville big man Samardo Samuels has lost $30,000 in salary during the last two weeks of the NBA lockout.

He is currently back in Louisville taking classes and working out.

Robert Bailey of The Gleaner in Jamaica recently spoke with Samuels about the lockout and more. Here is an excerpt:

"Playing basketball is my job and so I have to stay focused on my job," Samuels continued. "The lockout is a strike and so I have to stay focused because I still go to practice and workout and I am still doing my daily routine, and I also get more time to spend with my family."

Samuels, who left college for the NBA as a sophomore, is now back at Louisville University, where he is currently completing his bachelor's degree in communication studies.

"I am pretty close to finishing it because I think I have about three semesters to go. I took one class already and I got like a B in it," said Samuels.

"I have also been working out with the Louisville players and coaching staff here and they have been helpful to me," he said. "Coach Rick Patino has been helping me in getting access to the gym and the weight rooms and so they make my life a bit easier."

Pitino: Cards Only Have Seven Guys Who Can Play Right Now

Louisville head coach Rick Pitino says the Cardinals "only have seven guys who can play right now" as they prepare to host the Bellarmine Knights tonight at the KFC Yum! Center.

Pitino says the Cards will not be able to press as they normally would and will be greatly limited in what they can do against the defending NCAA Division II national champs.

Here is an excerpt:

“We have no choice; we only have seven guys who can play right now,” Pitino said. “We have to play good position defense. There’ll be no full-court pressure that’s for sure.”

A truly optimistic view would be that the Cards can now emphasize their half-court defensive sets. Bellarmine, the defending NCAA Division II champions, will test U of L in ways that Pikeville could not last week.

Pitino even said he likely won’t get to play freshman center Zach Price a lot because of their motion and cutting.

“They’ve got five guys on the perimeter, they don’t have a low-post game, they just pass, ball fake and cut,” Pitino said. “We’ll give him a shot, but I don’t think it’s too much his type of game.”

Enes Kanter Talks NBA Basketball, Future in Pro Wrestling

Former University of Kentucky big man Enes Kanter was interviewed recently by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Kanter gave some comments on the NBA, the Utah Jazz, Ricky Rubio and the possibility of a future career as a professional wrestler.

Here is an excerpt:

Which NBA player's given him the best advice: I played with Tyson Chandler and Danny Granger, they helped me a lot. … They just said to 'Go to the basket, go to the basket. Shoot the ball.' When we played — I played with Tyson Chandler, Danny Granger and Ricky Rubio — they all say the same thing. Just go to the basket, no one can stop you, you're too strong.

Confidence level now compared to when he was drafted by Jazz: EuroBasket was very special to me because I finally get to play basketball, play some games. EuroBasket I played with Marc Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki, couple other real good players. I saw where I'm at compared to other players. So I'm just going to work hard right now. Right now I feel more confident because I play European basketball and then in L.A. Right now, I'm going to play in Utah with all the other players. I'm feeling so much better.

Taking in the W.W.E. while living in the United States: Yeah, I've been to wrestling three or four times. … Not on TV, I was actually in the place. … It was great. I'm a huge W.W.E. fan. You know my favorite is Undertaker. It was just great. Maybe, I was just thinking, after my basketball career I can be a pro wrestler. … I saw one in Chicago and the other was in Cincinnati or something.

4. Three defenders and no time on the clock? No problem. Drake saw the play coming. It defended it perfectly. It still didn't matter.

The Bulldogs -- ranked No. 14 in the nation and seeded No. 5 in the first round of the 2008 NCAA tournament -- had just overcome a 16-point deficit in the final eight minutes of regulation when their forward, Jonathan Cox, made two free throws to give them a 99-98 lead.

The inbounds play came from the baseline. Ty Rogers, Western Kentucky's best shooter, took the ball out of bounds. He would have to get up the floor in a hurry to catch and shoot in time, but the Hilltoppers would try to find him; Drake had to be sure of that. When guard Tyrone Brazelton caught the ball and raced (much like Drew Nicholas before him) across the floor to the right side of the 3-point arc, Rogers had indeed caught up, but Drake saw the play the whole way. Brazelton handed the ball off, and three Drake defenders stood in a two-foot radius of Rogers -- close enough to challenge the shot, but not so close as to risk a foul.

The impressive read didn't make a difference. Rogers caught the ball and launched a 26-foot 3-pointer with three defenders in his face, one of the most thrilling and unlikely buzzer-beaters in NCAA tournament history.

John Calipari Says Kentucky Has "A Ways to Go"

Here is University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari talking about last night's exhibition win over Transylvania:

Transcript via UK:

Q. What did you get out of tonight?

COACH CALIPARI: We have a long way to go. I think everyone knows it. We've got a couple guys that play with great intensity. They're going to have to spend a lot of time on the court. That's just how it is. Mad, sad, happy, unhappy, they're going to have to be on the floor a lot because they have that intensity you need to win.

The good news is everybody in this building saw it, anybody that watched it on TV saw it. They also see we're not tough enough. First half, we couldn't post up. We couldn't go in the post and hold a position.

Again, Coach (Brian) Lane, I told those guys after, ‘Brian, you should be proud of them.’ They didn't back away. They started that game, made shots, played with unbelievable emotion, played harder than us, got every loose ball, took charges, did everything they had to do to stay in the game. Here we are with a big height advantage. I think probably five of our first six shots were 3s.

Am I missing something here? But that's what happens when you have a lot of young guys or guys that aren't playing with that fire that you got to play with. They'll settle.

Why you settle for 3s? It's easier. Go in there and get pushed and shoved and grabbed and hit? Stay right out here and shoot this. I hope it goes. If it doesn't, I'm good.

We got a ways to go. Marquis Teague played a good game for a point guard first time out. Showed some good poise. Missed some shots. But that's not what he's going to be doing for us. What he's going to be doing is nine assists, two turns, in a game where he played a lot of minutes and we were flying up and down the court.

I thought we were in shape until we played this thing. We didn't look like we were in very good shape, so we got a lot of work to do there. Defense, we didn't talk. Like I said, there are 60 teams right now, maybe more, that we could not beat if we had to play today. Thank goodness we got another couple weeks before we got to play another game, a real game.

Q. How about Anthony Davis and the way he could contest and block 3 point shots? How is his ankle?

COACH CALIPARI: He's cramped up. It wasn't his ankle. He got cramps because he's not used to running that hard. That's why I was laughing when we carried him off.

He's good. But physically, you know, we got to figure out how we play him, where we put him where he can have success. Just throwing him in the post, say, ‘Here, post up, Shaq.’ That's not who he is. I mean, he couldn't do it today.

Made one play where he went back to his left hand. It looked pretty good. There were others he couldn't get the shot off. The guy was 6'5", 6'4" guarding him.
We have to figure out how to use him. When you end up with a game with eight blocks, pretty good stuff. We only had eight turnovers. They played the way they had to play. They sagged. They're not going to spread out. They're going to sag. Guess what? They're not the only team that's going to play us that way. There's going to be a lot of teams playing us that way.

Q. What do you think Michael Kidd-Gilchrist gave you?

COACH CALIPARI: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist? Obviously, you watched the game. He was the difference in what happened. He did what I knew he would do. I would say, looking at today, he's a starter because you have to have him start the game. Can't start the game like we did today. That's what I would say.

I'll watch the tape and watch the game.

But I think he solidified one spot with great intensity and fire, which is what we were looking for. He goes for 19 (points), seven rebounds, five assists, 9-for-12 from the floor in 25 minutes. I took him out in the first half because he had two fouls. I want those guys to know, ‘You got two (fouls), I'm not going to play you.’ Then because I wanted him to get more minutes, I put him for about four or five minutes with two fouls. Normally, I wouldn't do that.

Q. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist gave you a big spark off the bench. Why not use him in that sense?

COACH CALIPARI: Because you can't start a game down. We should be a good starting team. Then you go to your bench. We should be able to get another boost because those guys should be going against a second line player from another team who isn't as good as they are or a player from another team that's a little tired after four or five minutes.

Again, I don't know who our starting five will be. But I would guess after today Michael will be one of them.

Q. How pleased were you with the way Darius (Miller) played? When Darius came in, he played inspired ball.

COACH CALIPARI: Yeah, he did. He played good. I thought Doron (Lamb) played good.

Again, I got to watch the tape. We just have to be a better team together. We have to play off of one another. We can't worry about where I'm playing.

I think we thought we were going to win by a hundred. I was so happy the game was close. I was so happy the start was what it was. Then when we started separating, they came back and tied it up again. I was loving it. It's a teaching tool. It's a chance for me to talk to them about, you know, look, they're a good team, but they're Division III, but they're a good team. But c'mon, think about where we are as a team right now.

That's basically what I said to them after.

Q. What did you think defensively from your guys?

COACH CALIPARI: I'm going to have to watch the tape and really see.

Because we had so many blocks, it kind of covers some of the breakdowns. I do know this: we switched, which I do want to do with this team because we got a lot of guys that look the same. But we didn't switch the right way.

Now, I cannot blame them because we haven't worked on it much, so... If we're going to switch and do those things, we're going to have to work on it.

Q. Did you see anything about how you were playing that was a little bit alarming to you or is this exactly where you knew they were?
COACH CALIPARI: It's always alarming to me. I'm an alarmist.

We got a lot of work to do. I wish it was easy. Just put a group of guys together, a bunch of freshmen, you throw them together and they just play. That's not how it works. Got a lot of work to do. Got a lot of work to do defensively, conditioning, toughness, execution, understanding you can't settle. It's Nov. 2. I've had them for two weeks. Think about that. Had 'em for two weeks.

Still like my team. But I got a lot of work to do. I thought it was going to be easy. It's not going to be easy. It's going to be hard.

Q. What can you tell us about Stacey Poole, whatever his situation is?

COACH CALIPARI: We don't have any roster changes, so there's nothing to talk about right now, so... All right. Thanks, folks.

Kentucky Struggles, Eventually Pulls Away from Transylvania

University of Kentucky 97
Transylvania University 53

Exhibition Final from Lexington, Kentucky

The Kentucky Wildcats did not play well, particularly in the first half, but still managed to roll 97-53 in an exhibition game against crosstown Division III foe Transylvania University.

"We have a long ways to go," Kentucky head coach John Calipari said after that game.

Transylvania took an early 11-4 lead before falling behind 37-23 at the half. A more focused Kentucky team overwhelmed the smaller Pioneers in the second half.

Terrence Jones led the way for Kentucky with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Doron Lamb and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist added 19 points each.

Calipari praised Kidd-Gilchrist after the game, adding that he likely locked down a starting spot with his "intensity and fire."

Marquis Teague just missed a double-double with 14 points and 9 assists for the Wildcats. Anthony Davis struggled offensively but finished with 8 rebounds and 8 blocked shots.

Tate Cox led Transy with 15 points. Barrett Meyer added 13 and Ethan Spurlin chipped in 12.

Kentucky returns to action on Monday when they host Morehouse College for an exhibition game.

Notes:

- Stacey Poole did not play and was not with the team tonight. His future at UK is in doubt.

- Kentucky did not play well. The Wildcats look very much like a young team in early November.

- The bigger, more athletic Wildcats out-rebounded Transy 45-27.

- Anthony Davis and Kyle Wiltjer were weak with the ball in tonight's game. Davis was stripped several times and both players struggled to establish offensive position against the smaller Pioneers.

EKU Takes Care of Urbana in Exhibition Contest

Eastern Kentucky 70
Urbana 59

Exhibition final from Richmond, Kentucky

Game recap by EKU:

RICHMOND, Ky. – Junior Mike DiNunno and freshman Eric Stutz scored 14 points apiece to lead four Colonels in double figures as the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team defeated Division II foe Urbana, 70-59, Wednesday night in McBrayer Arena. This was the Colonels’ only exhibition game of the preseason.

DiNunno directed the team from the point guard position for most of the night and flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 14 points, eight assists and eight rebounds. Stutz scored 10 of his 14 points in a strong first-half performance.

Senior Jaron Jones (12 points) and freshman Timmy Knipp (10 points) also contributed in the winning effort.

The Colonel defense stifled Urbana all night, holding the Blue Knights to just 37.3 percent (22-of-59) shooting from the field. Sharif Muhammed led Urbana with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Ramel Mitchell chipped in with 12 points.

A pair of freshmen, Stutz and Knipp, scored EKU’s first 12 points of the game, as back-to-back three-pointers by Knipp gave the Colonels an early 12-5 lead at the first media timeout. Free throws by Jaron Jones, a jumper by senior Joshua Jones and a layup by DiNunno extended EKU’s lead to 18-5 in just a two-minute span.

A three-pointer by Josh Brown brought Urbana to within six, 20-14, with 7:29 remaining in the first half, but a late run by EKU, capped by a DiNunno jumper with less than two minutes on the clock, sent the Colonels into the locker room at halftime up by 14, 37-23.

Asbury Falls to Wilberforce on Opening Night

Wilberforce University 79
Asbury University 68

Final from Wilmore, Kentucky

Game recap by Asbury University:

WILMORE, Ky. – A second-half comeback was not in the cards for the Eagles as the men dropped their season opener for the fifth consecutive year, 79-68 to Wilberforce University (Ohio). The Eagles have dropped four straight home openers as well.

The game swayed back and forth much of the first half, with six ties and eight lead changes. The Eagles (0-1) would lead for a total of 10:54 in the first half, but would never lead in the second. Asbury would tie the game out of the half at 36-36, but the Bulldogs would take the lead back on a jumper by Ronald Hightower just 18 seconds later, and would never surrender it back.

Wilberforce’s Darius Foster and Chris Olafioye proved to be forces against the Eagles, scoring 21 and 18 points respectively. Foster knocked down 3-of-7 from three-point range and nine-of-19 from the floor. Olafioye connected on seven-of-13 from the floor and hit on four-of-five from the free throw line.

The Eagles could not get it going on the inside on the night, despite starting forwards Dakotah Euton and Justin Jones scoring 13 and 12 points. The duo combined to shoot 10-of-26 from the floor. Euton was three-of-six from long range but Asbury scored only 16 points in the paint, Wilberforce scored 34. Jones would also grab a game-high 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season, he had six last year and now has 10 in his career.
