Pikeville Lands Jamar "Deuce" Briscoe, Nation's Top NAIA Recruit

Kelly Wells and the UPIKE Bears have had their share of success over the last several seasons. Success that includes winning the 2011 Buffalo Funds NAIA National Championship, and Wells being named 2011 NAIA National Coach of the Year. The Bears newest addition, Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe, will look to help Wells and UPIKE continue that success. Briscoe, a 2009 NCAA Division I Freshman All American selection, made it official Friday morning.

Briscoe, who was tabbed as one of the top 20 NCAA Division I transfers in the nation in 2012, comes to the University of Pikeville after stellar seasons at North Carolina Central and Charlotte, both NCAA Division I institutions. Briscoe, a 1,000-point scorer at the NCAA Division I level, brings a ton of experience and several impressive accolades along with him to UPIKE.

“When you have the opportunity to bring in a player with the personality off the court, as well as the ability to play the game of basketball like (Deuce) has, it’s a no brainer,” said Wells.

“We are very excited about the way things are shaping up for our team this season.”

While at North Carolina Central, Briscoe ranked second in the nation among all NCAA Division I freshman in points per game (17.8), trailing only former Liberty and current Duke star Seth Curry. The 5’10 combo guard out of Baltimore, Md., also added 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals per game.

Other accolades Briscoe collected while at NCCU include CollegeInsider.com NCAA DI Mid Major Freshman All American, NCAA DI Independent Second Team All American, First Team All BASN Black College Men’s Division I All American, Second Team CollegeHoops.net High-Major All Freshman Team and NCAA DI Independent Newcomer of the Year honors.

Briscoe also has posted notable high scoring career efforts against opponents such as North Carolina State (28), Wake Forest (18), Kansas State (18) Arkansas (24), South Carolina (19) Duquesne (34), Chicago State (32), Longwood (37), and Gardener Webb (30).

Upon transferring from NCCU to Charlotte, Briscoe picked up right where he left off on the hardwood. During his first season for the 49ers, Briscoe averaged 12.5 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game while starting 28 of 29 games and being named Atlantic 10 Newcomer of the Year. As a sophomore, Briscoe posted five games of 20 or more points. An added highlight was a 14-point, 5 rebound, 4-assist effort in a win over No. 7 ranked Tennessee.

Despite a coaching change at Charlotte that led to a change of position as a junior, Briscoe still managed a ton of individual success. Briscoe started 11 of 30 games and managed averages of 7.3 points and 2.1 rebounds per contest. Briscoe had 11 double figure outings while leading the 49ers in scoring three times during the 2011-2012 season.

“The thing that stands out most about Deuce is his character. Through all the successes that he has had on the court at the NCAA Division I level, he has maintained a great GPA and has had no off-court issues. He will be a big plus for UPIKE on the court and in the community as well,” said Wells.

As a prep, Briscoe attended Cardinal Gibbons High School in the powerhouse Baltimore Catholic League. During his senior season, Briscoe was named a McDonald’s High School All-American Nominee, Runner up for Player of the Year in the BCL, First Team All-BCL as well as Second Team All-Metro by the Baltimore Sun.

Former Kentucky center Jared Carter has signed a deal with Tokyo Cinq Reves in the Japanese Basketball Japan League.

Carter spent last season with the Summerside Storm in the NBL Canada league. He averaged 5.2 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game.

Here is a release from Pro Partner Sports Management:

August 8, 2012 – Pro Partner Sports Management’s Jared Carter has signed a deal to play for Tokyo Cinq Reves in the Japanese Basketball Japan League. The Cinq Reves is an expansion team that will play its first games in the BJ League this season. Translated from French, the team name means “Five Dreams”. The Japanese BJ League sports 20 teams including 2011-12 league champions Ryukyu Golden Kings Okinawa.

Jared Carter played last season with the Summerside Storm in the NBL Canada where he averaged 5.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg, and 1.1 bpg, while shooting 48.7% from the field. Carter’s 1.1 bpg were good enough for fifth overall in the league. The 7’1 Carter, a four-year letter-winner at Kentucky who graduated in 2009, will add a crucial inside presence to his newly formed team as they strive to join the elite clubs of the Japanese BJ League.

“Jared has all the physical gifts necessary to make a tremendous impact Japan” said Pro Partner’s Nick Zaccardi. “With his size, strength, and hustle, Jared is going to make a big splash for the Cinq Reves in their inaugural season.”

Keith Clanton May Be Staying at UCF

Andy Katz of ESPN.com reports that the thinking on Central Florida's Keith Clanton is that he will likely stay put.

Clanton has the option of leaving for his senior season and playing immediately but Katz says he has not contacted any of the interested schools during the past week.

Here is more from ESPN.com:

The biggest potential free-agent prize is Central Florida's Keith Clanton. The one-year postseason ban means the senior forward can leave without sitting out a year. The assumption was that Kentucky, Florida State and South Florida would be the schools of choice for the Orlando product. But throughout this past week none of the schools have heard from him and the thinking is that he still might stay put. He has time to move on to another school. But it would be perfectly normal if he decided to finish his college career where he started and compete for the Knights for one last season even though they can't play in the Conference USA tournament or any postseason event. He can play in front of his family, stay with teammates and one would assume friends and get to the NBA draft from his original destination. And it wouldn't be the strangest thing to actually finish his college career academically in one place instead of fleeing simply because of a postseason ban that may not have mattered if UCF isn't good enough to make a tournament.

John Wall, Rajon Rondo to Help President Obama

Former Kentucky stars John Wall and Rajon Rondo are among NBA stars who will be helping President Barack Obama's fundraising "shoot-around" and dinner in New York on August 22.

Here are more details from the Washington Post:

The Obama campaign is planning a fundraising “shoot-around” and dinner in New York on Aug. 22 featuring several NBA stars, including Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks, Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics, John Wall of the Washington Wizards and others. Jordan, who played for the Chicago Bulls, Obama’s favorite NBA team, and NBA Commissioner David Stern are co-hosting a $20,000-per person fundraising dinner with the president later in the day.

Obama is a longtime basketball fan who regularly plays pickup games with friends and aides. His campaign held a fundraiser last February at the Orlando-area home of NBA player Vince Carter, who is also involved in the New York events.

The campaign is holding a “shoot-around” with players at New York’s Chelsea Piers sports complex, including Anthony, Rondo, Wall, Paul Pierce, Kyrie Irving, Joe Johnson and former NBA centers Patrick Ewing and Alonzo Mourning. WNBA stars Sheryl Swoopes and Dawn Staley are also participating in the event, which will cost $5,000 for a parent and child or two people to have a “shoot-around skills session” with the players. A $250 donation provides an autograph session with the players

Kentucky freshman Nerlens Noel talks basketball and comparisons to Anthony Davis with Hoopsworld:

Florida Writer: 2007 Gators Would Beat 2011 Wildcats

Kevin Brockway, Florida basketball beat writer for the Gainesville Sun, says the 2007 Florida Gators would beat John Calipari's 2011 Kentucky Wildcats.

Brockway made his statement and supporting arguments on Twitter earlier today:

gatorhoops @MikeGriffith32 @gatorhoops Horford > T. Jones, Brewer-Kidd Gilchrist even, guard shooting even, Miller-Richard even off bench.

gatorhoops @Darren__Reese @MikeGriffith32 Davis' weakness was getting winded when teams played up-tempo. Noah best conditioned college big man.

gatorhoops @CosmicWrangler @johnclayiv you seem to forget Kentucky was outscored in second half of nat title game. Tired, perhaps?

gatorhoops @hcschl2 @johnclayiv misinterpreting "run off floor" not from team sense but Noah would get Davis fatigued. Florida would win by 8.

Marquis Teague Signs Rookie Contract with Bulls

Former University of Kentucky point guard Marquis Teague has finally signed his rookie contract with the Chicago Bulls.

Teague, the last first round draft pick to sign a deal, settled for a deal for 100 percent of his slotted salary rather than the traditional 120 percent. He will make $857,000 during his first year and the following years are expected to be at 120 percent.

Here is more from the Chicago Tribune:

When the Bulls signed Kirk Hinrich to a portion of the midlevel exception and Marco Belinelli to the biannual exception, they put themselves in a hard-cap situation of $74.307 million. Thus, negotiations with Teague focused on a first-year salary of less than 120 percent, sources said.

Teague ultimately signed a deal for 100 percent of his slotted salary in the first year, or $857,000, sources said. The following years are expected to be at the 120 percent slotted salary

Here is a release from MSU:

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- The Morehead State men’s basketball program has added Jason Holmes, Maurice Lewis-Briggs, Brent Arrington and Karam Mashour. Holmes and Lewis-Briggs are eligible for the 2012-13 season, while Arrington and Mashour have to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.

“We are excited about the addition of these four young men,” Morehead State Head Coach Sean Woods said. “They are all very talented basketball players who have potential to make significant contributions at this level. I know Jason and Brent well from our time together at Mississippi Valley State, and I’ve been excited about what I’ve seen from Maurice and Karam to this point.”

Holmes, who attended Guerin Prep High School in River Grove, Ill., has one season of eligibility remaining. He comes to MSU after one year at Cochise College (Ariz.) and three seasons at Mississippi Valley State, but sat out last year as a medical redshirt.

Holmes recorded 6.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while knocking down 50 percent from the floor as a sophomore at MVSU in 2009-10. He then averaged 5.7 points and 3.0 boards while connecting on 51 percent from the field for the Delta Devils as a junior in 2010-11.

“Jason was the best post player in the Southwestern Athletic Conference heading into last season, but he suffered an injury and missed the entire year,” Woods said. “He is a versatile lefty who runs well, stretches the defense and can block shots. Jason has experience in a winning environment and will compete for one of our starting spots.”
