Calipari Rewards Long, Malone with Scholarships

Kentucky's Sam Malone and Brian Long will not be walk-ons during the 2012-13 season.

John Calipari has awarded both players with scholarships for this season.

Here is more from the Herald-Leader:

"Unbelievable that coach has given him the opportunity," said Long's father, also named Brian. "Coach told Brian, and Brian told us. It was exciting to hear."

The elder Long, a long-time high school coach in New Jersey, termed the scholarship a reward for good service to the team last season.

"Brian knows his role and knows what he has to do to contribute to the team," the player's father said. "Coach (Calipari) rewarded him for doing the right thing."

Recent Interview with Detroit's Brandon Knight

Kila Peeples of My TV20 News recently caught up with former Kentucky star Brandon Knight.

Knight gave some insight on his favorite ice cream, jersey number and greatest sports movie ever.

Here is an excerpt:

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?
Cookies & Cream

What was your childhood nickname?
BK7

If you weren't an athlete, what would you like to do?
I'd probably be a physical therapist, which is somebody who basically works on the body when somebody has an injury. They know how to do certain things to make the body feel better and get back to normal.

Why do you wear the jersey number you do?
I wear jersey number seven just because it's a divine number, seven is a Godly number. And I was drafted eighth overall and it reminds me of the seven teams that picked players before me and it gives me motivation.

What is your pre-game meal?
It varies. Normally it's some type of meat or chicken. But I actually really like to eat Peanut Butter & Jelly with milk.

Ricky Ledo Ruled Ineligible to Play at Providence in 2012-13

Providence College freshman Ricky Ledo has been declared partially eligible for the 2012-13 men's basketball season.

In other words, Ledo will be allowed to practice with the Providence team but will not be allowed to play in games.

Head coach Ed Cooley released the following statement:

"Today the NCAA informed us that the eligibility waiver for Ricky Ledo has been partially approved and Ricky will be allowed to practice with the team but he can't compete in games. We are excited that Ricky has the opportunity pursue his education and be part of the team. We believe that this gives us the chance to help him grow as an individual."

Ledo had this to say:

"I am happy to be a student at Providence College," Ledo said. "It has always been a dream of mine to represent PC and I am looking forward to my days as a student-athlete."

Report: Billy Gillispie was Reprimanded Earlier This Year

SI.com has confirmed that Texas Tech reprimanded head coach Billy Gillispie earlier this year after learning he was exceeding NCAA practice-time limits.

Gillispie, of course, was accused last week by players and former players of abuse, including similar violations of practice-time rules.

Here is an excerpt:

Texas Tech on Wednesday disclosed that it had reprimanded men's basketball coach Billy Gillispie earlier this year after learning he was exceeding NCAA practice-time limits.

Red Raiders athletic director Kirby Hocutt said the school reported the secondary violations to the NCAA and the governing body approved the penalty that Texas Tech had decided upon. The letter of reprimand came in January and included language that there would be "no tolerance for disregard of rules," Hocutt told The Associated Press after speaking to members of the local media.

Hocutt added that no tolerance covered a "commitment to the spirit of all rules."

The school is now investigating allegations that Gillispie mistreated players, Hocutt said.

Gillispie, 52, has been hospitalized since Friday and did not respond to a text message seeking comment Wednesday.

"If these allegations are proven to be true then I will be extremely upset and disappointed and will handle accordingly," Hocutt said. He declined to say whether that could include Gillispie being fired.

"I'm very troubled by the information I've heard," he said

Patrick Patterson Talks Houston Rockets and More

Jason Friedman of Rockets.com recently caught up with former Kentucky star Patrick Patterson.

The third-year forward talked about his new role with the Rockets and much more.

Here is an excerpt:

JCF: I don’t feel like that sort of leadership role is going to be difficult for you because you’ve been through this process before when you were at Kentucky. Your final year as a Wildcat, you had guys like John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins who, while supremely talented, were still freshmen who needed veteran leadership and guidance, and from a distance you seemed to fill that role perfectly.

PP: Yeah, I was in a perfect situation at Kentucky with John, DeMarcus and Eric Bledsoe. We had those type of players coming into the program who were used to winning but were very young and that made me seem like the older guy on the team. I was a vet, I was the most experienced one and at times it felt like a babysitting job, but other than that it was great and I had a lot of fun.

So it’s kind of a similar situation here in Houston now with a bunch of rookies and a bunch of new faces. Chandler, myself, Marcus and K-Mart have been on this team the longest and so it does feel a bit like déjà vu. That’s why I have to come out there and set the tone from the get-go, be the leader and be the vocal one out on the court, and just do whatever is asked of me by the coaches.

JCF: Well this past week you’ve been much more than just a mentor to these guys; you’ve also been giving them the business on a regular basis, repeatedly taking them to school during many of the one-on-one drills in the low-post. Do you take anything at all from that, or do you just feel like, ‘Hey, I’m the veteran guy, I should be schooling these guys right now?

PP: All the guys here right now – D-Mo, Terrence, Royce, Greg, Omer – are skilled and have their own special moves. I’m just trying to go out there and show them what I can do, show them how hard I’ve worked and what it takes to succeed at this level. And every time I step out on the court with them I’m definitely going to play my hardest so that hopefully it rubs off on them and they do the exact same thing

Harrison Twins Likely Going to Maryland for Midnight Madness

According to Andy Katz of ESPN.com, Kentucky recruits Andrew and Aaron Harrison are likely going to Maryland for Midnight Madness in October.

The visit would come at an interesting time since the Harrison twins are expected to announce their college decisions in late October.

Here is an excerpt:

Don't sell Maryland short on the recruiting front, though. Turgeon is still trying to land two of the top four prizes in the class in Andrew and Aaron Harrison, a pair of perimeter players who said they will attend the same school. The Harrison twins are likely going to College Park for Midnight Madness on Oct. 12, according to a source. But Maryland will have to beat out Kentucky to land the pair from Texas, which would be a monumental task. Villanova, SMU and Baylor are also in the mix.

More Allegations Surface About Billy Gillispie

More troubling allegations have surfaced regarding Billy Gillispie's treatment of players and staff members at Texas Tech.

Here is an excerpt of a report from Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com:

"We practiced a lot more than 20 hours a week," former guard Kevin Wagner told CBSSports.com.

"We used to go more than four hours all the time," added Jaron Nash, who transferred to North Dakota after last season. "I remember that day when we went almost all day. We didn't leave until 9 p.m. or so. It was pretty bad. A lot of guys were really hurt after it. One guy had a stress fracture in both legs."

One source identified that player as African native Kader Tapsoba, who did not play last season while dealing with multiple stress fractures.

"He was literally crying at practice," said the source, who was with the program last season. "He couldn't even run and Gillispie had him running up and down the steps at the arena. I remember the doctor getting the X-rays back and coming to practice and telling Gillispie it was really bad. He'd just ice him up and tell him to go practice."

"He shouldn't have been practicing," he added. "But he bullied everyone, including the trainer. He'd make the trainer make kids come back. Bodies were dropping like flies. One day I walked in and the whole team was in the training room. All the players and even the managers. He'd make them practice."

The team's star player, Jordan Tolbert, cut his hand on the rim one day last year in practice and suffered a four-inch gash across his fingers. The next day, according to one source, Gillispie had the trainer bandage his hand and then instructed Tolbert to dunk the ball every time he caught it.

Gillispie left two Canadian players, Ty Nurse and Dejan Kravic, in scholarship limbo this past summer. According to multiple sources, he wouldn't tell either one whether he was renewing their scholarships yet when they wanted to go home to Canada after summer school ended, he made it clear that if they left, they could not return. Both players had purchased flights home for about $1,000 and wound up having to absorb the cost in fear of not being able to return to Lubbock.

One source said that Gillispie, the night before most games, has everyone in attendance participate in layup lines at the start of practice -- including television and radio broadcasters, strength coaches and assistant coaches.

"If we fumbled the ball, slipped or shot it with the wrong hand, he'd make us run the steps of the arena," the source said. "He got a big kick out of it, but it was demeaning for us as grown men."

Miami Heat to Take Another Look at Josh Harrellson

The Miami Heat are going to give former Kentucky star Josh Harrellson another look as they prepare to sign an additional big man for 2012-13.

Here is more from Sun-Sentinel.com:

Former New York Knicks backup center Josh Harrellson apparently is in the mix to be in the mix for the Miami Heat.

Dealt in the offseason to the Houston Rockets in the Marcus Camby sign-and-trade and later released, Harrellson auditioned for the Heat recently and apparently on the verge of doing so again.

Monday, on his Twitter account, Harrellson posted, "Kentucky it's been fun! Glad I got to see everyone! Now heading to Miami for hopefully the next 9 months."

Harrellson was drafted out of the University of Kentucky with the No. 45 pick of the 2011 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Hornets, with his draft rights then traded to the Knicks.

Harrellson later re-tweeted a reply to his Twitter account emphasizing the "hopefully" part of his original post.

According to a source familiar with the Heat's approach, the team will be holding what essentially is a pre-camp camp in advance of the formal Sept. 29 start to training camp at AmericanAirlines Arena, with Harrellson in that mix of camp hopefuls

The charges involve Muhammad allegedly receiving improper benefits in his recruitment from boosters of his AAU program. Darrin Horn Returns to Lexington, Will Work for ESPN3

Former South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn has returned home to Lexington for the first time since 1991.

Horn, who was fired from South Carolina after last season, has moved his family back to Lexington and will be working for ESPN3 this college basketball season.

Here is more from the Herald-Leader:

Afforded the novelty of free time, Horn thinks he might try to coach his son in youth basketball this winter. He's excited that his entire extended family — parents Ed and Lois; brothers Greg and Mike, sister Missy and all his nieces and nephews — are in Lexington. That means the Horns should have a chance to all be together this Christmas.

"My kids are having a chance to go to school with some of their cousins," Horn says. "That's a pretty nice thing."

Still, Horn plans for this year to be a sabbatical from coaching basketball, not a bridge to a different career. "I'm looking at it as an opportunity, a chance to learn and grow," he says.

Early this summer, John Calipari allowed Horn to observe the Dominican Republic National team practice. At the invitation of a friend in the Indiana Pacers organization, Horn spent four days at the Orlando Summer League observing.

A former Tom Crean assistant at Marquette, Horn worked as a coach at the fantasy camp put on by Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade, whom Horn coached at the Milwaukee school.

Last week, Crean invited Horn to Bloomington to observe an Indiana pre-season workout
