Daniel Orton Has Transitioned Into "A Monster" on the Court

Former University of Kentucky big man Daniel Orton is showing a different side on the court these days from what many fans might remember from his brief stay in Lexington. says Orton was showing Orlando what it missed with his play during the first few days of the Orlando Pro Summer League.

One person described Orton as "a monster" on the court.

In his first two games in Orlando, Orton averaged 12 points and 5.5 rebounds. He then suffered a mild concussion and had to miss the final three games.

Here is an excerpt from

Fans and media members from all over were gushing about how good Orton looked.

“A monster” was what one person said Orton looked like, using the word as a term of endearment to describe his play.

But no group was more surprised than the locals in the Orlando media — the same people who watched Orton sit the bench for the first two years of his career before his unceremonious exit.
They couldn't believe how well Orton moved, how explosive he had become, how feathery his t
ouch had grown and how aggressive he was around the rim.

“All credit is due to the Thunder, the organization and the staff,” Orton said.

“I'm just putting in work. Every day going to work and working hard.”

Hancock's 27 Not Enough, Team Canada Knocks USA Out of Medal Contention at World University Games

Louisville's Luke Hancock scored a game-high 27 points but it wasn't enough as Team Canada defeated the United States 94-85 at the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

The loss knocks Team USA out of medal contention and leaves them in the ninth place game.

“We didn't defend well enough to win the game,” Hancock said after the game. “That's as simple as it gets. If you give up that many points, it's going to be hard to win games no matter what you do.”

Brady Heslip led Canada with 20 points. Kentucky's Kyle Wiltjer only played 4 minutes, finishing with 2 points.

James Bolden Drains Game-Winning Bomb for Kentucky Travelers

Holmes High School star James "Beetle" Bolden nailed a three-pointer in overtime last night to give the Kentucky Travelers a huge victory at the Peach Jam.

With the final seconds ticking away in a tie game, Bolden drained a step-back bomb to give the Travelers a 79-76 win over the Oakland Soldiers.

Kentucky recruit Stanley Johnson nailed a 75-footer that would have tied the game again but officials determined that the shot was taken after time had already expired.

Johnson led all scorers with 28 points on 11-for-22 field goal shooting. He also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Knott County Central's Camron Justice led the Travelers with 18 points and 3 steals. Zach McCormick added 13 points and 4 assists. Bolden finished with 12 points and the game-winner off the bench.

With the critical win, the Travelers still have a legitimate opportunity to advance out of pool play. They are currently playing Howard Pulley and Kentucky recruit Tyus Jones. At 6:00 p.m. this evening, the Travelers will battle Expressions Elite.

Team Manimal 15U, Travelers 16U Head to Elite Youth Invitational

Two Kentucky AAU programs are in Augusta, Georgia this week for the Elite Youth Invitational Tournament.

Team Manimal 15U and Kentucky Travelers 16U will both be playing in Pool C of the 16U division in the highly competitive five-day event.

The tournament features some of the most respected AAU programs in the nation including the likes of All Ohio Red, Georgia Stars Elite, Mac Irvin Fire and Expressions Elite.

Manimal originally planned to play in the 15U national tournament in Arkansas but had a change of plans.

"Team Manimal will be playing Elite Youth Invitational and we picked this event due to the low number of participants in the national tournament in Little Rock," Manimal head coach Maze Stallworth said. "I wanted my kids to get the most exposure and compete against the best and that's why we chose this tourney."

Manimal and the Travelers will be doing battle Friday morning at 9:00 a.m.

Stallworth added that he's excited for the opportunity to put his kids on the court against the likes of the Travelers.

"Our pool is difficult because we are playing up in 16U and will be squaring off against one of the top teams in Kentucky," he explained. "It'll be a good experience for my kids to have a chance to compete against the best."

Manimal will be playing up a division but they have also added talented 6-foot-2 combo guard Stephaun Adams from the U.S. Virgin Islands.

"Stephaun is a new addition to Team Manimal," Stallworth confirmed. "He is the top-rated player in the Virgin Islands and is going to make a splash on the circuit this weekend. He is 6'1'' guard with a high basketball IQ and a high motor."

Adams was named Most Outstanding Player last weekend at the Five Star Camp in Louisville.

Agent Says Rajon Rondo is On Target in His Rehab, Expects 100 Percent Return

Rajon Rondo's agent says the injured Boston Celtics star is "on target in his rehab" following knee surgery.

The Rondo camp expects a 100 percent return to basketball next season.

Here is more from the Boston Herald:

“That sounds right,” Bill Duffy said yesterday at the Orlando summer league. “We don’t want to put any pressure on him and overanticipate, but the main thing is to be healthy and 100 percent. He’s on target in his rehab and we anticipate a 100 percent return.”

Duffy doesn’t expect Rondo to suffer from the uncertainty that continues to hound Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose’s return from knee surgery.

“I think Rajon’s (knee surgery) was less severe, so he’s more optimistic,” Duffy said. “I don’t think that’s Rajon’s nature. He’s not going to be as patient. But psychologically he’ll be fine. That was a big hurdle for Rose, but Rajon isn’t made that way.”

Marcus Lee Named East Bay Male Athlete of the Year

Kentucky freshman-to-be Marcus Lee has been named East Bay Male Athlete of the Year for his outstanding senior season performances in both baskeball and volleyball.

Here is an excerpt about Lee from

Lee averaged 3.6 kills per set and had a team-best 58.9 kill percentage for the Wolverines' volleyball team, which wrapped up its best season in program history with a 42-2 record.

But he was even more dominant in basketball. Lee averaged close to a triple-double (17.9 points, 19.2 rebounds and 6.9 blocks per game).

"He made everything come together and filled all the gaps," Phillips said. "He did the little things and was able to cover some of our deficiencies."

When Lee's senior basketball season was over, he headed to Chicago and New York City to take part in the McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic all-star games. "It was a childhood dream," Lee said of the McDonald's honor back in February. "That was my main goal this year: To finally get there and finally learn to be the best." At Deer Valley, he'll be remembered for more than just being the best on the court and the championships he helped bring home.

"He is a role model, whether he knows it or not," Panzella said. "He has those intangibles that will help set him apart and be successful at the next level."
