WKU Announces 2013-14 Men's Basketball Schedule

Western Kentucky University has announced its men's basketball schedule for the 2013-14 season.

Here is a release from WKU:

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Seventeen regular-season home games, which are the most in program history and include contests against Murray State, Southern Miss and Ole Miss, and two games against 2013 Final Four teams highlight the 2013-14 WKU men's basketball schedule, announced Friday by head coach Ray Harper.

In all, WKU's slate features 17 regular-season contests at E.A. Diddle Arena, nine of which are part of Sun Belt Conference play, plus one preseason exhibition game. WKU faces defending national champion Louisville and 2013 Final Four participant Wichita State on the road in the non-conference portion, as well as hosts long-time rival Murray State, plus Southern Miss and Ole Miss, in December.

"We are pleased with the schedule we have put together for this season," Harper said. "There are plenty of challenges for our squad in the non-conference portion to help us prepare for Sun Belt Conference play, which is always competitive. We are also very excited to be able to play so many home games this season. Our fans mean everything to us, and there is nothing like taking the court at E.A. Diddle Arena and going all out for them.

"When you look at the whole schedule, a non-conference portion with two Final Four teams and two other teams that won at least 27 games before we even get to conference play, it means we will have to be at our best every time we step on the court. But we are thrilled for the challenge and looking forward to getting started."

Marks was in the BBL last season with Cheshire. In 27 games, he averaged 22.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

In his professional career, Marks has played in the UK, France and Hungary.

Here is more from EuroBasket.com:

Wily veteran Chez Marks (191-G-80, college: Morehead St.) becomes the latest signing for the Glasgow Rocks organization. Chez, who hails from the state of Kentucky, will return to the British Basketball League with a climb north from Cheshire up to Scotland and is thrilled to be given the opportunity of playing for the franchise.

'I am very blessed and so excited to be a piece of the Glasgow Rocks. Over my years in the BBL, I have played against Coach Davis numerous times in Glasgow. The city was beautiful, the people were very respectful, the fans were incredible and the organization was very professional. That is what drew my interest in becoming a Rock. My expectations this season are very high as well as Coach Davis, and I want to be a part of helping him meet those expectations.'

The 6'3" shooting guard has spent the majority of his professional career here in the BBL for clubs such as the London Towers, Plymouth University Raiders and the aforementioned Cheshire Phoenix. He has also experienced playing in top leagues such as France-ProB and Hungary on a two year sabbatical before returning to the league.

Since Marks return, he has established a reputation as a dynamic scorer culminating numbers of 22.8 points per contest which was enough to lead the entire league in this statistical category for the 2012/13 season. Marks became a legitimate target on coach Sterling Davis' radar when he showed that he was not only a scorer but that he was also a genuine leader as he took on a player-coach role within the Cheshire organization.

"It is always good to have a guy who will be a players leader on the court and Chez showed that leadership last season taking on a huge task for his teammates."

Jeff Sheppard Doesn't Like One-And-Done System at Kentucky

Former University of Kentucky star Jeff Sheppard made some interesting comments at the annual UK Convention in Franklin, Ohio, earlier today.

Sheppard was critical of the one-and-done system and frankly stated, "I don't like it."

He went on to say that he is more comfortable walking in the basketball office at Louisville than the office at Kentucky because of his relationship with Cards head coach Rick Pitino.

Sheppard jokingly called John Calipari "the enemy" referring to his playing days when Calipari coached at UMASS.

Here are the comments via KSTV:

Sheppard later explained his comments to Kyle Tucker of the Courier-Journal:

ON VIDEO OF HIS COMMENTS MAKING ITS WAY AROUND THE INTERNET: “I hope that the video depicted my intent. I’m all for Coach Calipari and everything. I just – I like, and I think the Kentucky fan in general likes players staying at Kentucky for longer than six or seven months. That’s all. I understand. Heck, if I was good enough to play for six or seven months at Kentucky and get a multi-million dollar contact, I’d have left to. I understand that. But I was talking to a group of traditional Kentucky fans and we would love to get to know Nerlens Noel and see him come back from his knee injury and play again for the Cats. Hopefully everything is taken in context. Obviously Kentucky’s doing great right now. We expect great things year. But, boy, I just wish the whole system was different for all of college basketball. I don’t think I’m in the minority in that.”

ON HIS ‘THE ENEMY’ LINE: “Well, he’s not the enemy. Hopefully the whole clip is played (it was) and not just ‘Calipari is the enemy.’ I was just talking about how it’s different. That was a question from the audience about how things are now at UK. Obviously Coach Cal has done a great job, but there’s just something different about playing for a coach. If Marcus Camby walks into Coach Calipari’s office vs. Ron Mercer walking into Coach Calipari’s office, there’s just a different relationship. Marcus Camby played for Coach Calipari. It’s just a different feeling a different dynamic, and that’s OK. That’s part of it.”

Charges Against UNC's P.J. Hairston Have Been Dismissed

According to multiple reports, all charges against North Carolina star P.J. Hairston have been dismissed.

Hairston was facing an August hearing after being arrested in June on a misdemeanor marijuana charge stemming from a traffic stop. A count of driving without a license was also dropped, according to reports.

Here is more from ESPN.com:

Charges resulting from an early June arrest of North Carolina Tar Heels leading scorer P.J. Hairston have been dismissed, according to a Durham, N.C., court clerk.

Hairston was facing an August hearing after being arrested June 5 on a misdemeanor marijuana charge stemming from a traffic stop. A count of driving without a license was also dropped, the court official confirmed.

Hairston produced proof he had a driver's license and had completed a drug assessment program.
Two passengers -- Elizabeth City State player Miykael Faulcon and former college basketball player Carlos Sanford -- were also charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. Their cases are pending with an Aug. 6 court date.
Scout.com's "Inside Carolina" reported the news earlier Monday.

Hairston was arrested during a license checkpoint in Durham while driving a rented SUV.

Officers also seized a 9mm handgun that was found outside the rental vehicle during the search.
The rental vehicle was one of two driven by Hairston and later linked to Haydn "Fats" Thomas, a convicted felon facing a pending drug case.
