Indiana Pacers Add Popeye Jones to Coaching Staff

The Indiana Pacers have hired former Murray State star Popeye Jones as an assistant coach.

Here is a press release from NBA.com:

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Pacers announced Wednesday that Popeye Jones has been signed as an assistant coach to complete the Pacers’ coaching staff. Per club policy, no terms of the contract are released.

The 43-year-old Jones comes to the Pacers after spending the last three years with the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, one season in player development, the last two as an assistant coach. Prior to that, he was with Dallas for three years in player development. Jones played collegiately at Murray State and was a 1992 second-round pick of the Houston Rockets, who traded his rights to Dallas. He played one season in Italy before joining the Mavericks in 1993 and ended up playing with Toronto, Boston, Denver, Washington and Golden State before retiring in 2004.

“Popeye brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and coach,” said Pacers head coach Frank Vogel. “He comes in as a player development coach focusing on the big men, but he has become a complete coach, great with Xs and Os and game strategy. He will be a great asset to our staff.”

Jones joins long-time assistant Dan Burke and associate head coach Nate McMillan, who was hired in July, on the Pacers’ staff.

Bellarmine University Announces Basketball Staff Changes

Bellarmine University head coach Scott Davenport has announced several changes to his coaching staff for 2013-14.

Here is a release from BU:

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Bellarmine University Men's Head Basketball Coach Scott Davenport has announced several changes in his coaching staff for the 2013-14 school year with former volunteer assistant coach Reece Gaines and part-time assistant coach Michael Scott coming on board on a full-time basis.  In addition, Damien Anderson will join the staff as an assistant coach.

"I have had the fortunate experience to be on some outstanding staffs in my career," said Davenport. "Great staffs have two common characteristics: tremendous chemistry and outstanding work ethic. I am very confident this staff will excel in both areas."

Davenport on Gaines:

"I stated a year ago when Reece joined us as an assistant it would just be a matter of time for him to progress in the coaching field," Davenport said. "He is now ready to embark on what I believe will be an outstanding career. His determination as a player was second to none and now he has transferred that to coaching. He has a tremendous relationship with the players and is really embracing becoming a teacher of the game. He studies the game like he did as a player! He has a very bright future," Davenport added.

 Davenport on Scott:

"Mike has earned the title of full time assistant coach by the most proven method in all of athletics--hard work and dedication," Davenport said. "He has paid his dues as a student manager, graduate assistant, part-time assistant to now being a full time college assistant. Look around the NBA, and you see the likes of Frank Vogel (Pacers) and Lawrence Frank (Nets) as coaches in the greatest league in the world who started as student managers. They all have a healthy appreciation of what hard work is all about. Recruiting is a 24/7 job involving every member of the staff. It takes an entire university to recruit the special young men we target. We are very fortunate from Dr. McGowan on down we recruit as a team!"

 Davenport on Anderson:

"Damien joins us from an outstanding background at St. Xavier and the University of Pacific," Davenport said. "He is an outstanding student of the game and a tireless worker. We have had wonderful success with international players and his knowledge and contacts around the world are very impressive. Basketball is truly a global game and his understanding of the game from an international point of view will be a great asset to our staff."

Buzz on Kentucky Basketball: The Buzz is Back...Permanently

The return of the Buzz:

After an absence, the Buzz on
Kentucky Basketball is back to stay. This daily article, which I'm told has been greatly missed, is one of several exciting changes coming to Allkyhoops. We've been doing this for awhile and I believe 2013-14 will be the site's greatest season yet.

Let's move on to some news, rumors and discussion topics...

Recruiting News:

- Devin Booker, one of the top players in the class of 2014, has cut his final list to five schools: Michigan, Michigan State, Kentucky, Florida and Missouri.

- Texas Tech head coach Tubby Smith has been focusing a lot on Kentucky high school players recently. Smith recently called 2014 PG David Kapinga of Southwestern High School. The former Kentucky head coach has also offered Lafayette's Jackson Davis in recent weeks.

- Jackson Davis has also added new offers from Morehead State and Wright State. Princeton has also offered him a spot on the basketball team.

- Alice Lloyd College has signed Harlan County HS point guard Tyler Brewer for 2013-14.

The Buzz:

- Cordia High School and head coach Rodrick Rhodes have apparently been blessed with a couple of transfers. Returning player A.J. Chisolm posted a picture (see top right) on Twitter Tuesday:

lunumber4  THE FAMILY IS BACK !! CORDIA IS GOING TO BE A PROBLEM! #lionnation missing 6!more then we really going to be bad pic.twitter.com/jnqMVdn2Kw

Apparently, the Lions really are going to be a problem. I'm told that a lawyer, politician and skilled orator has sent a talented point guard to Lotts Creek, as well.

- Southern Miss and head coach Donnie Tyndall opened their exhibition tour in the Bahamas with a 74-65 win over the Street Legends All-Stars. Daveon Boardingham led the way with 17 points and 14 rebounds. Aaron Brown added 14 points.

- Former NFL player Jason Taylor will be attending John Calipari's Fantasy Basketball Experience camp.

- Bellarmine University head coach Scott Davenport announced some staff changes on Tuesday. Reece Gaines and Michael Scott have been hired on a full-time basis for the Knights. Damien Anderson is also joining the staff as an assistant.

- I'm hearing that St. Catharine College will replace former assistant Maze Stallworth (new Casey County HS head coach) with former player Brandon Johnson. Speaking of Johnson, he popped the big question last week and got the answer he was hoping for:

Ex-Butler Star Demetrius McReynolds is Headed to Eastern Florida State College

Former Butler High School star Demetrius McReynolds is headed to Eastern Florida State (JUCO) College for 2013-14.

McReynolds had division I interest from several schools including Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State but failed to qualify.

Here is more from SpaceCoastDaily.com:

Eastern Florida State College men’s basketball coach Jeremy Shulman has landed a prize recruit in Demetrius McReynolds, a 6-foot, 1-inch shooting guard from Louisville, KY, Butler High School.

McReynolds averaged 19.8 points per game in helping the Butler Bears (24-8) to a Sixth Region Tournament runner-up finish last season.

McReynolds was rated as one of the Top 25 players in Kentucky.

McReynolds was also recruited heavily by Murray State, Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky, Sanford, Valporaiso and Lamar, before not qualifying for NCAA Division I.

John Wall Says Full Court, Self-Alley-Oop Video is Real

Washington Wizards point guard John Wall says the amazing full court, self-alley-oop dunk video of him on YouTube is real.

Many have speculated that the video is a product of good editing and that it is fake.

Here is what Wall had to say about it:

“Yeah I can do that [laughing]“  said John Wall of the viral video.  He continued with instructions on how to do the self-alley-oop, “You just got throw it real high, just got to throw it real high and then just run underneath it and try to time as best you can.”

“You’re telling me that video of you throwing the ball full court and dunking the alley-oop was actually real?”  the Dan Patrick questions in disbelief.

John answered again in detail, “Yeah, all you got to do is throw it real high – you see how high I threw it… I can get down the court in probably 3 or 4 seconds, just running, so when you throw the ball real high, you just basically got to time it.”

“It’s nothing you going to be able to do in one try though,” he adds.
