R.J. "Rick" Corman Has Passed Away

It is with a sad heart that I pass along the news that Rick Corman, the founder of R.J. Corman Railroad Group, has passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Here are more details from the Herald-Leader:

R.J. "Rick" Corman, the Jessamine County entrepreneur who built a backhoe business into a multimillion-dollar railroad and construction company, died Friday. He was 58.

Company spokesman Noel Rush said Mr. Corman died about 11 a.m. at his home in Nicholasville. Rush said the company's officials would have a statement later.

University of Kentuck men's basketball coach John Calipari, a friend of Mr. Corman, posted on Twitter shortly after noon: "I'm not in the frame of mind to talk about it right now, but I will shortly. Rest in peace, my good friend."

Calipari also tweeted, "It's been a tough day."

Mr. Corman had been diagnosed in 2001 with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer that attacks the plasma cells in bone marrow and destroys bones. The same disease took the lives of Walmart founder Sam Walton in 1992 and former vice-presidential candidate Geraldine Ferraro in 2011. Complete Article

Anonymous Coach Says UK Has Cancers on the 2013-14 Roster

I'll admit that I'm not a huge fan of's "candid coaches" series because I'm not a huge fan of anonymous comments and quotes.

That being said, today's Candid Coaches question: Is Kentucky poised for a title or disappointment?

According to the article, 87% of coaches interviewed said the 2013-14 edition of the Wildcats will be closer to the 2012 title team than the 2013 NIT team.

There were also some anonymous quotes that stood out, including the comment that Kentucky has "some cancers on the team" this season.

Here is an excerpt:

"They have NBA guys at every position, and two at some positions. And they won't be all young this season. They're just going to overwhelm most everybody they play."

“Last year's team had Ryan Harrow. They had no shot from day one.”

“There's too much talent to be NIT. This is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to flat-out talent. Do they have the character of the 2012? Are there upperclassmen willing to be as unselfish as the as the 2012 team's was? The answers to those questions will determine their fate. They could lose two of their top eight guys and still be a top-five team. How many teams can say that?”

“Calipari will be able to use last year to get their attention. Those guys last year thought it was going to be easy. If he can get this group to surrender to the team like that 2012 team, the talent is there.”

“Too many egos for even Calipari to handle. I think they have some cancers on the team as well.”

Dominican Republic Drops a Tough One at the Buzzer

The Dominican Republic national team dropped a heart breaker in their first game of the Tuto Marchand Continental Cup Thursday.

James Feldeine drained what appeared to be a game-winning three-pointer for the Dominicans with 5.7 seconds to play. With the Dominicans leading 77-76, Brazil missed a shot that was tapped in by Alex Garcia at the buzzer to give the Brazilians a 78-77 victory.

Former Louisville star Francisco Garcia led the way for the Dominicans with 17 points. Eulis Baez added 15 points and Feldeine finished with 12. Eloy Vargas chipped in 8 points and 6 boards.

The Dominicans not only lost the game, they may have lost big man Jack Michael Martinez for the remainder of the event. Martinez suffered a cut near his right eye when he struck a billboard while trying to save a loose ball. He reportedly received 15 stitches.

William Giovannoni led the Brazilians with 15 points. Arthur Silva and Marcelinho Huertas finished with 14 points each.

The Dominican Republic returns to action tonight at 8:30 p.m. against Puerto Rico.

Louisville Releases 2013-14 Men's Basketball Schedule

The University of Louisville has released its complete men's basketball schedule for the 2013-14 season.

Here is a release from UL:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Appearances in the Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, at least 23 games on national television and 20 home games in the KFC Yum! Center highlight the 2013-14 University of Louisville men's basketball schedule.

Nearly half of the Cardinals' 31 games will be played against teams that participated in post-season competition last season, including at least seven from the NCAA Tournament (NCAA Tournament: Cincinnati twice, Memphis twice, Temple twice, Western Kentucky, possible North Carolina in the Hall of Fame Classic; NIT: Kentucky, Southern Mississippi; College Basketball Invitational: College of Charleston, Houston twice, possible Richmond in the Hall of Fame Classic; College Tournament: Fairfield, Hartford). Twenty of the defending NCAA Champions' games will be played against teams that won at least 18 games last season.

Many new opponents will appear on the Louisville schedule this season through new agreements and with the Cardinals' initial season in the American Athletic Conference.

"The American should be a highly competitive conference," said U of L Coach Rick Pitino, whose team played the nation's fourth-toughest schedule by the ratings percentage index (RPI) last season. "I certainly don't enjoy the transitional part of our conference affiliation, but this is the best scenario possible in that we still have many partners from the BIG EAST and Conference USA still aligned with us. We look forward to the challenge."

A limited quantity of season tickets in the 300 level corners of the KFC Yum! Center are on sale now for $781 each, averaging $39 per game, and are renewable for future seasons. A payment plan option is available. Visit and then call (502) GO-CARDS by September for incentives and seat availability (9am-5pm).
