Richie Farmer Pleads Guilty in Government Corruption Case

Former University of Kentucky and Clay County High School basketball player Richie Farmer entered a guilty plea to government corruption charges this morning in U.S. District Court in Frankfort.

Here is an excerpt from the Herald-Leader:

He appeared Friday morning in U.S. District Court in Frankfort.

"I let down the people of Kentucky, I let down my family and friends, and for this I am truly sorry," Farmer said during the proceeding.

Farmer was accused of using Department of Agriculture employees to work on his Frankfort home, including building a basketball court in his backyard. Prosecutors said Farmer also hired friends, including his girlfriend, as special assistants who did little or no work for the agency. Interest Picking Up for Marshall County's Austin Rentfrow Following Big Summer

Marshall County big man Austin Rentfrow is set to visit Bellarmine University on Monday.

Rentfrow, a hard-working 6-foot-7 post player, is on pace to have an outstanding senior season for the Marshals. He had a nice summer with the Louisville Magic after averaging 13.9 points and 8.5 rebounds for his high school team in 2012-13.

Bellarmine is not the only in-state school that has been showing interest in Rentfrow. He has heard from Western Kentucky, Northern Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky.
He has also heard from Belmont, Gardner-Webb and several other schools in recent months.

"That kid is a winner," one coach said of Rentfrow this summer. "He does all the little things that coaches love."

Open Gym: Casey County Rebels and Head Coach Maze Stallworth

I checked out Casey County's open gym last week in Liberty. The Rebels, under new head coach Maze Stallworth, are hoping to improve on last season's 14-17 record and make a run to the 12th Region tournament in 2014.

The Rebels return skilled big man Baylen Hill, a pair of tough senior guards and a group of talented freshmen this season.

The combination of talent and Stallworth's defensive schemes should be more than enough to make the Rebels competitive in the 47th District, where they'll have to find a way to get past Somerset, Wayne County or Rockcastle County come tournament time.

Players to Watch in 2013-14

- Baylen Hill (6'7" senior forward): Hill is a very skilled big man with tremendous upside. Coach Stallworth will depend heavily on Hill for scoring and rebounding. He has the ability to play on the wing or in the paint. Hill has nice touch around the rim and a solid long range jumper. His ceiling is low-to-mid-major division I and he's already receiving interest from several schools including UT-Martin, UVa.-Wise, Northern Kentucky, IU-Southeast, University of the Cumberlands and Berea College.

- Zach Scott (6'0" senior guard): Experienced senior who will be counted on for leadership and scoring. Stallworth describes him as arguably his toughest player.

- Cody Clarke (5'8" senior guard): Tough guard who will also provide a wealth of leadership and toughness.

- Jake Smith (5'10" freshman guard): Smith spent the season with Hoop Dreams on the AAU circuit and will be a handful in the 12th Region in the future. Look for Smith to make an impact as a freshman.

- Breece Hayes (6'3" freshman wing): Hayes is a highly-touted football player. Stallworth expects him to be one of his hardest workers this coming year. He is very receptive to coaching and always working hard to improve.

- Collin Miller (5'8" freshman guard): Some publications have Miller rated as the best point guard in Kentucky in the Class of 2017. He is also currently with the football team. Stallworth will depend on Miller to take control as a freshman and be one of the team's vocal leaders.

- Jordan Brown (junior forward): Has shown great improvement over the summer. Stallworth describes him as a tremendous worker who punches the clock each and every day.

Other notable players:

- Caleb Wesley, Tanner Davis (football), Landon Carmen (currently injured), Micco Randall (football)

Comments from Coach Stallworth:

"I believe we have a solid group of kids that have put in the time since July 10th. They have all been very receptive. We will take our lumps early because a new style and just getting adjusted to the overall new culture of our program. I feel that once January hits, we will be in great form to make a run at a district title, which hasn't happened here in a decade.

"I feel confident that we have a great group of kids who can do something special this year. That players have embraced the idea of being a family and giving it all for each other and I'm very happy with the progress they've made from week 1. I believe the Rebel nation of Casey County is deserving of getting back to the basketball tradition they once had."

Kentucky Offers 2014 Star Myles Turner During Home Visit

Kentucky head coach John Calipari extended  a scholarship offer to 2014 big man Myles Turner during a home visit last night.

Turner, who stands 7-feet tall, is currently ranked No. 2 overall in the Class of 2014 by has him ranked at No. 6 overall.

Ben Roberts of the Herald-Leader caught up with Turner's high school coach:

Trinity High Coach Mark Villines was present for Wednesday night’s in-home visit, and he said it went well.

“The family and everybody was very impressed with Coach Calipari,” Villines told the Herald-Leader. “I mean, it’s Kentucky basketball, but he really pitched it to Myles. He didn’t sugarcoat anything — was very honest. When he walked away, the initial vibe was they were very impressed.”

Calipari is hoping Turner visits him next. The ideal date would be Oct. 18 for Big Blue Madness, which already has a guest list that includes 2014 targets Stanley Johnson, Trey Lyles, Kelly Oubre and James Blackmon Jr.

“They really want him to come up for midnight madness,” Villines said. “But everybody wants him to come that weekend. So I’m not sure where he’s going to choose, but he did throw that out there. And I know Myles is considering it.”
