Northern Kentucky Can't Keep Up With Northwestern on the Road

Northwestern 76
Northern Kentucky 55

Final from Evanston, Illinois

Game recap by NKU:

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northern Kentucky dropped a 76-55 decision to Northwestern on Saturday afternoon in Welsh-Ryan Arena. Todd Johnson scored a team-high 14 points for the Norse, who fell to 6-7 on the season.

"I thought we played really well for the first 15 minutes of the game," said NKU head coach Dave Bezold. "We had great energy on both ends of the floor, but Northwestern put up that run to end the first half and we played too inconsistently the rest of the way. The beauty of college basketball is a longer schedule, and now we need to gear up for Youngstown State."

Deontae Cole knocked down a three on Northern Kentucky's opening possession and NKU led by as many as five in the opening half, but Northwestern battled back to even the score at 20-all. A 16-4 run by the Wildcats over the final six minutes put the Norse down 36-24 at the break.

Northwestern (9-4) pushed the lead out to 18 early in the second half, but Northern Kentucky kept battling. Keyed by seven-straight points from Johnson, the Norse whittled into the Wildcats lead and pulled within nine, 56-47, with just over 11 minutes to play.

The Wildcats responded with eight-consecutive points to put the game out of reach for the Norse.

Johnson was the lone player for NKU to reach double-figures with 14 after shooting 5-for-9 from the floor, including 3-for-6 from three. Chad Jackson added nine points, and Jalen Billups chipped in eight points, five boards and four blocks.
