Game recap by BU:

EVANSVILLE, Ind.-The No. 2/4 Bellarmine Knights rode a huge second half to post an 83-70 road victory over the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game at the Physical Activities Center.

The Screaming Eagles opened the game with a hot hand from the outside, hitting six of 10 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to post a 35-33 halftime lead. However, it was a different story after the break. Senior Chris Whitehead exploded for 19 second half points en route to scoring a career high 25 for the Knights, and Bellarmine shot a sizzling 73.9 percent--scoring on all but five second half possessions--to pull away for a double digit victory.

In addition to Whitehead's offense, Bellarmine combatted the Screaming Eagles with a solid defensive effort after halftime to hold USI to just 33.3 percent in the second period including 3-14 from long range.

"They (USI) are a great basketball program, so this is a quality, quality win," said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. "As a teacher, as a basketball coach when you see people that you're teaching and coaching all the time get better and improve that's a source of great satisfaction. I read a quote to the guys at the walk through today from Dr. Martin Luther King about the most special people in the world being the ones that make others better. Dr. King would be proud of Chris Whitehead tonight, because he made everybody better."

In addition to Whitehead, the Knights got big contributions from up and down the lineup. George Suggs was involved in two pivotal plays for the Knights, nailing a triple at the end of the first half and tacking on a free throw for a rare 4-point play to pull Bellarmine within two heading to the locker room. Then, at the midway point of the second half, the 6-10 junior then hit a crucial three that provided the Knights a comfortable 9-point cushion at the 9:02 mark. Suggs finished with 14 points, three blocked shots and five rebounds.

Senior Jake Thelen also posted solid numbers, going 8-for-11 from the field and finished with 17 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Rusty Troutman also hauled in seven boards as the Knights outrebounded USI 34-22. In addition to his game high 25 points, Whitehead also had a game high with five assists.

On the other side of the court, Gavin Schumann opened up on fire, but cooled in the second period and finished with 21 points on 7-for-17 shooting to lead the Screaming Eagles.
