Centre College Earns Huge Road Win at Birmingham Southern to Take Lead in SAA Standings

Centre College 69
Birmingham Southern 42

Final from Birmingham, Alabama

Game recap by CC:

Behind 29 points from Blake Scinta, the Centre men's basketball team picked up its sixth straight win in a 69-42 road victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday in Birmingham, Ala.

After seeing a 30-game home winning streak come to an end in the teams' previous meeting this season, the Colonels got revenge in the rematch, leading the entire way in the victory. Blake Scinta (Louisville, Ky.) was an efficient 12-of-16 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line on the way to his 29 points, while Mike Geegan (Bowling Green, Ky.) added 14 points for the Colonels. Harrison Deneka led Birmingham-Southern with 11 points while Centre held the conference's leading scorer, Larry Thomas, to 10 points.

The victory pulls Centre into a 3-way tie with Sewanee and Rhodes at the top of the conference standings, an inspired comeback after the Colonels opened league play at an uncharacteristic 2-3 through the first five games. The Panthers fall to 6-5 in SAA competition and 14-8 overall, while Centre improves to 17-4 on the season.

After overcoming an early deficit, Centre never trailed in the game. The Colonels took their first lead on a Scinta layup late in the first half and never let go, outscoring the Panthers 14-8 over the final five minutes and taking a 29-26 lead to halftime.

Centre pushed the lead out to double digits by outscoring Birmingham-Southern 21-6 over the first 10 minutes of the second half, led by Tyler Wesley (Crestwood, Ky.) scoring all seven of his points during the stretch. Despite the Panthers' best efforts to come back, Centre pushed its lead out to as many as 27 points in the closing minutes on a Bryan Repishti (Louisville, Ky.) 3-pointer.

The Colonels return to action when they travel to Millsaps on Sunday.
