Northern Kentucky Can't Keep Up at North Florida

North Florida 88
Northern Kentucky 69

Final from Jacksonville, Florida

Game recap by NKU:

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – In a game which the final score was not indicative of its competitive nature, Northern Kentucky men's basketball fell 88-69 to North Florida at UNF Arena on Saturday night. The Norse now stand at 11-16 overall and 5-7 in Atlantic Sun Conference action. North Florida improved to 18-11 (10-2 A-Sun).

"Winning on the road is tough in college basketball," said head coach Dave Bezold. "It takes a certain mental toughness to win away from home, which we displayed through the first 33 minutes, but we have to sustain it for the full 40."

In a foul-plagued first half, the Norse controlled the tempo and scoreboard until the final 1:18. The Norse led by as many eight, 19-11, with just under eight-minutes to play, but the Ospreys closed the half on 9-2 run to take a 35-30 advantage into the locker rooms.

Chad Jackson and Jalen Billups led the way with six points apiece.

NKU's bench played a key roll in the opening frame, with Jordan Garnett and Todd Johnson tallying five and four points, respectively.

Jalen Nesbitt keyed North Florida's late run with seven of the nine points on his way to 15 at the break.

NKU made 10-of-25 attempts (40 percent) compared to 11-of-28 (39.2 percent) shooting for UNF. The Ospreys knocked down one more three in the frame than NKU, 3-2, but the Norse led the battle of the boards, 19-18.

Jackson's quick six points sparked a 10-5 run by the Norse to open the second half and tie the game at 40.

After Demarcus Daniels and Billups traded buckets, the Ospreys went on another 9-2 spurt to grab a 51-44 advantage. But, the Norse kept battling.
