Kentucky State's Season Ends in First Round of SIAC Tournament

Benedict 59
Kentucky State 46

Final from Birmingham, Alabama

Game recap by KSU:

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Brennan Reynard scored a game-high 16 points to power Benedict to a 59-46 win over Kentucky State in the first round of the 2015 SIAC Basketball Tournament on Monday inside Bill Harris Arena.

Benedict (16-11) dictated the pace in the first half, holding Kentucky State (9-18) to just 29 percent shooting and forcing nine turnovers. Benedict was consistently able to race down the court after turnovers or missed shots and had a 15-point lead, 33-18 at the break.

The Thorobreds played much better in the second half, outscoring BC 28-26 in the final 20 minutes, but could get no closer than seven points.

"They did a phenomenal job of taking us out of what we wanted to do," said Kentucky State head coach Antwain Banks. "They capitalized on turnovers and our bad shots, which are just as bad as turnovers. That deficit in the first half was just too much for us."

Reynard hit 7-of-12 shots from the floor and also tallied seven assists and four steals while tying with teammate Deonte Johnson for a game-high eight rebounds. In addition to his rebounds, Johnson scored 11 points. Jordan Smith added eight points and Andrew Crawford added seven points. Roberto Montavani posted a solid line score for the Tigers, with five points, seven rebounds, two steals and a game-best four blocks.

Ulysses Thomas III, with 12 points, and Malcolm Smith who finished with 10, carried the offensive load for the Thorobreds. Darrien Wilkins chipped in eight points, six rebounds and two blocks.

Benedict advances and will face the SIAC western division champions Stillman Tigers, Wednesday, at 7:45 p.m. CST.
