Morehead State Adds Derrick Tilmon to Coach Staff

Morehead State and head coach Sean Woods have hired Derrick Tilmon as an assistant men's basketball coach.

Here's a release from MSU:

MOREHEAD, Ky. -- Derrick Tilmon, who was an assistant men's basketball coach at Missouri State from 2012-15, has joined Morehead State's staff in the same capacity. He will have a variety of duties, including working with post players, assisting with recruiting and helping with scouting.

"I want to welcome Derrick and his family to Morehead State," Head Coach Sean Woods said. "We are really lucky to get someone of Derrick's caliber. He has lots of experience, as both a player and coach, at all levels of college basketball. Derrick will fit in well with our student-athletes, coaches and support staff. He's a hard worker with a nice personality."

The 2013-14 season highlighted Tilmon's time at Missouri State. The Bears finished 20-13 overall and 14-3 at home en route to a berth in the Postseason Tournament. That MSU team had one All-Missouri Valley Conference player and one All-MVC Freshman Team selection.

"I want to thank Coach (Sean) Woods for this great opportunity," Tilmon said. "I think we have a terrific coaching staff and lots of talented student-athletes here at Morehead State. It seems like this program is on the verge of doing something special, which would be great for everyone involved. I've been impressed with what I've seen in my first week here."

Prior to his three seasons at Missouri State, Tilmon spent three years (2009-12) at Southern Indiana. The Screaming Eagles went 72-16 (.818) overall, winning 24 contests each year, and captured the 2012 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament title. Tilmon worked with nine all-conference picks and three Division II All-Americans.

Tilmon spent the 2005-06 season as an assistant coach at Division II member Shorter (Ga.) before a three-year stint, from 2006-09, as an assistant coach at Division II school Kentucky Wesleyan.

A native of Clarksdale, Miss., Tilmon played five years of professional basketball in Europe. He made stops in both Austria and the Netherlands. The 6-foot-7 post player earned a spot on the Netherlands All-Star team and was part of the Netherlands Championship Series.

Tilmon played one year at Hiwassee (Tenn.) before spending his final three seasons at Missouri Valley Conference member Southern Illinois. He was a three-year starter for the Salukis, scored 605 points and finished 13th in school history with 58 blocked shots. His senior campaign in 1999-2000, SIU finished 20-13 and advanced to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament.
