Former Bellarmine Point Guard Chris Whitehead to Play Professionally in Cyprus

Former Bellarmine University point guard Chris Whitehead has signed with Koopspor in Cyprus' North League Stage A league.

Here is a release from BU:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In one year with the Bellarmine University men's basketball team, Chris Whitehead went from a relative question mark to making an impact to signing a pro contract.

Following an All-Great Lakes Valley Conference senior campaign, the former Knights point guard inked a deal with the professional team Koopspor of Cyprus, which is an island in the eastern Mediterranean near Turkey.

"The level of excitement was unexplainable," Whitehead said. "There was a big weight off my shoulders. After college, you don't get to decide to continue playing basketball. Somebody else decides for you."

Whitehead made that decision easy for Koopspor, which placed second in its league last season. The New Albany, Indiana, native was named first-team All-GLVC after leading the Knights in assists (5.3) and steals (a program-record 70) while ranking second in scoring (15.0). He shot 57.8 percent from the floor and 74.1 percent from the free throw line.

"I am thrilled for Chris and his opportunity to pursue professional basketball," BU Coach Scott Davenport said. "I congratulated him and I know he has worked incredibly hard for this chance. He is a winner and has the physical tools to affect the game in many ways at both ends of the court.

"The competition he faced at Bellarmine will serve him well in his new challenge. He is the ninth former Bellarmine player currently playing overseas, and our program and everybody associated with Bellarmine take pride in following all of our former players as they pursue their careers on and off the floor."
