HOPEWELL — “Relentless.” It’s a word that new Hopewell basketball coach Kurt Young said his players will become very familiar with.

He used it to describe the style of play that fans can expect next season, and he also used the word to describe his expectations for the players in the classroom as well. “We are going to be relentless. It is a word our young men will hear a lot. And we really preach that, in the classroom and on the court,” Young said.

Hopewell Athletic Director Marshall Parker made the announcement Tuesday that Young, a longtime college basketball coach, will become the head basketball coach of the Blue Devils.

This will be Young’s first time coaching at the high school level. It will also be his first time teaching high school students as well and will be teaching world history, although he has taught at the collegiate level.

“I am very excited. When I first decided I wanted to be a coach, high school coaching is what I thought I’d get into, and so it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Young said.

He said both of his parents were coaches on girls high school teams, and he wanted to get involved with kids at a younger age.

Young has coached at the college level for more than 20 years. He was most recently the head assistant coach at Northern Kentucky University from 2009-2014 before joining a recruiting company and starting his own company, KY Elite, to develop basketball players and teams.

He has also worked at Arkansas Tech University, Hawaii Pacific University, Georgetown College, Labette Community College, Thomas University, Northwestern State University, and Tallahassee Community College.

Young has a bachelor’s degree from Morehead State University and a master’s degree from Northern Kentucky University.
