Asbury 87 Welch 54
* Recap by AU
NASHVILLE - It's always tough to get out of the gate with a season opening win, and historically even tougher for Asbury University's men's basketball to do it on the road. But the Eagles captured their fourth straight season opener Friday evening in Nashville, taking down the host Flames of Welch College by a score of 87-54.
The win was also the second straight on the road to open the season. Prior to last season the Eagles had opened the season at home five straights times, going 4-1 in that stretch.
It wasn't all peaches and cream for the Eagles (1-0) from the start. They actually trailed the Flames 24-22 with 7:55 left in the first half. A big turnaround and 22-7 run over the next eight minutes, though, put the Eagles up 44-31 at the half and they cruised the rest of the way.
Led by Daulton Peters and his 13 points Asbury outscored the hosts 40-23 in the second half and sealed the win. Kristian Svendsen added 11 points for the Eagles and Kyle Lamb, returning for the first time since a season-ending injury near the end of last season, pitched in 10 points.
A full box score was not yet available and will be added to AsburyEagles.com when it is complete.
The Eagles stay in Nashville to go up against Fisk University at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday. That game will be preceded by the Asbury women playing Fisk at 3 p.m. EST. Last season Asbury beat Fisk 95-72 in the Luce Center on January 20.
