EKU's Reischel and Mayo Sweep OVC Weekly Awards

Eastern Kentucky's Jarelle Reischel and Nick Mayo swept the OVC weekly awards on Monday.

Reischel, fresh off a 37-point performance against Longwood, was named Player of the Week and Newcomer of the Week.

Mayo earned Freshman of the Week honors.

Jarelle Reischel, G/F • Sr., 6-7, 210 • Frankfurt, Germany • Eastern Kentucky

Reischel, the transfer from Rhode Island, averaged 20.3 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals/game and hit 56.8 percent (21-of-37) from the field, 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from 3-point range and 77.3 percent (34-of-44) from the free throw line as Eastern Kentucky compiled a 3-1 record last week. He capped the week with a career-high 37 points on 13-of-17 shooting (3-of-5 3-pointers), grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out six assists, had three steals and two blocks in a 110-97 victory over Longwood in the final game of the @EKUHoops Classic. It marked the most points by an EKU player since Shawn Fields scored 36 in the 2002-03 season. He also opened the week with a 17-point, 13-rebounds performance at UNC Wilmington (the team’s only loss of the young season). The senior had nine points and five rebounds in a win over Ball State and 18 points and seven rebounds in a victory over South Carolina State. Reischel currently leads the OVC in scoring (20.4 points/game) and is fourth in rebounding (8.2/game).

FRESHMAN

Nick Mayo, F • Fr., 6-9, 220 • Oakland, Maine • Eastern Kentucky

In four games last week Mayo averaged 10.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 0.5 steals/game while hitting 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field and was a perfect 1-of-1 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. The freshman scored a season-high 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting in the Colonels 92-83 victory over South Carolina State on Saturday. He also had five rebounds, a block and assist in the victory. He followed that with eight points, four rebounds, a block and steal in a home court victory over Longwood. Mayo opened the week with 12 points, five rebounds, an assist and steal in a road loss to UNC Wilmington.
