Game recap by KSU:

FRANKFORT, Ky. -- The Kentucky State men's basketball team picked up its first win of the season and the first win for head coach Darnell Williams in a 97-84 victory over Asbury University on Wednesday at the Exum Center.

Six Thorobreds reached double figures in the game, led by William Bryant with 18 points. Kevin Shaw added 14, while Dorian Jordan chipped in 13 and tied a career high in assists with 11.

Though it was the first win as a head coach for Williams, he deflected all the credit to his players.

"I'm just happy for the guys to get their first victory of the year," said Williams, who previously served as an assistant at Kentucky State before taking over the head coaching duties this year. "They were talking about how it's my first one, but I didn't play the game. I didn't set a screen, I didn't make a shot, and I didn't make a pass. It's all about them."

The game went back and forth early and was tied at 27 after 12 minutes of play. Kentucky State took over from that point, however, with Teddy Ware and Kevin Shaw combining to score 11 straight points over the next three minutes for a 38-27 lead.

The Thorobreds took a 48-38 lead to the half, and Asbury would not seriously threaten the rest of the way. Kentucky State held a 62-49 lead five minutes into the second half before pulling away with another 11-0 run to build the lead to 73-49. The Thorobreds went on to lead by as many as 26 points at the 5:08 mark before Asbury cut into the margin in the closing minutes.

Kentucky State shot 59 percent (39-of-66) from the field while holding Asbury to 41 percent (28-of-68) shooting. The Thorobreds also enjoyed an advantage on the glass, outrebounding the Eagles 41-32.

Also finishing in double figures for Kentucky State were Ware with 13 points, Malcolm Smith with 12, and Tryston Ford with 10. The Thorobreds' Reggie Breeden led all players with 10 rebounds, while teammate Julius Barton had a game-high 10 blocks.
