Kentucky State's Malcolm Smith Named SIAC Player of the Week

Kentucky State University's Malcolm Smith was named SIAC Player of the Week on Monday.

Smith scored a career-high 27 points in last week's loss to Wilberforce.

Here are details from KSU:

ATLANTA – After scoring a game-high 27 points in a season-opening loss to Wilberforce, Kentucky State's Malcolm Smith was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

The 27 points were a career high for Smith, a sophomore guard from Cincinnati, Ohio. Though the Thorobreds eventually fell in overtime to Wilberforce, Smith's points came at key times, including 11 in a second half run that helped Kentucky State build its biggest lead, as well as four in overtime. Smith also recorded three rebounds, an assist, and a block in the game.

In this week's other SIAC superlative announcement, Triston Thompson was recognized as the league's Newcomer of the Week.

Kentucky State's top returning scorer from last season, Smith was a Preseason All-SIAC selection and was also the team's top scorer with 14 points in the previous week's exhibition loss at Kentucky.

The Thorobreds (0-1) open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host Asbury University at 7 p.m. at the Exum Center.
