Murray States Drops Exhibition Game to NAIA Opponent Freed-Hardeman

The Murray State Racers dropped an 87-85 exhibition game in overtime Thursday to Freed-Hardeman at the CFSB Center in Murray, Ky.

Bryce Jones and Damarcus Croaker led the Racers each with double-double performances. Jones had 14 points and 10 assists, while Croaker pulled down 10 rebounds to go with his 14 points. Gee McGhee tossed in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

After leading by as many as 11 points in the first half, the Racers had to settle for a 38-34 lead at the intermission.

Leading by 12 (59-47) with 8:47 remaining, the Racers looked to be in control. However, the Lions chipped away and eventually took the lead on an Orlando Bass 3-pointer with 3:14 left 70-69.

The Racers twice took one point leads on baskets by McGhee and Wayne Langston with 35 seconds left, but the game went into overtime tied 76-76.

In extra time, a Croaker 3-pointer and fast break finish by Langston put the Racers ahead 83-78 with 2:13 left.

Down by two points, McGhee hit a pair of free throws to tie it again at 85-85, before Bass hit a jumper for the win with 1.4 seconds left.

The Racers had a poor shooting night in going 4-of-29 from 3-point range. MSU won the battle of the boards 44-42, forced 22 turnovers and had 13 steals.

The Racers open the program’s 91st season of collegiate basketball Friday (Nov. 13) when they host the Harris-Stowe State Hornets at 7 p.m. The season opener is a women’s and men’s doubleheader at The Bank. The Murray State women host Oakland City at 5 p.m.

Tonight’s game marked the fourth straight season the Racers and Lions have met in an exhibition.
