Spalding University Slips Past Berea College

Spalding University 85
Berea College 82

Final from Berea, Kentucky

Game recap by BC:

Berea, KY- The Berea College men's basketball team opened up their season this evening with a home match up against the Golden Eagles of Spalding University. The fans filled the arena to see basketball and the homecoming festivities.

Berea got off to a quick start as head coach John Hemenway used the same fast paced, heavy substitution pattern offense as last season. The team used hot three point shooting, going 6-10 as well as shooting 75% from the FT line to take a 40-34 lead going into the half. Richard Parker led the team with 14 points in the first half.

The Mountaineers momentum did not carry over into the beginning of the second half. The Golden Eagles used a 9-2 run to turn a deficit to a 43-42 lead. The momentum from that run and the help of good free throw shooting put the Golden Eagle up by as much as 13 at one point. Just as it looked as if Spalding would walk away with the victory the Mountaineers fueled a run of their own. With under 2 minutes left to play junior Anthony Myrks found Parker in the corner for a three point play that cut the Golden Eagles lead to six. With 50.3 seconds left on the clock Myrks went 1 for 2 at the charity stripe cutting the lead to three, 81-78. Berea was not able to finish their comeback and in the end the Golden Eagles nipped the Mountaineers 85-82.

Berea was led by Parker with a team high 29 points going 8-10 from the FT line and hitting five threes in the game.

Berea will be back in action at home on Monday, November 16th when they take on Crown College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
