Centre College Gets Past Hanover in Overtime

DANVILLE, Ky. ( – Senior forward Blake Scinta (Louisville, Ky.) along with junior guards Sam Gruber and Matt Gump (Bellefontaine, Ohio) combined for 55 points to lead the Centre men's basketball team to a thrilling 84-80 com-from-behind win in overtime on Wednesday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Colonels erased a 16-point first half deficit and closed the game connecting on 26 straight free throw attempts en route to their fifth consecutive triumph, improving to 5-1 on the year. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 1-4 on the season.

With Centre holding an early 5-2 lead, Hanover used a 15-0 run to gain a 17-5 advantage with just over 12 minutes to play in the first half.

The Panthers would push the run to 22-4, as Hanover held a 24-9 lead with 7:55 remaining in the opening period. The Panthers eventually built their lead to as many as 16 points at 28-12 at the 6:24 mark of the first half.

Gump then scored seven of his 18 points and senior forward Tyler Wesley (Crestwood, Ky.) made a pair of layups to close the half, shrinking the Hanover lead to 11 points at the break.

The Panthers took a 13-point lead at 38-25 on a Corey Muchmore layup with 16:52 to play in the second half, when Centre answered with an 18-5 surge highlighted by seven points by freshman guard Jarod Griffin (Lexington, Ky.) and a pair of Gruber 3-pointers, to knot the game at 43-43 with 11:18 remaining.
