Transy's Season Ends in HCAC Semifinals

Mount St. Joseph 71
Transylvania 65

Final from Defiance, Ohio

Game recap by TU:

Defiance, OH – Another season-high scoring night from junior Alex Jones and late-game comeback by the Transylvania men's basketball came just short against the Mt. St. Joseph Lions in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals, as the #2 seed Lions advanced to the title game with a 71-65 win.

The loss ends the Pioneers' 2015-2016 season at 11-16 overall, and 10-10 against HCAC opposition.

The night also concluded the illustrious careers of seniors Parker Stansberry and Lowell Gordon, two steadfast mainstays of Coach Brian Lane's program for the last four years. Stansberry's final career line contained 12 points, seven rebounds, one assist, two steals, and three blocks, analogous to the multi-faceted reign he exacted during his time at Transy. Gordon's line also reflected his understated, yet impactful journey with the Pioneers, playing 27 minutes (fourth-highest for the Pioneers on this night) and grabbing two boards and two assists in his last stand.

Like the previous two meetings against Mt. St. Joseph in the regular season, this HCAC conference showdown between the #2 and #6 seeds in the tournament contained more than its fair share of theatrics and late-minute drama between the two closest southern neighbors in the conference.

The Pioneers signaled their intentions right off the tip as four different starters scored en route to an 8-5 lead over the first five minutes of the contest. After the Lions took an 11-10 lead, the Pioneers embarked on an 11-2 run, bolstered by a pair of field goals from freshman guard Cooper Theobald and Jones.
