Pelphrey, Stansbury and Kenny Payne Mentioned as Prevalent Names in WKU Coaching Search

According to Zach Greenwell of the Bowling Green Daily News, there are six names that have been mentioned the most in the Western Kentucky coaching search.

The names include UK assistant Kenny Payne, former Arkansas and South Alabama head coach John Pelphrey, Kansas assistant Kurtis Townsend, Xavier assistant Travis Steele, former Mississippi State head coach Rick Stansbury and former WKU head coach Dennis Felton.

Dennis Felton, assistant coach, Tulsa – Coached WKU from 1998-2003, leading the Hilltoppers to three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2001-03. Spent time in the San Antonio Spurs organization after coaching Georgia. Felton's son, Jazz, is a student manager for the Hilltoppers.

Kenny Payne, associate head coach, Kentucky – Former Louisville standout and NBA player has been a key member of coach John Calipari’s Kentucky staff since 2010.

John Pelphrey, TV analyst – Paintsville native and former Kentucky star was most recently an assistant at Florida under Billy Donovan. Had head coaching stints at Arkansas and South Alabama.

Rick Stansbury, associate head coach, Texas A&M – Battletown native won 293 games in 14 years at Mississippi State, helped Texas A&M to a regular-season Southeastern Conference title this year.

Travis Steele, associate head coach, Xavier – Has been coach Chris Mack’s top assistant, helping the Musketeers to seven NCAA Tournaments.

Kurtis Townsend, assistant coach, Kansas – Was a WKU point guard under coach Gene Keady from 1978-80. Has never been a head coach but has been with Kansas under Bill Self since 2004, helping the Jayhawks to a 2008 national title.
