Union College's Season Ends in First Round of NAIA Tournament

Union College's season came to an end last week in the first round of the NAIA Division II national tournament. 

The Bulldogs ended the season with a 28-7 overall record.

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - The Union College men's basketball team's quest for a national championship came to a halt on Wednesday as Cal Maritime (Calif.) pulled off an 81-70 upset.

The Bulldogs end the season 28-7 overall, marking the third year in a row with at least 28 wins.

Early on, second-seeded Union used a 14-4 run to open up a 25-13 lead with 10:22 to go in the half. After No. 7 seed Cal Maritime cut the margin down to seven, but Lonnie Smith (SR/Birmingham, Ala.) hit a 3-pointer and Levon Harper (JR/Danville, Va.) added a basket to make it 32-20 with 6:49.

The Keelhaulers (23-9 overall) turned up the offensive heat, embarking on a 17-5 rally to pull even with the Bulldogs. Zach Davis hit a jumper to make it 37-37 with 59 seconds left in the half. Union, though, took a 39-37 lead into the half thanks to Gerrard Newby (JR/Lexington, Ky. ) scoring a putback with one second on clock.

As the second half got underway, Union opened up a five-point edge. Sean Brown (JR/Louisville, Ky. ) grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in the basket to push the Bulldogs' lead to 46-41 with 16:13 to play. After Cal Maritime tied game at 48-all, Brown scored again to give Union a 50-48 lead.

No. 2 Indiana Wesleyan won the Division II national championship Tuesday night with a 69-66 win over No. 1 Saint Francis (Ind.).
