Donnie Butcher Earns 200th Career Home Win at University of the Cumberlands

Head coach Donnie Butcher won his 200th career game at home for University of the Cumberlands earlier this week.

The Patriots knocked off Shawnee State 71-66 Monday night.

Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands men's basketball team used a 14-6 run to end the first half and defeat Shawnee State 71-66 in Mid-South Conference action Monday night at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. The win was also a milestone for UC Head Coach Donnie Butcher, who earned his 200th career home victory.

"It's great to reach this milestone, our team came out playing hard right from the tip," said Butcher. "We battled hard down the stretch and made plays when we needed them to get a win in conference."

Cumberlands (9-2; 1-1 MSC) came out strong as Marquis Yates (SR/Manassas, VA) drained a three-pointer to start the game. Shawnee State (5-5; 0-2 MSC) responded with an 8-2 run, before Dez Marshall (JR/Shelbyville, KY) hit a three-pointer to even the game 8-8 with 14:24 remaining in the first half. That three-pointer sparked a 13-2 run, which included three three-pointers, for Cumberlands to give the Patriots a 24-10 lead with 7:11 remaining. After trading baskets, the Patriots went on a 14-6 run to end the first half and take a 39-21 lead at the break. Yates and Eric Duncan (JR/Stockton, CA) each netted 12 points in the half to spark the offensive.

Yates and Marshall each hit from behind the arc to extend the Patriots lead to 45-21, their largest lead of the game. The Bears scored 12 unanswered points over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 45-33 with 13:04 remaining. Yates scored eight of the Patriots next 14 points to give Cumberlands a 55-41 advantage with seven minutes left. Two minutes later, Shawnee State cut the lead to nine, before Kelsley Wilkinson (SR/SW Ranches, FL) drained a three to put the Patriots ahead 59-47. Wilkinson scored nine of the Patriots next ten points to give Cumberlands a 64-53 lead with 45 seconds remaining. Shawnee State went on a 13-6 run to end the game for the 71-66 final.

Leading the way for Cumberlands was Yates who finished with a team-high 23 points and five rebounds. Wilkinson and Duncan added 13 points apiece, while Eddie Tornes (JR/Muskegon Heights, MI) finished with nine. Bernard Samuel (JR/Charleston, SC) dished out a team-high three assists.

The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, December 3, when they travel to Atlanta, GA to face conference foe Life. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
