University of Pikeville Releases 2016-17 Men's Basketball Schedule

The University of Pikeville and head coach Kelly Wells have released their 2016-17 men's basketball schedule.

Here's a release from UPIKE:

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- In just a little over two months, the sounds of University of Pikeville basketball will fill the East Ky. Expo Center, according to the 2016-17 schedule released by head coach Kelly Wells on Friday.

While the unofficial start date is Oct. 21 with the annual Basketball Blast-Off at UPIKE Gym, the regular-season will begin four days later on Oct. 25 with Central Penn coming to the expo.

The next few weeks will see the Bears host and take part in multiple events, including their own UPIKE Tip-Off, Appalachian Wireless and Walters Auto Classics, followed by three games in the MSC/SSAC Challenge in Pulaski, Tenn.

Opponents at that challenge on Nov. 17-19 will be a good early-season test for UPIKE as Martin Methodist (Tenn.) went 18-13 last season, Faulkner (Ala.) was 21-14 and Bethel (Tenn.) went 18-12.

The UPIKE Tip-Off Classic on Oct. 28-29 will be tough as well with Bluefield (Va.) up first, a team the Bears beat 93-82 last season, followed by Bob Jones, a team that won its first six games last year.

Shawnee State (Ohio) is the first Mid-South Conference opponent on the slate with the "battle of the Bears" scheduled for Nov. 26 in Pikeville. Two days later, defending national-runner up Georgetown comes to town for a Saturday tilt.

John Calipari Writes Another Book

UK head coach John Calipari has penned a new book titled "SUCCESS IS THE ONLY OPTION: The Art of Coaching Extreme Talent."

The book will be available in bookstores and online on November 15 with presale orders available now.

Here are details:

New York Times bestselling author John Calipari, the charismatic Naismith Hall of Fame coach who has returned Kentucky to college basketball prominence, reveals the secrets behind his unparalleled ability to transform a group of former high school superstars into a selfless, cohesive team in his new book “SUCCESS IS THE ONLY OPTION: The Art of Coaching Extreme Talent” (Harper), which will be available in bookstores across the country and online on November 15th with presale orders available now.

Calipari is highly regarded for his ability to recruit the country’s top high school talent without making outlandish promises. Instead, he believes, “Commit to each other, be about each other without sacrificing your own goals, and by doing this you can achieve all YOUR dreams and more.”

With that philosophy, Calipari led Kentucky to four Final Fours in a five-year period from 2011-2015. “One and done” players like John Wall, Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins are all currently NBA All-Stars. And Calipari continues to mold these individual superstars into a cohesive whole, playing for each other with selfless commitment and fierce intensity.

Expanding on his 2014 New York Times bestselling book “Players First: Coaching from the Inside Out”, “SUCCESS IS THE ONLY OPTION” digs deeper as Calipari for the first time distills his methods and philosophies in a way that will resonate with not just athletes and coaches but business leaders who are trying to get maximum performance out of their own top talent. Coaching a successful basketball team is much like building a successful business. For teams to succeed, even the most talented performers must sacrifice some of their own glory while still feeling that they are reaching for individual goals.

“I’m asked all the time, ‘How in the world are you pulling this off? How in the world do you get such talented kids – not just one or two, but an entire team of elite talent – to come together and play for one another?’ Well, this is that story. I wanted to tell our story of how we get the most out of elite talent, how we create a culture of brotherhood and form a team with such talented individuals. It’s not an exact science and there are all kinds of ways of doing this, but this is our story. My hope is it might resonate with other leaders in similar positions.”—John Calipari

A basketball team is an intimate workplace. The blend is everything and character matters.

For Calipari, each season is a series of discoveries as he learns how to unleash the extreme talent in each of his players and mold them into championship material as college basketball comes to a crescendo every spring. Calipari can’t control everything, yet he is responsible for everything—which is something any CEO can understand.

“SUCCESS IS THE ONLY OPTION” offers real life lessons into leadership, team building and creating a culture of achievement that are applicable far beyond the basketball court. These are the lessons for anyone seeking to inspire talented individuals to reach for their best selves and contribute to a greater good.

Ethan Faulkner Joins Coaching Staff at University of the Cumberlands

University of the Cumberlands has hired former Elliott County High School star Ethan Faulkner as an assistant coach.

Faulkner has previous coaching experience at Northern Kentucky University and Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Here is a release from UC:

The UC Men's Basketball team enters the 2016-17 season with high goals and aspirations. After a significant run in 2015-16 that saw UC finish 24-12 overall, 10-6 in Mid-South Conference play, and a game in the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals, the Patriots now look to the future. With the opening on staff, Head Coach Don Butcher would find a great fit for the program as Ethan Faulkner has been hired as an assistant coach for the Patriots.

Faulkner, a native of Sandy Hook, Kentucky, is a 2014 graduate of Northern Kentucky University in Highland Heights, Kentucky, where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Health and Physical Education. During his time at Northern Kentucky, Faulkner was a team captain for two years while playing in 117 games with 73 starts in his career. He currently stands in the top 10 in all-time career assists and 11th in all-time free throw percentage at his alma mater. Another notable collegiate achievement is the 2011-2012 All-GLVC selection he received.

Before attending NKU, Faulkner attended Elliott County High School where he scored over 2,500 career points. He was also a two-time 16th Region Player of the Year, three-time 16th Region Tournament MVP, and three-time Kentucky All-State Selection. During his time at Elliot County, his team saw three 16th Region Championships/Kentucky State Tournament appearances with a Final Four presence in 2009.

After his playing days were over, Faulkner took to the coaching ranks where he was an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky. During his time at NKU, he coached an A-Sun Freshman of the Year and two 2nd Team All-Conference players. Next, Faulkner was an assistant coach for Mount Vernon Nazarene University. While at MVNU, Faulkner coached a Crossroads League 3rd Team player and an All-Newcomer Team player.

When asked about his thoughts of joining the UC basketball program, Coach Faulkner said, "I am humbled and honored to be joining the Men's Basketball program at University of the Cumberlands. I couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to learn from a successful coach like Coach Butcher. This program is full of tradition and I look forward to playing a small part in continuing to uphold the standard of excellence that has been established here for many years."

Coach Butcher added, "We feel fortunate to have added Ethan to our staff. Ethan had an outstanding career as a Kentucky high school player and was able to be a part of some very successful Northern Kentucky University teams. After playing 4 years at NKU, he coached one season with Dave Bezold at Northern and I'm sure those experiences will be helpful to our program. Ethan will be involved in every phase of our program and his commitment to success will be obvious. He has a bright future in our profession and will be counted on to provide positive leadership and prepare our players to be successful in the game of life."

Alex Poythress Earns Partially Guaranteed Contract with Indiana Pacers

Former Kentucky forward Alex Poythress has agreed to a partially guaranteed contract with the Indiana Pacers.

Poythress, who went undrafted, is expected to spend the first season the NBA D-League with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.

Here are details from Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical:

For Poythress, 22, who went undrafted in June, this is essentially a make-good training camp deal – with an eye toward spending the year as a non-roster Pacers player on the franchise’s Fort Wayne NBA Development League affiliate.

Former NKU Assistant Dante Jackson Joins Staff at Air Force

Former Northern Kentucky University assistant Dante Jackson has been added to the coaching staff at Air Force.

Jackson worked one season on Dave Bezold's staff at NKU.

Here's a release from Air Force:

Dant√© Jackson has joined the Air Force men’s basketball coaching staff for the 2016-2017 season, according to an announcement today from head coach Dave Pilipovich. Jackson comes to the Academy from Northern Kentucky, where he was an assistant for one season. During his stint there, Jackson helped the Norse to a home winning record after only four seasons of competing as a Division I program.

Jackson, a 2011 graduate of Xavier University, started his coaching career at Ohio University as a graduate assistant under John Groce, now the head coach at Illinois. Jackson helped the program to the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Following a one-year stint with the Bobcats, he returned to Xavier and spent the two seasons as a graduate assistant under head coach Chris Mack.

On the bench at Xavier, Jackson helped the Musketeers finish third in its inaugural season in the Big East Conference and made an appearance in the semifinals of the league tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York. Xavier also earned an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

As a player at Xavier, Jackson played in 137 games, which ties as the most in program history. He is also second in school history with 107 wins and seven NCAA tournament victories. He amassed 795 points, 374 rebounds and 255 assists during his career.

Jurich Says Louisville Still Waiting on NCAA Investigation

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich says his program has to "just wait" while the NCAA investigates claims made by Katina Powell in the book "Breaking Cardinal Rules."

Here is an excerpt of Jurich's comments via

In a radio interview Wednesday with Louisville station WKRD 790-AM, Jurich said he doesn't know any more about the NCAA's investigation of Katina Powell's allegations in "Breaking Cardinal Rules: Basketball and the Escort Queen." Several investigations are ongoing, but the school last winter self-imposed sanctions including a postseason ban after its investigation determined that a violation occurred.

Jurich says whatever the NCAA decides and when, "We're going to deal with it up front like we always have. We'll take our punishment, we'll move on and we'll get better from it."
