Berea, KY- #9 Berea returned to the Roland Wierwille Court this afternoon, concluding the home portion of their schedule and celebrating the three seniors on the team during senior day. The team welcomed Midway College to the Seabury Center.
In a game which saw three ties and four lead changes in the first half, the scoring started with Corey Wise's drive to the basket to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead. The next five points went in favor of the visiting Eagles before Richard Parker, who finished the game with 32 points, hit a three-point basket to tie the game at five. Berea took the lead back off of Parker's second three-pointer of the game, 8-7. After a 6-1 run by Midway put them ahead 13-9, Anthony Myrks-Brewer hit a three-point jump shot which sparked a 9-0 scoring run for the Mountaineers, which included points from Gabe Hinton and Austin Glasgow, to pull ahead 18-13. After the Eagles pulled back within one point of the lead, Berea scored nine straight points to take a 26-17 advantage, with 8:16 remaining in the first half. The lead for the Mountaineers dwindled to just three points before a 10-1 run which consisted of back-to-back three-point baskets from Parker and Stephen Butts, a Wise jump shot and Nick McCollum layup gave Berea their largest lead of the half 38-26. An 11-4 scoring rally by Midway over the last 4:33 of the half gave the Mountaineers a 42-37 advantage as the teams headed to the locker rooms for the intermission.
Parker's fourth three-pointer opened the second half before two jumpers from the Eagles brought the visitors back within four points of the lead, 45-41. Myrks-Brewer three-point play at the 18:38 mark put Berea ahead by seven points. The visiting Eagles pulled back to within five points of the lead before a Wise three-point basket extended the Mountaineers' lead to eight, 58-50. After seeing the lead go to five again with 12:12 remaining in the game, Berea used a 7-2 scoring rally started by Wise's three-pointer to take a ten point lead, 72-62. Midway responded by scoring five straight points to again cut the lead to just five before a seven point run by the Mountaineers pushed the team ahead by 12 points, 79-67. With 4:12 remaining in the game, the Berea advantage became just four points after a 7-1 Eagles scoring run but a pair of free throws from Parker and a jump shot from Wise quickly pushed it out to eight points, 84-76. Six straight points by Midway cut the Mountaineers lead to just two points, but Hinton's tip in off a Parker missed shot gave the team a four point cushion, 86-82. A three-point jump shot from Wise with 59 seconds remaining gave Berea a seven point lead, 90-83, and the Mountaineers hit the free throws down the stretch needed to win, walking off the Roland Wierwille Court with a 96-91 victory.
Wise finished the game with a double-double by scoring 29 points and collecting 12 rebounds which included shooting 11-16 from the field. Myrks-Brewer finished an assist short of a double-double, finishing with 10 points and nine assists. Parker finished the game with five assists. The win gives the team a 12-2 record on the Roland Wierwille Court this season.
#9 Berea (16-8) waits to see their fate for the 2017 USCAA Division I Basketball National Championship Tournament on Monday at 4:00 PM through a video release. The selection show video can be seen here. The team's final regular season game is on the road as they travel to Grayson, KY to take on Kentucky Christian University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
