Kentucky 70
UNLV 60
NIT First Round
The Kentucky Wildcats (21-13) appeared ready to run away with the game, but then UNLV heated up from the outside and managed to cut Kentucky's twenty-point lead down to only three in the second half. Down three, with the ball, a UNLV perimeter player was inadvertently tripped by Kentucky freshman Darius Miller. The UNLV player fell to the floor and lost the ball out of bounds. The officials failed to call the foul and Kentucky closed the game out with a basket that triggered a late run.
Kentucky was led by Jodie Meeks with 19 points. Patrick Patterson contributed a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Perry Stevenson added 10 for the Wildcats.
UNLV (21-11) picked up 14 points from guard Wink Adams. Joe Darger scored 11 points, include three from long range. The Rebels were 10-33 from the three-point line for the game and only 11-21 from inside the arc.
The Wildcats shot 50% from the field and had 20 assists on their 26 made field goals. Kentucky advances to face the winner of tomorrow night's game between Creighton and Bowling Green. If Creighton wins, the Cats will travel to Creighton. If Bowling Green pulls the upset, the game will be in Lexington.
My Thoughts: The Cats showed signs of inspired basketball that we haven't seen in a long while for a period of time in the second half. Shortly after that, they gave the momentum to UNLV and allowed the Rebels to nearly get the comeback win. UNLV started nailing long range shots and Kentucky failed to make any defensive adjustments. I am happy to see the Cats get a win tonight, but this is still not a very good team. I look for them to have a tough time on the road at Creighton (assuming there's no upset). On a side note, the atmosphere was electric in Memorial Coliseum tonight. It was loud and had a very nice feel throughout the game.

Kentucky's ball handling is suspect. It's great having Meeks and Patterson in your team but if no one else can handle the ball, you're gonna struggle when pressed. Just like last night.
Fire Gillispie!
There are a lot of Fire Gillispie comments being passed around the Bluegrass State these days. I personally feel that we should have a little better record with Meeks and Patterson. We should be able to plug anyone else in the rotation and have more success than we did this season. I agree with you on ball handling. You could have Jordan on your team, but it wouldn't matter if you give the ball away through unforced turnovers.
