KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Preview: Holmes vs. Elliott Co.

Game 14: Holmes (34-2) vs. Elliott County (32-2) 11:30 a.m.

What can we say about this one? If you have two teams playing against each other that boast a combined 66-4 record, you are probably in for a treat. This game conjures up memories of Richie Farmer and Clay County against Allan Houston and Ballard. Holmes has eased its way into the semifinals with impressive wins over Christian County and Lexington Catholic. Elliott County has been equally impressive in their victories over Anderson County and Shelby Valley.

The Bulldogs will have an advantage in this game with length and athleticism. They will be looking to present matchup problems with junior stars Elijah Pittman, Ricardo Johnson and Jeremiah Johnson. Senior Jamel Riley also figures to be a prominent part of Holmes' plans.

Elliott County is trying to become the first 16th Region team to make the finals since Ashland in 1996. The Lions have had a magical run of three 16th Region championships and this is their best team to date. They will be led by seniors Jonathan Ferguson, Ethan Faulkner and Evan Faulkner. The key to today's game may be sophomore big man Timmy Knipp's ability to contain the Bulldogs down low.

My Thoughts: Many people are calling this game a David vs. Goliath situation. I would caution that this is far from a heavy favorite taking on an underdog. Elliott County is 32-2 for a reason and they have a very good chance of winning the game today. Holmes will need to limit Elliott County's 3-point shooters from getting open looks. The key for the Lions will be to keep the athletic Bulldogs away from the rim. I think the winner will come down to Elliott's offense or Holmes' defense.

Prediction: The Lions are my team and I won't be changing at this stage of the game. I have said all season they can win a state championship and I'll stick with that prediction. I am a little concerned about Elliott's legs with their lack of depth, but I'll take Elliott by 3 points.
