He was not recruiting high-major level basketball players:
The accounting on the Billy Gillispie era at Kentucky is starting to be completed, and simply from a basketball standpoint things probably were worse than imagined.
Friday, shooting guard Konner Tucker announced he was leaving Wake Forest after earning only a few minutes of playing time in the season's first month. What does this have to do with UK? Gillispie had secured a commitment from Tucker before being dismissed.
Forward Dakotah Euton, from whom Gillispie secured an early commitment when Euton was a ninth grader, signed in November at Akron. That's a strong mid-major program, but it's not like Carolina came surging in to steal Euton once Gillispie was out of the way.
Not only was UK not winning enough, it wasn't recruiting the talent to be successful in the future.

BGHopster, tell everyone once again, how many recruits did UK sign in the early period, ONE! And tell everyone once again, how many recruits turned down scholarship offers from UK in the early period? SEVEN. What's the point of recruiting MAJOR talent to Kentucky if they're not signing LOI's? How is that any better than BG's recruiting classes? And now there's John Wall doing Cal and Robic's job for them in recruiting CJ Leslie. Pitiful. Hell, even Tennessee has the fourth rated recruiting class, where's Kentucky?
They just signed a top 2 class in the history of college basketball. Give them a break...
Billy G. just called and said we got whipped!...Billy G. was the worst recruiter in Basketball....he wanted players that he could tongue lash...I hated him from the time he was introduced as UK's basketball coach..most praised him..but I said he was the wrong guy from the start. Thank God his time has passed!
Bluegrasshoopster, answer this question, if Cal had not gone to Kentucky, where would your No.2 recruiting class be right now? It would be with the Memphis Tigers, and you know it!
From a recent New York Times article. "For Pastner, his shot came unexpectedly. He was an assistant to John Calipari last season, before Calipari left for Kentucky, TAKING HIS PRIZE RECRUITING CLASS WITH HIM..."
