Murray State (6-1, 1-0 OVC) fought off the strong outside shooting of Eastern Kentucky to earn a 62-60 homecourt victory on the first night of conference play. MSU dominated the game on the inside, but the Colonels led most of the way after going 10-23 from the 3-point line. Murray State’s B.J. Jenkins hit the game-winning jumper with 2.4 seconds left in regulation.
The Racers placed three players in double figures, led by Tony Easley with 14 points. Isacc Miles added 13 and Jeffery McClain scored 12 off the bench.
Papa Oppong led Eastern Kentucky (5-2, 0-1 OVC) with 18 points, including 4-5 from long range. Josh Taylor contributed 15 points, but was only 6-17 from the field and 2-9 from beyond the arc.
The Racers were able to overcome EKU's 3-point shooting with rebounding and defense. Murray State won the rebounding battle 36-23 and forced the Colonels into 20 turnovers.
Both teams return to OVC action on Saturday as Murray State will host Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky travels to UT-Martin.
