Northern Kentucky Hangs Tough But Falls Short at Nebraska

Nebraska 80
Northern Kentucky 61

Final from Lincoln, Nebraska

Game recap by NKU:

LINCOLN, Neb. – Two players reached double-figures in the scoring column and Northern Kentucky won the battle of the boards, but No. 21 Nebraska proved to be too much for the Norse in an 80-61 loss at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Tayler Persons led the offensive output for the Norse, scoring 13 points on four field goals and five free throws. Four second-half trifectas from Anthony Monaco gave the junior guard 12 points for the game and NKU's second player in double-digits.

After Nebraska (1-0) scored the opening basket of the game, Tyler White knocked down a pair of jumpers to push Northern Kentucky (0-2) in front. Dean Danos and Jalen Billups followed with two more buckets, and NKU found itself with an early 8-2 advantage.

The Cornhuskers then used a 16-4 spurt to regain the lead. Cole Murray's first of two triples in the game brought NKU back within three, 18-15.

Eight players reached the scoring column by halftime, led by Murray and Deontae Cole with six points each. Jake Giesler added four points and five boards to the cause, but NKU found itself with a 15-point deficit (45-30) at the break.

In similar fashion to the first half, the Huskers found the bottom of the net first to extend their lead to 17. The Norse reeled off eight of the next 10 points to pull within 11 (49-38).

Nebraska pushed the lead back out to 16 before Persons was fouled on a lay-up and converted the three-point play. Trailing by 13 (54-41), the Norse had looks on three-straight trips, but were unable to convert before the Huskers went on an 11-3 run to push the deficit to 21at 65-44 with just over ten minutes remaining.
