Superior State Hands Kentucky Wesleyan Second Straight Loss

Superior State 69
Kentucky Wesleyan 65

Final from Marie, Michigan

Game recap by KWC:

Kentucky Wesleyan was limited to 37 percent shooting in the second half, including 1-of-9 from 3-point range, and was was defeated by host Lake Superior State 69-65 in a men's basketball game before a small gathering Saturday at Cooper Gym in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

Coach Happy Osborne's Panthers (2-2) have dropped consecutive games since opening the season with a pair of victories in the GLIAC-G-MAC Challenge in Tiffin, Ohio.

Despite their cold shooting, the Panthers, spurred by Devin Langford, took a 60-55 lead with just over eight minutes to play, but the Lakers — winners by 14 points over KWC last season in Owensboro — methodically chipped away.

Alex Williams broke a 65-all deadlock with a free throw at 3:46 to give Lake Superior State (2-1) the lead for good. Kentucky Wesleyan failed to score in the final 6:24, and the Panthers' last field goal was Marcus Fillyaw's 3-pointer at 7:04.

Kentucky Wesleyan was paced by veteran guard Ken-Jah Bosley, who scored 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting, including 0-of-6 from beyond the arc. Bosley sank all six of his free throw attempts, however, and dished a team-best four assists.

Langford climbed off the bench to add 11 points and five steals for KWC, which also got 10 points from Tre Boutilier. Basil Deveaux paced the Panthers in rebounds with five. For the game, the Panthers shot 40 percent from the field, but made onlyl 2-of-15 shots from 3-point land (13 percent). KWC was 17-of-23 from the foul stripe (74 percent) and secured 30 rebounds.

Lake Superior State's balanced scoring attack was paced by Alex Williams, who scored 14 points. Jordan Dasuqi and Mike Smutny each added 12. The Lakers also got four assists from Tony Harris and a team-high five rebounds from Smutny.

Kentucky Wesleyan begins a three-game homestand at the Sportscenter on Tuesday when it plays host to Lane (7:30 p.m.) — a tuneup for the Panthers' Holiday Tournament on Thanksgiving weekend. KWC will play Grand Valley State at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, and will face either North Alabama or Truman State at either 1 p.m. or 3:15 p.m. on Saturday.
