Union College Destroys Boyce in Season-Opening Win

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - T.J. Jones (JR/Spartanburg, S.C.) and Deante Johnson (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) each recorded double-doubles, as the No. 16 Union College men's basketball team opened their 2014-15 season with an emphatic 107-43 victory over Boyce (Ky.) on Tuesday evening at Robsion Arena.

Early on, the Bulldogs struggled with Boyce, falling behind 13-6 in the first seven minutes. After Boyce went up 17-12 with 13:05 left in the period, Union began the run that put the game away.

For the next eight minutes, Union went on an astounding 24-0 run to put the game out of Boyce's reach, as the Bulldogs went up 36-17 with five minutes left in the period. Union kept pouring it on as the half came to a close, taking a 53-24 lead at intermission.

The roll for Union continued into the second half, as the Bulldog got up by 40 points with 14 minutes left (69-29), then 51 points with 10 minutes to go (85-34). With four minutes left, Union went over the century mark, as the Bulldogs coasted to a 64-point home victory to open the season.

Overall, Johnson, Jones and DeAntray Stevens (JR/Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way in the scoring column on the evening.

Jones, playing in his first game in a Union uniform, scored 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while snatching 11 rebounds (eight of which were offensive 'boards). Johnson scored 15 points (on 6-of-7 shooting) and also pulled down 11 rebounds. Stevens, meanwhile, came off the bench , scoring 17 points, while dishing out six assists.

Elsewhere, Gerrard Newby (SO/Lexington, Ky. ) added 11 points off the bench, while Fitzgerald White (SR/Miami, Fla. ) and Tyler Wagner (SR/Corbin, Ky. ) scored nine points, apiece,
